The Essential Edge: Official Knife Thread (3 Viewers)

Pulling out a knife is cool for a kid. Just showing it off. That can result in trouble.
.

Hell, back 16 years ago, I was attending classes in a local tech school, where they were also running a local Police Academy. One of the cadets (an adult sheriffs deputy) would hang out in the halls with his classmates between classes, and he would constantly flick open his large tactical folding knife.. I observed many scared looks from bystanders, over the weeks of me attending class there. He was oblivious of how this was intimidating and could get him into hot water. And he was an adult...

Ya, a Swiss Army knife is MacGuyver approved?

Is $134 a good price ?
Actually paid more than that. Was like 188 CAD for the g10 version But no I don't think it's a great price. It's Xmas though. I think browsing eBay for a while might find u a better price. That's what I gathered from some recommendations here

I carry this bad boy around with me very, very occasionally.

A Swiss Army knife, packing a mighty 5.6cm blade. In the UK, our wussy laws stipulate that we're only allowed to carry around a blade of 7.62cm or less (without good cause). Guess I should man/blade up and take advantage of those extra 2cm.

It hasn't saved my life or anyone else's but I did once use it to whittle some wood.

The knife does come with a story, however.

It was given to me by Christopher Foss, who was once described by a general in the SANDF as "The Michael Jackson of tanks".

That was before MJ's troubles but Chris told me the tale after news broke, which was kinda cool. Anyhoo, the general was v excited to meet him.

I used to work with Chris. He's a consultant for MoD, DoD and others across the world. Man that dude loves armor. And how!

Mailman is expected to deliver a new knife tomorrow. What could it be...?

Is it bad that chip money is going to buy other things? Well, now that I paid for my custom set, is my chipping fever temporarily quenched?

On a side note, I posted this knife photo on a recently joined Spyderco fan page, and had tons of responses telling its fake, lol... ya, I only paid $26 for a $200knife, but still not fake. Confirmed by some of the more experienced members on that page. Ha.

And my new Medford Protaereon EDC knife is super cool, and I’m carrying it everywhere... this is my first HIGH end custom knife from a famous knife maker, and right now the size doesn’t bother me... but I wonder if I will eventually go back to carrying the knife above for practicality purposes...?

My shaving kit

top is a browning drop point
Puma Prince 910 i bought this in 1987. a gem of a knife!
SOG "Assisted Open" drop point
and a Lansky sharpening system - get one of these. There is a little trick to learn to make them work well but once you have it you can see the results.

I've used my Lanskey for pocket knives and swords, but would not use it for important finer tips - like kitchen knives or my straight edge razor.

New Spyderco Shaman. Like a native, but bigger... stonewashed blade and clip. G-10 scales (with rounded edges). This thing is sweet.

What’s the best Swiss Army knife to buy? I’d prolly want one that has scissors and a blade, not much else that I’d need. I don’t own any Swiss Army knives, and think it would be cool to add one to the collection

Victorinox - hands down. High quality, and I believe they have a remarkable warranty.

Which style is up to you. Here's a few items I find get the most use on mine.
  • At least 2 blades: I use one for everyday utility work and the other one stays clean and sharp for those times utility sharp isn't sharp enough.
  • Bottle opener: I don't need it often, but when it has been in play it is a lifesaver - or at least saves a lot of steps
  • Scissors: Hard to keep them sharp, but they work for those field tasks like trimming a loose thread. If I'm home, I'll walk past these to get to real scissors though.
  • Screwdriver: Mostly useless, but it has been put to use a few times.
By and large, the rest of the tools on mine are unnecessary.

Fits like a glove on my AR15.

For what -- hot dog roasts?

I spent 26 months in 'Nam, and never even laid eyes on an M7 bayonet. They were nothing but a liability in the jungle or for close quarters combat because of the length they added to M14s and M16s.
