I am firmly in the "full sets should be put in play" camp. No idea why you would want or need a full set to sit in a box on the shelf and never be touched. Sample sets are for that - or maybe you could get a barrel of each at most if you want to have a few more. Why have 300 of one chip when 1 of them looks just as pretty sitting there never moving or being used?

Now, to those people who have 20+ full sets and say that they use them all, I really hope they do even if it's like once a year per set.

Talking about cars that are worth 10-15M, just look how some are treated at the Goodwood festival.

I prefer to see a guy pushing a Ferrari 250 GTO to its limit like this rather than keeping it in a garage.

I have the same opinion on most "utility" things like you said. The best way to honor them is to use them for what they have been created.

You know,, in the past I’ve grumbled about people who stash away chips in a vault and never play with them. But if it weren’t for people like that, we’d NEVER be able to buy dead mint Old school chips.

I'm a big believer in chips hitting the felt. I've owned my share of decent to high end sets. Everyone of them hit the felt. However, they are your chips. Encase them in fucking jello for all I care. Whatever you do with them. Post lots of pron please. Since my budget will never allow me to own most of the sets that you bought. I'll have to live through

@Windwalker you seem to have a people pleasing personality which isn't going to serve you well in this case. The are some people that will just hate the fact that you could quickly acquire the pinnacle of chipping when they know they probably will never afford those sets. It is just good ol' fashioned jealousy, that is the root of all of it. They may doll it up with other reasons and say you are not following "chipping protocol" but that is all window dressing.

Just do what you want and let those that don't like it fuck off.

You may choose whatever you want to do with your chip collection. You can sit in on a shelf or cabinet and display it proudly. You can lock it in a vault and hide them in the corner of your basement or attic. You can put them on the felt as often as you like. You can bring them over to your friends' places to play. They are yours.

Having said that, it would be a shame not to play with poker chips. That is, after all, the reason they were made in the first place.

This is how I feel. Has anyone ever seen a somewhat worn down set of boat chips, BTP, SB, etc? I've seen some worn down Jack's, but that was ONE time.

Do as you wish with your chips.

My boat chips will be used and will show signs of wear, so will the rest of my chips. I’m glad to be part of a hobby that entails using the items you’re collecting. This heart will cease to beat one day and I’ll be damned if I haven’t seen my beautiful collection on the felt before it does. They are to be shuffled, splashed, used as a conversational piece, and overall enjoyed. That’s exactly what I’ll do with them.

Some of my sets sit on the shelf (jacks) to hold for my kids to use in the future. they are always calling dibs on the ES cash and SB cash sets. Not gonna happen.

Dude, you paid the money, the chips are yours so do with them as you please. If you want to collect them do, if you want to play them then do. If you feel like the value will drop if you play them (it will, no one will pay mint prices for used chips) and it bothers you then just enjoy looking at them.

For as much as people talk about putting chips in play, there sure are a lot of mint chips in the classifieds. Many of the chips you’ve purchased have been around for a few years and still mint.

Stop worrying about what people on here think, do the hobby the way you want to.

I see that the heart of the OP is maybe not being addressed in most posts. I missed it the first time too.

The point about chip collecting being apparently different than other collecting.

As a person who doesn’t collect things, I can’t attest to the actual differences, but as someone recently pointed out - there are a lot of people who collect casino singles and think we are the crazy ones for having a “playable” amount and in fact playing them. I think from a chip grading perspective (if it were more prevalent) - the value would be affected by the play, even though most people on this forum will pay similar money for near mint, felted once and dead mint chips. So from a PCF value, probably not much value lost in actually playing them, but I see where you’re coming from.

Again, I’m here to make “usable/functional” sets, and to enjoy them as they were intended. I like to host with good whiskey, good chairs and a good table, and chips are no exception. The reason I buy chips is to use them. (Aside from a few samples that I have displayed).
