No, James Dean is not charging for water. He does request gratuities though. He just hasn’t removed the pricing.

See? He just wants people to cover the food. Nothing more, nothing less. He can get a little controversial. He suffers for his cuisine.

Stay tuned for some pics from this weekends action. Session #117 NLHE tomorrow night and #118 HORSE event on Saturday.

Really bad about pics but The Executive Game at The Godfather Club continues.

A few personnel changes in the regular ring, checking out every other weekend occasionally to escort summer on its way and recharge for the Fall/Winter sessions.

A set of Tina’s, a crossover cash/STT set, 43mm’s Binions on the Web mold coming in from the 8/2024 group buy.

Two table builds planned for Fall before table building gets more arduous with the cold weather and in time for table selling season. Talk of recovering our main table and ongoing talk of converting it to a racetrack lives on. Also talk of an octagon for sight lines and a beta test. Aside from all the standing to rake pots, I’d take a shot at a 10 man round or a decagon.

The James Dean Lounge lives on and I’ll say food at the game has been the single most sustainable investment in our club. I was weird about food because of the potential mess etc but it has been great. If you don’t spread food as a host consider it. Food breaks and ordering or pot luck isn’t the same. Spread food and encourage tips. They’ll cover the food. Keep it simple and it’ll stay doable. On that note we’re expanding a bit.

A not so recent update on the proposal to shift the stakes at TGC. The message blast players received. Always having fun with this thing we call hosting.

Breaking News
Just in from The Godfather Club:

Some time ago, Executive Game leadership and Godfather Club management began discussing changes involving the Friday night game including the retirement of the Rock Straddle, altering of the blind structure, and written guidance on pre-session buy-ins and add-ons. After much deliberation, a final proposal had reached club ownership and was scheduled for signature into policy.

A great deal of deliberation had reportedly taken place. Additionally, degrees of input and feedback had been received and taken into consideration from a small but vocal group of players in emphatic support of the retirement of the Rock Straddle and an increase in the blind structure to .25/.50.

The opinion coming out of the bilateral and unified Godfather Club and Executive Game Special Committee, tasked with weighing in on the matter, recommended swift ratification of language in support of these changes.

During a late night emergency meeting between the owner and founder of The Godfather Club and his first Lieutenant at an undisclosed location, the decision to ratify this language was discussed.

Only hours after this rendezvous and still under cover of darkness, another meeting reportedly took place in the club itself. The only confirmed or verified member being Godfather Club owner.

During a brunch briefing with the only other stakeholder in Club operations at his side, the games leader announced the scrapping of the plan to move forward with the changes that had relatively swiftly moved through committee and received the full endorsement of a small but invested group of the games regulars.

In confident fashion the games owner, manager, and spokesperson took the podium in the East Parlor and delivered a brief announcement.

“Ladies and gentleman, thank you for being here this morning. Everyone here knows what has been discussed and considered for the Executive Game. I’ve put much thought into this and I’ve decided against the somewhat well-received changes, that I proposed mind you, to the Executive Game played on Friday nights here at the Godfather Club. I’ve grown this chapter of my hosting career meticulously and methodically. No change has been made without intensive thought and consideration. I’ve gone to these lengths to protect the game itself and no players in particular, but all players and most importantly the game I’ve worked so hard to build and deliver. So at this time the changes that have been sent to my office for signature will not be put into place. More information to follow. Thank you for your time. I’ve slept very little and need some coffee. Thank you.”

The games manager left the East Parlor with his backer and disappeared into another area of the home.

Unnamed insiders cite managements decision to back off on proposed changes being tied to fundamental roots including an “open door policy for players to leave the game if it’s not big enough” and that games historically at the now retired Frogtown Card Club and at The Godfather Club boast “never having lost a player because the game had gotten too big.”

Those close to the spokesperson report a long night of contemplation and that the decision involved damage control for not implementing the much anticipated changes being “a hell of a lot more enjoyable than having to unravel an ill-conceived plan that wasn’t consistent to my over 20 years of managing a game.”

Anticipating disappointment and possible push back from players, the games leadership is said to be “sympathetic to their thoughts on the matter but the decision has been made” and that he expects players “loyalty to leadership and discretion in making their feelings known” to be driving forces to any potential shifts in how the game is tabled and operates week to week.

In an early week reference to an upcoming decision the manager hinted to his ongoing mixed feelings.

“If anyone, anyone questions my commitment to this game they need to take the blinders off. The amount of time, blood - yes blood, and sweat, not to mention the incalculable resources of many sorts that I’ve poured into this game is staggering. I welcome my partners in this thing we call poker into the room week in and week out. Players, on both sides of any decision that comes from the top, need to take that into consideration before they spend time asking about the forces that drive how the game is managed.”

Hinting toward how questions about the decision will be handled the manager simply stated; “Like all inquires historically in-session time is for poker. All discussion related to how the game is managed and how and why decisions are made on a more global level will require a sit down. I’m always happy to hear what the players are thinking.”

When asked about any untoward effects the decision might have on players he added “I can’t control who ultimately accepts a seat at my game. What I can control is making the game accessible to as many players as possible. No players, no game. Get it? And of course who actually gets invited. I’ve intentionally and unintentionally driven players out of my games and I don’t expect that to ever change.”

As of Sunday, July 21st at 2100 the official statement from The Godfather Club on the matter is as follows:

“As of Session 119 set for Friday, July 26th and moving forward, the Executive Game will operate as a .25/.25 ring game with no straddle as the Rock is on a hiatus of an undetermined length. Minimum buy-ins pre-session will remain at $25 and maximum pre-session buy-ins at $40. Players can freshen their stacks in any amount that does not put them in a position of being the largest stack. While these changes will disappoint some, they will not affect the vast majority of the player pool who had not been apprised that any structure decisions were being considered. The game is insistent that all inquires on these, and any other matters, be held directly with the game manager and outside of sessions. The decision exemplifies the philosophy leadership holds that changes of all types need to be considered only after intensive thought and input but ultimately lie within the jurisdiction of ownership.”

There is no other information available at this time.

Ken Merwin is the owner/operator/founder of The Godfather Club, Eagan, host and manager of The Executive Game, and founder of The Frogtown Card Club, St. Paul (retired). He has hosted and managed nearly 500 home games in the lifespan of game play at the two venues.

Picked this table up for $80. Plan on pulling it apart and raising the rail to install LED, sanding the track to finish a much lighter tone, reclothing the infield, installing brass or stainless cupholders, and adding a banker drawer. Whether or not I mount it on a pedestal remains to be seen. They did a great job on the rail upholstery.

I’ll either sell it when table building season ends and table selling season is upon us or put it into service while I recloth or convert my table to a race track. I prefer them to wall to wall cloth. My heritage.

The only caveat to this table is the four drink holders on the long runs. And then I got thinking; players sit between the drink holders or else where would you stack chips. The racetrack is narrow enough where you can leave your cards on the infield (capped) and yet wide enough for all those chips. Drink holders in the playing surface on a wall to wall cloth table is a nightmare on so many levels.

I’ll do better pics before I start the tear down and along the way as I put it back together with the upgrades. Also, I’m going to buy a few sheets of MDF and create templates for the pieces so when I build the three tables I plan on building in October the process will be so much more efficient.

Enjoy.

Threading The Godfather Club - MN. The biggest little game in town.

Started hosting a combination of cash games and tournaments back in the Frogtown neighborhood of St. Paul about 25 years ago and ran a weekly for many years. Stepped back from hosting when the bar poker scene took off and made a lot of friends and poker connections. Left the bar scene when the bubble sort of burst and settled into a couple of home games. My main game was a ton of fun, maybe 25+ each week tourney/league style. Plenty of action, some good folks, but also many undesirables and broke players.

Took a little break from that game and decided to reboot my own game. Held about four weeks of Saturday night two table tournaments. Added the Friday Frolic, a .10/.10 cash game to “warm up” the poker room and it became apparent that the cash game was more popular and easier to manage than tournaments.

The game went straight cash on Fridays and Saturdays right away. Since its inception in 9/2022 I’ve spread 97 sessions and we’ve been once a week only since May of 2023.

The game ran as .10/.20 with a $20 buyin and add ons, went to the .20/.20 game and is now a .25/.25 game. We play a floating straddle which only in effect if the owner of the straddle chip is UTG or its owner chooses to play it. It’s in effect about 25% of the hands we play. Maybe less. We abandoned traditional cash game add on guidance and basically say if you have the cash add on between any hand, an amount that the table doesn’t overwhelmingly object to. More money right?

I have an invite pool of around 40 players and fill my 10 person table more than 90% of the time.

My chip collection is growing and I ditched my Claysmith Monte Carlos (boat anchors) for my house set of China Clay 8v Greek Key Molds. We have 6 sets that rotate in with our favorites being my HHR’s, a set of 43mm royals, a mixed set of Paulsons, a vintage set of All-ins and I’m always looking to add more. Some Tiki Kings are on my mind at the moment. I’m like custom labels so blanks and relabels are in the house. @TheOffalo is my art guy and I use Sticker Mule for my labels. Their quality labels, inexpensive, and have a 5 day turnaround.

We’ve got a good group; younger (20’s, 30’s, 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s) and a good mix of those learning the game and experienced players. I spend a great deal of time nurturing my invite pool. If you’re not growing your game you’re waiting for it to start to die.

We went from a “water is in the fridge” game to “water and soda are in the fridge, Dunkin’ Donuts over there, the bags of chips and snacks, the candy bowl, and now the hot dog roller. Occasionally, I plan on a crock of pulled pork or chicken. Booze and beer are the players responsibility. All this and the only thing I ask is whether you eat a lot or a little is that you tip. I’m not paying for the food. My job is to have a great game with great players in a great room. I do my job and I spread food. Players need to do their job and come and have fun and enjoy tip the game. Easy Peasy, Chicken Greasy.

Lots more updates and more regularly moving forward.

Hosts unite and stay the course. It always comes.

Now, some pics.

Outstanding, man! Your pool is 40 and you usually pull 10? I'd have thought that would be higher.

+1 on the hotdog roller. Bon appetite!

Godfather Club will be updating this thread with some newer pics as some things have changed over time.

I guess I noticed how bare the walls are in my he older pics.

The current game has spanned two years and 124 sessions.

It’s time.

Great night for Session 124 in the Executive Game at Godfather Club.

I promised a couple of pics and while I’m on like three hours of sleep decided to make good.

The room has morphed over the last two years and 124 sessions. Enjoy.

Great night of poker at Godfather Club. Stayed more than lukewarm as I was in for $40 and out for $250. I wasn’t the only one to play ahead. Good times had by all.

Like all good hosts, I’m at it early reaching out to my crew and outreaching to some prospects. Always be recruiting. When is the best time to add to your Rolodex? Now.

Enjoy your day PCF and we’ll “see you at the club.”

I have a pizzaz too. Bought it from K-mart, so yeah, I have had it a while :).

We survived our 9 hour two-table Game 100 offering of The Executive Game at TGC.

The Donkey Suite was outfitted with a ton of food, the bank was packed, and we seated 18.

Only a few pics because I always forget. The Godfather played ahead whole point ($100 in our world). I think they took pity on me or something.

This gracious group also, without any prodding (ok, I reminded them a couple of times) covered all the entrees in the Suite. Water, pop, candy, chips, and Dunkin’ Donuts are never part of those mathematics.

Two tables is a lot for my room sound wise and a lot for me people wise. It’ll be back to my one table operation for the foreseeable future.

Jump on back to the Concurrent Builds thread for big news in the world of table building here at TGC.
