When you forgot how many chips you brought out so either you lost a barrel or all tigers are back in their pens and theres no missing ones. Will know when I go home and see what I have.

I find it unlikely that someone would harvest a full barrel but well see.
And I thought the guy that swiped 5 chips from me had balls!

If one person shows, the game should still play. Heads-up poker is better than no poker.
Surely this discussion has taken place on PCF before?
I can't agree with you completely on that one - I think there are plenty of variables. Some players would flat out disagree. Some players might not hate heads up poker, but would rather do something else. Personally, I'd drive an hour each way for a good game without a second thought. For a heads-up or 3-handed game? Probably not.
Anyway, it raises questions for me as a host. As a host I feel a responsibility to my players to let them know, we just got cascading cancellations, we're gonna be four-handed, I know you committed to playing 8-handed, and I wouldn't hold it against you if you cancelled.

This was the situation - a bunch of people dropped out in the last two days leaving the host with a very short table for tonight. He let those who were still signed up know the situation and there wasn’t enough interest to play 4 or 5 handed so he cancelled the game.

Bummer, but that’s life sometimes. I hung out with my girls at home instead - not exactly time poorly spent!

Unless it's himself who cancelled.
I hosted a game once where I was flying in and arriving home just 1 hour before the start. I had set up the tables before I left, and left a house key outside.

If my flight was cancelled or delayed, I would have been late or even missed it entirely - but the game would still have played.

I get it. We typically run a MTT. Snow (which is apocalyptic in the south) has cut us down to one, not quite full table, but We tell everyone that if they show we will play. Short-handed is s a good way to introduce circus games, as there is less variability.

It might not be fun for everyone, and that's fine. I have 2 players that drive 4 hours (each way). I cannot imagine how lousy it would be if I cancelled 1 hour before because the game was down to 4 players.

I don't disagree that format changes should be broadcast. A text saying "we are expecting just 4 players tonight, but some form of poker will be played" might get you (or others opposed to short-handed poker) to cancel, but as long as one other person shows, I want the game to go on.

...and yes, this topic has come up multiple times. I stand behind my desire to keep the games running whenever possible - but poker isn't about the gambol for me. It's a chance to hang out with friends and just be a kid again for a few hours. Your guests expect the same.

When you offer someone a very fair price at or below market, for an item costing hundreds of dollars, and they try to get you to lower it another $5-10.
I hate that shit. Haggle me over $10 shipping for a rack that costs $300 or more? Fuck out of here.

If I'm selling, my ads always include the price of standard shipping in a flat rate box via USPS. I'll package it well and use lots of tape. If you want insurance or shipping via another courier, that's on you. I always recommend insurance for anyone buying thousands worth in a transaction. I always insist on it when buying and pay what it costs.

The fake need created out of thin air for middle men, i.e. realtors. I mean it applies to most tax services, car dealerships, sales people in general, etc. (im not talking about you if you happen to fall in these buckets  :ROFLMAO:)

But the necessary evil that is realtors to sell a home in the US. Blech.

Lol to think my CPA designation is lumped together with a realtor license...
We desperately need, and I very much look forward to, having financial professional help with taxes and such.

The bullshit aspect is the created *need* for your standard Joe to pay a service to submit their taxes, not the tax service professionals themselves.

If someone has nothing more than a W2 and basic submission, they shouldn’t have to pay to get it accomplished.

Direct file, freetaxusa, etc. are regularly under fire and (I think) it’s deemed likely we continue to see these disappear, be eaten up by intuit, etc. Tax professionals are great, but the unnecessary need created by lobbyists and the US gov’t isn’t.

I know as adults we have to be our own advocates and educate ourselves, but ffs it’s 2025, we shouldn’t have to be tax/realtor/etc. experts just to try and figure out who to hire. Down with unnecessary opaqueness!

I'm somewhat confused by all this. If the "average Joe" with nothing but a W-2 is paying someone to prepare their tax returns, then either a) they're an idiot, or b) they're paying an exorbitant amount to get their refund a few weeks early. So they're still an idiot.

There are plenty (last time a checked) of sites where medium to low income taxpayers can submit their returns for free. I've always assumed these were mandated by our government. Every once in a while they actually do get something right... I prefer to purchase the software myself. Usually about $30 and I get e-filing for my return and a couple of family members. You should probably have a basic understanding of how taxes work, so maybe that's giving more benefit of the doubt than most common folk deserve. But for the most part, I think it's a needed service for some, and one that can be avoided by many.

I'm all for the realtor rant. They make WAAAY too much for the service they provide. I'm really surprised there aren't more that try to get into the game by cutting the amount of the commission in an effort to increase volume.
