Upcoming molds......... (13 Viewers)

Nope, no updates yet. I will definitely post here when I get my shipping notification.
But it is mounted, else we wouldn't have that shipping notice of Quicksilver's order from about 5 weeks ago.

I get that it’s mounted but I’m surprised that other pcf members haven’t posted about received FDL molds. I know not everyone who has an order in are pcf members but I would have expected more at this point. Excited to see them start rolling in.

It looks like my province will be on house arrest for some time yet.... I'm ok to wait a few more months (even though i'd love to have my chips now).

I'd just like a nice set for reopening.....or a banging set for the underground if all else fails lol.

I would guess that David telling someone who is inquiring to place an order that "the B mold and H mold are the next two up" probably means that those are the next molds they can still place an order for, not that those are the next molds to be mounted. I think the crowns are probably in next, but it's too late to be able to place an order for them.

I probably squeezed the last Scrown order in back in the middle of January. David gave me a little time to finalize my artwork, but he needed to know the totals at that time.

I'm not in a huge rush for the chips as I probably won't get to put them in play until later this summer, but that might give an idea of where Scrowns (and maybe LCrowns) fall in terms of things needing to get in to David to keep the production queue moving.

They've had some additional delays and setbacks since then. I was able to place an lcrown order on Feb 25th.

FYI, I was scrown order #17 of 17 back on Dec 31st. Not sure how many more have been added since then (I believe at least 2 or 3 more have been posted in this thread since), so this is likely to be a fairly long run I'm guessing. Probably somewhere around 30 total orders between the l & s crowns. And my scrown order is for 3600+ chips. I think he said there were a couple other large orders as well. I think these will be mounted for about 3 months or so.

My L-crown order is for 2145 chips. So a fairly large order I guess. I put it in at the end of November, so no idea where I am in the queue (I would guess the 2nd half as at the time David said they were going to be cutting off orders soon for the crown molds).

I feel like ive lost track now on whats in. I thought that it was 44 and FDL but now its FDL and E&C or are one of these out now?

Correct per my emails with David roughly two weeks ago the FDL was in and running and was expected to run another 6 weeks. I am surprised that I haven't seen more pictures or sets popping up here. It'll be one year for me on April 6th so I would think I should be somewhere towards the front of the line although my chips were solid day glows so maybe they save those for last?

Not that it matters to me at this point but doesn't color/edgespot combination have anything to do with which orders go first?

As far as I understand as of a month ago, FDL's went in right after the 44mm's finished a month ago. Seems that there's at least a month more of FDL's to come out. E+C is going to be a very small run of probably one more week or so if shipping notices for those are coming out. They replaced the MD-50 mild, of which those last chips shipped two weeks ago per @Hornet 's set arrival.

Last I was told was that the large and small crowns will go in after the FDL's and E+C finish up. E+C will be done sooner than the FDL run, but I'm not sure what will go in first between large and small crown.

After that, B-mold is going in, likely after large crown is done. If large crown goes in first (likely first week of April) and B-mold is installed a month later, B-molds will likely start arriving mid to late May. Small crown is going to be a really long run, 3+ months from what I can gather. H mold it seems is going to follow the B-mold run. Likely going to be July before H mold goes in, is my best guess, which is right when small crown will likely finish. No idea what's going in after that, though. HHR or CSQ maybe?

I have a custom order in on B mold and more Key Wests coming in from Dennis with the next H mold run, so it hopefully will be a good summer for me :)

I doubt it. I've been told that I would be receiving my chips last because I was the last order more than once. But when I placed my order on the first E&C run, I was told I would be last because I had the largest order, despite being either the first or one of the first orders in on that run. So order size and timeline appear to be the most relevant with respect to where you're at in the queue.

There are a lot of good guesses in this thread but also some inaccuracies :)
While generally order size and timeline are the main factors, there are a few other things that can affect the order in which chips are ultimately shipped.

Inlays - there is only one inlay punch - each time the shape or size has to be changed the punch has to be stripped down and set up again. Like many processes this is time consuming so therefore you do this when you have a 'batch' to do on a particular size or shape. This won't affect most people but for those that place their order early but don't supply artwork until the last minute obviously this can have an impact. It's the main reason we print inlays pretty much as soon as proofs are approved.

Clay - as most know it doesn't have an infinite shelf life and there is a maximum you can make at any one time anyway (purely due to weight). It generally takes a day to roll one color and it's not always possible to roll every day. So, if at a particular time your next batch of orders happens to include all 38 colors it can take 10 weeks to cycle through everything once. So obviously that also has an impact.

Edge spots - It takes some skill to punch and assemble the smaller and complex spot patterns, whereas anyone can put together a 312 for example. So a larger order with small and/or complex spots could literally take 4 months to put together compared to a week for something small and simple.

Rejects - again as most know, we have to start by making more pieces than the finished order calls for. That has to be estimated based on experience. Not all of the extras are taken right through to the finishing stage unless needed. So lets say 2 orders are finished, ground and inspected at the same time. One has sufficient good chips to be shipped so out it goes straight away. The other order is short. The extras are finished (which could take as long as another week) and it's still short by just a few. Those have to be made from scratch so add another week. Then a couple of days until it can be fed into the pressing between other things and all of a sudden it's 3 weeks later going out than the other order that was inspected on the same day. During that 3 weeks a few other orders that were placed later could well have been shipped out.

Spot color changes (for example) - when it's not too late we accommodate these but obviously if we were just about to make your parts when this happens, and we don't have the clay on the shelf for the new color then you are going to be affected by the 'Clay' section above. Many people forget that although they placed an order '9 months ago', it took them 4 months to send the art and then they changed the colors twice. I'm not thinking of any specific orders here but it probably happens as much as 1 in every 4 orders.

Molds - right now the FDL and DIECARD are in. Diecard is rarely mentioned as it's not often ordered but there were a couple of very old orders that had to be done.
FDL should be done in a couple of weeks and that will be followed by the Crowns (has to be Small followed by Large as the outstanding orders on the small go back much further. Yes the crowns will be a long run, 30 odd orders for 40,000 chips is an absolute minimum of 3 months, probably more like 4 by the time the large are complete.
DIECARD will be a few weeks later changing to NO MOLD for a single medium size order (no choice, it's been waiting too long) followed by BDIAMOND.

As that all takes us out a fair few months nothing else is fixed yet.

Thanks for taking the time to explain David!!

You didn't even mention the people placing orders one week after the official deadline  :whistling::ninja:
At least I can call myself innocent on the other counts :)
Well you remember I had to see the order details first before committing. That was to make sure that none of what I stated earlier would be an issue within the timescale to when I predicted the mold would have to be finished with.

These little glimpses behind the curtain are so much fun to read, it's really a fascinating niche business.

Thank you as always for the insight and the little nuggets of information and for keeping us in the loop on what's being made and when. My guesses were close!

I need to sleep on a couple of things, but I got good news on the job front today and will be putting in my MD-50 order in the coming days :)

@David Spragg

Thanks for the detailed explanation, and also the update on the molds. I find the explanations of the chip manufacturing process fascinating (nearly as much so as the actual chips).

Ok it's official... My FDL order landed today! I was totally surprised. I showed up at the post office to check my po box and had a pick up ticket. To my surprise it was from CPC! Haven't even had time to go through them all, but so far I'm quite impressed!
