To Play or Not to Play, That is the Question. (3 Viewers)

I say use them if you want or don't if you don't want to. I get that collecting sometimes means that you cant play with the toys, I would read my comics over and over and now they are not worth much to someone else but I still love them. The cool thing about poker chips is that they are made for casino use which means thousands of people using them 24/7 for years at a time. It is unlikely that using THC casino chips in a regular home game will reduce their value at all or damage them in any way. Not saying it can't happen, just not likely, even RHC chips that are more susceptible to flea bites will most likely not be damaged or lose value through normal home use. I used Horseshoe Cleveland tourney set twice a month for a year and they looked as good as the day I got them, sold them for exactly what I paid. I would do what makes you happy and not worry about it.

You know,, in the past I’ve grumbled about people who stash away chips in a vault and never play with them. But if it weren’t for people like that, we’d NEVER be able to buy dead mint Old school chips.
Look what came in the mail today:
(Yeah, I’m fine with vaults)

I didn't insult you or your opinion. You took it to that point so yeah man, you're the dickhead. You could easily disagree with a point without telling to shove something where the sun doesn't shine or basically calling me stupid by asking if I can read. It's funny that you specifically felt the need to reply to my OP because it hit you some kind of way. If the shoe fits I guess.
When you say "select members", aren't we all supposed to read your post as though you are talking directly about us an individual?

I just assumed every post where someone says a member, members, select members, those guys, the assholes, etc. is talking specifically about me. Don't be an asshat next time bruh.

Apparently an old item, just like old people, needs some rest and respect.
You don't drive a 1963 Porsche 911 on the track; at least not for a time-attack.
But not tracking or even driving at all a brand-new 911 so that it becomes a "classic" by 2077 is mental illness -IMHO, of course.

It's a ligate concern from a strictly collection standpoint, you open a comic or take an action figure out of the box and your fucked on the value, poker chips are just an entirely different animal altogether. Dead mint is great but there is a giant area between dead mint and damaged that has no real effect on resale value. Case and point, play two dozen home games with the coke giraffes and try to sell them, people will line up and pay whatever your asking because they are cool to own regardless of if they were used in some home games. Now if you start chewing on them, that's a different story. As long as you don't have poker friends that are animals your fine.

If you decide to put them in play expect to enjoy the experience. Also be prepared for the fact your poker buddies won’t give a crap and may treat the chips in disconcerting ways.

I’m grateful to be in a location where several members have awesome sets they graciously put in play, which allows folks like me to to play with amazing sets and post sweet stack pictures.

If you’re on the fence try it with one set and decide afterwards if the fun/joy of using them exceeds whatever value reduction occurs as a result. Kinda like with a new car, the first flea bite is the hardest.

What is going on here? Why would people express opinions about what other people do with their chips? I personally would never spend $1000 for a set of poker chips. But that's just me. Many people here do, and I enjoy watching it. It doesn't bother me one bit if people here are dropping 5 grand on a set. Good for you! Do what you want with them too! If you bought them to play them...great. I'm sure your friends enjoy playing with premium chips. I know I would. If you want to put them in a mohaghany and glass case with LED lights and a laser security system, go for it!

Why would anyone think to pass judgement on what anyone else chooses to do with their chips???!!!! That's just bullshit.

Having said that I do have sets that I will not use with certain groups, my work crew gets more than a little crazy, Sun Fly hybrids only for that group.

What if you use Jack cut cards to chop them into rails?

I haven't read every post in this thread because well I'm lazy and I get easily distracted but from what I can tell most people are saying to do what you please with your chips. I think the real discussion was on the differences in collecting poker chips than collection other things. The OP was concerned about using the chips and damaging the value like if you read a 1st edition book or take Darth Vader out of the package. Most are saying that poker chips are different and using them in normal home games will not change the resale value.

^^^^^^ THIS ^^^^^^

I was just talking about a lesson learned about collecting poker chips. The discussion reveals that for the most part, people believe: “Nobody cares, do what you want, they’re your chips.”

Sample sets and singles are for collecting

Sets are for playing
Imagine how titling it would be to play a set made up of just sample sets

To lighten up the mood here.

For some reason this thread reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where Mr Peterman buys a slice of preserved wedding cake from a royal wedding thinking he was going to make alot of money from it and Elaine just ends up eating it.
Yes!

Watching “the contest” right now  :ROFLMAO:

Right but it's a valid concern and worth discussing IMHO, especially because its so different from collecting other stuff. Absolutely helpful to new people getting into the poker chip set collecting game. So, good thread!

Funnily, we have two other posts that ended in the same place! https://www.pokerchipforum.com/thre...bout-chip-flipping-prices.60922/#post-1194554

Just a big group of people spending extreme amounts of time and money who don't actually care how the subject matter is purchased/sold, treated, used, etc. Huh, doesn't add up on paper, but it's the line that almost all of us are going to publicly take/say (including me!).

Thanks. When I said "What is going on here", I wasn't asking literally. What I was saying is that people should never put the OP in a position where he thought he needed to defend his position, or warn others about not playing chips. Yes, chips are not like other collectibles, you can play with them some and not diminish the value, but if someone wants to frame a "grail" set and put it on the wall, that's his or her damn business!
