The Official Unofficial Mixed Set Showcase Thread of PCF! (8 Viewers)

Question from a newbie… when you’re building a mixed set, what things do you like to make sure are consistent (materials, size, manufacturer, design) and what things do you like to flex on?
Answers to this may vary widely as it is personal preference so I can only speak from my point of view and experience.
  • Color coordination between chips and edge spots within the set. Some get repeating colors, some avoid it. I just make sure they compliment each other well when they are stacked next to each other
  • Molds I like to keep very similar and from the same company. THC stays with THC generally, but mixing in some RHC or house molds can be done if selected right (mainly for the sake of the frac as those are much more limited). I enjoy hot stamped fracs with inlaid THC chips.
  • If you get really into the details, some things may make it very difficult and possibly expensive to find a good match but the end product may be very worthwhile. Things like shaped inlays, leaded chips, certain locations, red denominations on the chips, etc can make for a very aesthetically pleasing set but your options to match can be pretty limited and difficult to find.
  • Spot progression to some extent. Having a the same edge spots on all chips is great, having spots that get a bit more complex as the denomination goes up is great to a degree. I would mix solid higher denoms with spotted lower denoms. Sometimes the spots on the 5 are a bit busier than the 25 and depending on the chips I'm ok with it too. No spots on the fracs and 1 chip is ok too and then get spots on the 5s and above, or go all solid.
At the end of the day it's about what you enjoy when you see and get the chips in play. Your own tastes may evolve over time so what looked great a couple months ago may not be as pleasing now or later on and you can change them out. That is part of the beauty of a mixed set as you sample and change out chips.

This past weekend I put a new mixed set into play. Already have plans for a different 1 chip and custom relabeled fracs for later, but that's a long term goal.

I think the three most important ones are Ms - Material, Manufacturer, and Mold.

Material - this one is barely worth mentioning because mixed sets are almost always clay. I did build a ceramic mixed set once and I think I’ve seen one or two others on PCF. I know I’ve seen at least one mixed plastics set. But whatever the material, they all have to be the same. That might be the only rule that you’ll never see broken.

Manufacturer - again, kind of an easy rule because 99% of the mixed sets you see here will be Paulson anyway. But there are other clay manufacturers and it’s extremely rare to see somebody mix manufacturers within a set.

Mold - when I started on PCF, just about all mixed sets were THC molds. But as THCs have gotten really expensive, we’ve seen a lot of people building RHC mixed sets. But it’s pretty are to see different molds mixed in one set - it’s just unsightly. Most people want some threads pulling a set together and mold is a pretty easy one. The most common exception to this is a mixed Paulson house mold set - you will see a few of those.

Those are the major consistencies which are common. Some people like to have a common location, like all Vegas chips or even all Strip. All shaped inlays is a nice (but expensive) touch. Another really nice touch which can be difficult to accomplish but gives a polished look is having all the denominations the same color. Most chips’ denominations are printed in either black or red and if you can get all the chips in your set with the same, it really pulls them together.

All that said, there really are no rules. The most important thing to me is to have a fun poker game and for that, the chips really don’t matter. Getting the perfect mixed set is really more about showing it off in pictures on PCF than anything else. And I’ll let you in on a little secret: when people sell their mixed sets, 9 times out of 10 they’re split up. Even the most perfect looking set is rarely successfully sold as a whole. So the entire thing is kind of a big fat fiction.

I've myself mixed 2 manufacturer's.

But this is because they are my fav' cash chips and could not have a full playable set of one or the other.

In the end, I went with The Post fracs, Silver Star dollars, The Post fives and Silver Star $25 (so alterning The Post and Silver Star for each denom).

Luckily, this makes what I think a cohesive cash set in terms of colors and spots.

So to go back to your question, I think the answer is "it depends".

Very cool to see the thought put into it. I’m assuming that’s why you want to replace the 1’s too? Because of the spot progression?

I sort of want to replace the 1s for the long term cohesion but the LCO 1s are stunning to me so I'm ok mixing them in sometimes :) For the LCO set, the 5s are some of the hardest chips to get so my putting The Pub 5s as a stand in almost allows me to enjoy an LCO set without the high costs.

Once my gear labels arrive, the set will look more like this and the fracs will be solid light pink quarters.

I love The Pubs! I used to have a barrel or two in a heads up set. They’re a very low key awesome $5.

I thought I might add a group shot of my mixed Empress & PCA set here since I finally got a few photos in decent light

Starting a Washington State mixed set. Looking for a suitable replacement from WA for 25¢ chips instead of these Jumers.
I totally recognize some of those chips… I play my Jumers hot stamps with the rest of my Freddie’s. I have three other barrels of Paulsons to round out the rack. Looking for a barrel of THC $20’s (just missed those Presidents).

I love my THC mixed set.

Leaded RHC Cash Set. Trying to make them all textured inlays/stickers to the best I can!

Waiting for PCA frac textured stickers (for maroon solids) and PCA hex-faux-inlay textured stickers $25s for the purple spitfires but we're almost done :)

Made some changes to this set — Went with a classic green $25. Sneak peak to this mean mixed green leaded giant.

Does your OCD kick in when you’re trying to stack the $1s while playing? Or do you enjoy the novelty of it? Cool idea to mix them up.
All guests have positive things to say, they feel handling chips from multiple casinos is cool, which it is, of course.

The cool factor overrides my OCD plus 100+ similar condition, house mold, white $1’s is OCD enough for me! Only mild OCD, I suppose.

I’ll get them out on the table for a proper photo shoot soon but my mixed RHC set is finally complete!

Shoutout to @Jeevansluck @lewan @flipupchipup for helping me put this together. It’s impossible to find anything that’s not dice chips downunder and many sellers are against shipping overseas so its much appreciated to those that do. This is more than enough bank for my 50c/50c game but I’m already thinking about swapping out the green $25s for an arc yellow or blurple $20…
