Time for a cocktail! (3 Viewers)

4 Roses makes a Single Barrel that isn’t labeled “Barrel Strength” and can usually be had here in Indiana for < $45/btl.

yup just saw these 2.

Best bourbon for cocktails?

I have some decent stuff but think it might be too nice for cocktails.

That said... I don't want a $20 bottle of paint thinner. So don't mind spending $40-$50 on something.
Also, I don't make them that often so paying a little extra $$ is justified.

Old Grandad BiB is my pick! $23 bucks here. Rittenhouse Rye BiB would be my pick for a solid $25 rye. Either Old Forester 100 proof (bourbon/rye) would be good picks as well.

I guess a disclaimer that if it's an Old Fashioned or a more spirit forward cocktail like a Manhattan/Boulevardier I might pick something slightly finer like the 4 roses, buffalo trace, elijah craig...or even go with the top shelf stuff. I have no problem making spirit forward cocktails (especially OFs) with the finer stuff, as the flavors will still come through somewhat.

That said, I've made plenty an OF with Old Grandad that has been delish!

Elija Craig...sub $30...mic drop.

LOL. I Was going got post a formal complaint about people not posting the recipe for their cocktails.

If I’m using a non-barrel strength, I’ll do 3oz Bourbon and 2oz Disaronno.

Either way, make sure you start with a big enough glass, or cut it in half.

Not exactly what you asked, but I like Rittenhouse for a solid, inexpensive cocktail rye.

I usually use Wild Turkey 101 or Elijah Craig when I need bourbon.

My first attempt at clear ice today. I forgot about it and it froze solid, so I had to get rid of the bottom with some hot water.

Still, 2/3 of what I made was usable if not perfect - pictured here in a Montenegro Manhattan.

Kentucky SideCar

2oz fresh tangerine juce ( used clementines)
1/2oz fresh lemon
1-1/2oz bourbon
1/2oz simple syrup
Dash of orange bitters

edit: delicious. But needed one more ounce of bourbon. :)

Top of my queue. I’d make it tonight, but am enjoying a Paloma suggested in the Tequila thread.

The SideCar recipe was a tad sweet. I'd ease up on the simple syrup.

Ok. So I don’t think I had all the ‘correct’ ingredients. But wow. This is amazing

Drank a 1/4 of it and put back in the shaker with fresh ice and added another ounce of bourbon.

EXTRA delicious.

hmmm im seeing a pattern. :wtf:
You twisted my arm. I'm having one now with 2x EC and Cointreau since I don't have any Curaçao. It's damned tasty - citrus, not too sweet, and a nice mellow bourbon base.

I found that making sure you shake well and don't abort the shake early makes a difference

I'll have to try one of those Kentucky CRs. CR no2 is one of my favorites of all time.
