What are you listening to? (7 Viewers)

A small portion of tonight's rabbit hole:

rush e by a real person on piano

led to rush e on a guitar

led to rush e on one guitar

led to the same guy playing sweet child o mine

and along the way, I almost got sidetracked here (holy moly what a crazy guitar):

:)

this post put me in a gov't mule mood. this is one of my favorites (there is also a killer version of cortez on the same album):

Always surprises me when people who I think know music don't know much about who Warren Haynes is. Or think that Greg Allman wrote Soulshine. Warren is one of the true giants of southern blues/rock.

I discovered Mule right after Life Before Insanity came out, so I've always been partial to that album, but totally love everything Warren has ever touched.

A couple of other favorites from That time period are Thorazine Shuffle and their cover of War Pigs.

that is exactly when i was introduced to them! i listened to the shit out of that purple album. i don't see it on youtube at all, but don't step on the grass, sam is another gem. yes soulshine is a masterpiece, and was one of a few "must play" songs for our DJ at my wedding reception (i chose the live version from an evening with the allman bros. album)

i've seen warren in concert many times, but my favorites were 1) gov't mule at the orpheum in boston in 2003. chris robinson (another favorite of mine) opened, and came out to sing almost cut my hair (one of my favorite songs of all time) with mule. the combination was concert bliss. and 2) in 2002 we drove 19 hours to see the dead reunite at alpine valley in troy, wi. but the highlight of the weekend was warren haynes solo on the b stage - absolutely blew me away. i can't find any videos from that particular show, but his acoustic solo stuff is amazing listening.

*edit* youtube didn't like me linking his solo acoustic version of soulshine here, but it's easy enough to find.

I'm jealous. I've only seen him twice, once with Gov't Mule and once solo. And I have not seen Chris or the Black Crowes yet, unfortunately. Hopefully I will still get the chance since it sounds like he and his brother are getting along again now.

The one time I saw Warren with Gov't Mule was probably my most impactful concert that I've ever attended. It was October 2, 2017. You may recall what happened that day. Hard to believe it's been almost six years. So the band was several songs into the show when a guy walked on stage and handed Warren a note. He walked around and spoke the the guys in the band. Then they broke into this song. Not my recording, but thankfully someone in the audience caught it and uploaded it to YouTube.

He didn't say anything to the crowd, but I assume most understood that Tom had just passed. It had been in the news all day that he was in bad shape, and I think they even announced earlier that he had died, but then retracted it and said he hadn't yet. I mentioned to my wife on the way to the show that the band would probably do a tribute song, so I was somewhat prepared for this. But it was still very emotional with not many dry eyes in the crowd.

I have tickets to see The Dark Side of the Mule in early August. Should be great!

Warren Haynes is a great player that doesn’t get enough accolades. Seen him with his band Gov Mule and with various incarnations of The Dead and The Allman Bros. The guy can improvise (solo) which makes him sound so good in these Jam Bands. Good vocals too…
