Here’s where I’m at - not quite done, but fully playable mixed Vegas house mold set.
There’s really only 73 $20s back there; I have a few extra $5s boosting up the stack. The fracs are only about half union plaza house mold, with a bunch of plaza THCs and starbursts filling out that rack. But this is more than perfect for my .25/.50 8-max game, though I guess if I wanted to be ready for $1/2, I could always add on more $5s. But overall I’m loving this. All leaded, all house mold, and splashing around the big $5s is all fun!

Ha, yes. I got most of those from @MaxB and he was using them as quarters. And there are still a few of those @Gear over labels lingering around. They look so good I don’t even notice them.

I had 1980's blue Bally and Hilton Flamingo $1 chips, so I had to do something with those awesome Excalibur's .... quarters made the best sense with the 1/4 pie spots

With the help of the PCF degenerate community, I’ve been able to assemble a revised grail (at least for me) work of art - a Paulson 600-chip cash mixed house mold set (all tucked comfortably into a Nanuk 910 case):

How did everyone go about collecting their mixed sets? I would love to start a set but the helpless romantic in myself wants to try to harvest the whole set myself, or at least the $1 and $5 chips.

Mostly with money and persistance. Depending on the chip, money isn't always enough to shake them loose.

Edit: Also requires some patience.

The nice thing about a mixed set is it's easy to start and easy to add to.
Be patient and be on the lookout for chips that you like and you can get for a fair price.
If you have one denom locked up, go to the next.
Keep doing that and you'll soon have a playable set.
You can always replace a denom if you find a chip that fits your set better later on.

I recommend you start with your workhorse chip which you need the most of (at the very least two racks). Try to get those two or three racks all at once and then add the other denoms.

I started mine with a rack of Aztar $25s then found the empress Joliet $5s, added the $1s, replaced the $1s with the LCOs that fit the set better and then got the hundos and the fracs.

Acquired over a very long time with much help from others here. The most I found at one time was 39, the rest were gathered mostly one or two chips at a time from the convention or eBay and the other board.

This is absolutely gorgeous, I hope to one day have a set as beautiful as this one! I appreciate your advice, and can't wait to get started on my set. I think I want to try to harvest my set of $1s to give the set an even more personal touch.
