Saw this band live tonight, they were the first band I ever saw in a night club, 30 years ago. Haven't seen them since.
My review of tonight's show:
It's like Bon Jovi and The Outfield had a baby that didn't know how to write songs.
My sister's review:
They ranged musically from vanilla to vanillin.
I was proud of both snarky reviews.
In their defense, they've written 2 good songs. Their best song is embedded below.

I guess one good thing about the recent Hamilton faux controversy is that I finally decided to give the tracks a listen and I have to say they are pretty amazing. I'm almost two years late to the party, but I was surprised at how completely immersed I got just listening to the cast album. Not sure I'm ready to drop $800 on a ticket, but when they get down to $200ish I might go see it live.
This is the first song in the production and it does a great job of making you want to hear the rest of the story.

Jenny Lewis has literally never released anything I haven't at least liked quite a bit. And her solo discography is pretty much perfect front to back. Sure, so far it's only three albums, but they are all so different from one another and all are great.
Maybe the only common theme is the completely recognizable California production values, though each has the feel of a different era of California production. Rabbit Fur Coat is early 60s, Acid Tongue is late 60s, and The Voyager is early to mid 70s.
Tonight I'm jamming mostly Rabbit Fur Coat, but if you haven't listened to her at all, may as well take them in order.

If I'm being honest, my reputation in Florida has never been the greatest. As Bill Hicks said, the beach is full of people with tan skin and white teeth and I'm sitting here with white skin and tan teeth.

Absolutely spectacular song by an absolutely spectacular band. By far their two best albums - and two of the best pop folk albums of all time - are Hollywood Town Hall and Tomorrow the Green Grass. I've given both as gifts long after it became fashionable to give physical media as gifts and they are always received well.
One of the other projects of a couple of the Jayhawks guys (along with, among others, Jeff Tweedy, then just out of Uncle Tupelo having started an unknown little band called Wilco) was Golden Smog. That lineup had a looser playing style to showcase a more ragged version of Gary Louris's songs. This is a good one:

Krafty what do you think of the new Metallica? It has to be their best record by far since the black album imo. I was glad to hear them sound so good after so long.
I actually bought the CD to listen to in the car. 2 discs, and I've loved every song so far.
I can stream Pandora at work now, so I leave mine on the 5finger channel all day.
Criminally, pretty sure I've not listened to Hollywood Town Hall. I shall rectify this forthwith!
What better-known American groups would you classify as "pop folk"?
Off the top of my head: Wilco's first album, A.M. (and then again - maybe even more so - on Sky Blue Sky); The Shins first two albums; Sufjan Stevens' first five albums. Probably some more regonizable stuff I'm blanking on.
... and a couple of weeks later, have concluded that Daryl Hall is one hell of a versatile talent. GREAT voice, excellent on guitar and keyboards. The only downside is that -- especially wearing shades -- he looks a hell of a lot like @fish72s -- long lost brothers, Greg?

Been hearing this song everywhere and dig it quite a bit. Most notably in the Spider Man trailer recently, but also in a few other things...
Apparently I'm waaaay late on these guys. I like their trippy videos and haven't really found a song I dislike yet. Been enjoying this one quite a bit also...

I think I kind of burnt out on these guys back when time to pretend got big, but they were on Song Exploder this past year (podcast where musicians explain the creative process involved with specific songs) and it was pretty good.
