Things That Are Bullsh*t (12 Viewers)

As it is a Logitech, You can probably use "Logi Options +" and reassign a key/keys you never use. I did that when my new keyboard had a different layout that the old one.
Thanks. I actually tried that... and yes you can reassign virtually all of the keys to a different, preset function that is selected from a menu.

Unfortunately, 'Print Screen' is not one of the options in the list. This keyboard is going back for a real one.

I remember back when pressing a key caused a letter or number to miraculously appear on a piece of paper.

But Print Screen?? Like a window screen or screen door? WTF do you print on it? Can you use cursive instead?
The 'print screen' key takes a screengrab of your desktop. 'ATL'+'print screen' screenshots the active window.

The Snip app in Windows has gotten a lot better over the last few years. I still use Snagit most of the time though. It has many nice markup and editing tools.
Thanks for the suggestions. I will take a look at something like this. But I'm still returning this PoS for a keyboard with all the proper keys on it :)

While the keyboards in the mail, have you tried WindowsKey + Shift + S? That's what I usually use for screen grabs, just drag the whole screen if you'd like.

Teach it at home. :cool There are a lot of things not taught in schools anymore (like history) that we teach at home now.
Not to mention a whole lot of things taught in schools that shouldn't be. Anyone relying on their local school districts to teach their kids everything they need to know are going to regret it one day...

My kids didn't learn cursive in school. Their signatures look like they held the pen in their mouth. It's atrocious.
Same for my kids, except they actually spent like a week or two on cursive at some point in elementary school.

Yes, my kids had the same experience. So they "learned" it for a week. They certainly didn't learn it for keeps. Cards from grandma had to be read by us parents.

If one believes that schools are not teaching kids properly, they should home school them. There are things that should be taught that are not, and some things that are taught that could be left out, without getting political. YMMV of course, but I have a slight bias, being married to a teacher.

I have my kids in a private school, where they do learn cursive. I don't know if cursive matters or not. My reasons for private school are complicated and I am fortunate to have the means to make a choice. A lot of people don't. Homeschooling is really hard to do well, becaus teaching is hard.

I have close friends who teach in Howard County for almost 20 years and recently put their kids in private school which was telling to me. Kinda crazy actually.

My wife has been teaching in public schools for 22 years. My kid is in private school. Best money I spend. If we lived in one of 3 towns adjoining our city, we’d consider public schools. But no chance in my city.

Not every set of parents has the option to home school, or to pick an appropriate private school. BTW, my wife is also a retired teacher, so my views also have an inside perspective. My wife is a great teacher, but no one good teacher can overcome their administration or school board. My complaints are not with the majority of good teachers, who I have nothing but ultimate respect for.

I would restate your first sentence to read "if one believes that schools are not teaching kids properly, they should get involved in trying to make changes!" Don't like the decisions your school board is making? Run for a board position yourself, or support new board candidates that more accurately reflect your views. Don't just give up and pull your kids out, leaving the rest of your community to continue to get a bad education.

Also, be involved enough in your kids education so you can recognize when they are being taught things that you believe to be inappropriate or inaccurate, then re-teach them yourselves. Teach your kids to stand up for their beliefs, and to think for themselves and to question and do self research. Not to just automatically accept that everything a teacher or administrator tells them is the absolute truth.

I can relate to a particular system or even school being challeged. The thing with Howard County Maryland is that it's one of the wealthiest counties in the United States and has historically had one of the highest rated public school systems. I attended those schools in the 1990’s. Because of its school system, its property values are significantly higher per SF compared to other countries it abuts. And yet, families where both parents are teachers in that school system, and make public teacher money, are opting for private school. That's the part that gets my attention. Its not about status. There is a difference here between private school like parish schools @$10k and PRIVATE schools at $40k where the CEOs and diplomats send their kids.

But $10k/year per kid is a big sacrifice for a school teacher who already paid extra for their house due to the school system.

Yup. My family is subsidizing public schools without using the resource ourselves. The city should love us and want more of us.

I could have a nicer house/vehicle. I’d rather invest in my kid.

The school day is not 100 hours long. There is only so much even the best school can teach a classroom, keeping in mind that somehow, every single class has a @Josh Kifer in it, distracting all around him.

Teachers and schools have to balance out what they need. Computer-literate or cursive. I certainly only learned one, but IRL need the other. It's up to the parents to fill the gaps, and pretend that they are responsible for their kids, not the public school system that is only doing the best it can.

Can confirm.

Can confirm.
I just spent 3 days doing fire safety education for 10 different classes of first graders. Every class had a funny-man distracting the class. Instead of asking their name, I just called them "Josh". When they said "My names not Josh", I just told then "yes it is, you just don't know it yet."

Either way, the kid was so baffled that he dropped silent and I could continue.

Fire safety week is bullshit.

My kids had to take world history, American history, and American government - they're required by the state of Florida to graduate. Washington doesn't have the same thing?

I don't know if I'm allowed to say this in this thread, but since WA is a blue state, what passes for "History and Am Gov't" may be quite different from what is taught in a red state like Florida. We're pretty lucky in TX that what is taught in most school districts outside of the major urban areas hasn't gotten too politicized yet. We still have a good cross section of people sitting on the school boards, unlike the inner city districts that are completely dominated by Dems, who often want to rewrite and censor the history of our country. And good luck finding a good old Civics class anywhere anymore.

I'll just ask you and all of your book-banning red state school boards to take it to the political forum. Don't muck up the bullsh*t thread with bullsh*t.

Really? C'mon man, you're going to say something that ridiculous, then say take it somewhere else. I know you are better than that.

The only books I know of that conservatives don't want in schools is pornography. I would hope no one, blue or red would be in favor of that.

Haha he did start it and shouldn’t have but since you replied I’m interested in what book banning offends you? I’m against censorship.

Lol

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and state lawmaker Rep. Matt Krause campaigned in 2021 to investigate a list of around 850 books that "might make students feel discomfort, guilt, anguish, or any other form of psychological distress because of their race or sex," in a letter first reported by Texas Tribune.
Makes sense…race and sex. Some of those are written more like opinion pieces and not educational. No place for sex in schools these days but I think race should be discussed by all sides even if I disagree on a specific matter.

I disagree with censorship as well. Im now married to an amazing woman who grew up in the south and the lack of sex ed is really scary though, so I disagree that sex has no place.

I dont think it does make sense to exclude the issues of race and sex. Books should make us uncomfortable, I remember reading Night in middle school, horrific depictions of violence; I wouldnt mind a gay character.

Fuck, this is why I have that section closed, Im sorry!
I didn’t say they should censor a gay character, I think sex talk is for parenting. Yep I’ll stop commenting.
