What do people play....hold'em? (1 Viewer)

What is PLO?

What is NLHE?

Sorry for all the questions. I am new to all this and looking to get a card/poker night going with a bunch of buddies.

Hold'em is the universal game, and I enjoy it. But my favorite game by far is 7 stud, because most people are unable to concentrate and maintain the mental focus necessary to win at it.

For pure fun, though, it's hard to beat Anaconda hi/lo roll-your-own with three passes. I'll bet @abby99 doesn't have a card for that one... :cool

PLO - Pot Limit Omaha
NLHE - No Limit, Texas Hold'em. NLHE is often typed NL, as the "Holdem" is generally assumed through context.

You’re definitely in the right place. We love answering questions!

You’lol find loads of great info here on how to run a home game—chip breakdowns, cards, tables, rules, blinds, games, hot dog rollers, how to stay within your budget (ok, that last one was a joke ;) ).

I still love me some holdem, but couldn't imagine only playing it. We play a mix of nlhe, PLO, crazy pinapple, stud hi and 2-7 triple draw in cash game. I'm working on slipping some split pot games into that rotation, but it's not so easy with my players. Tourney we always do nlhe (so far).

Edit: the last 2 games we did get in a few rounds of SOHE and the players really liked it.

NLHE for the larger group. Started working on limit games for a smaller group, last time played ROS (Razz, Omaha and stud)
Next game we are exploring all the Pineapple variants from @abby99 cards.

How much $ do you all play for? 20 buy in???
That one is scattered all over the board. Some members run $10 events, and others have thousands of dollars on the table in cash games. It all comes down to what you and your friends have in expendable income - and that may very well change over time.

One of my cash sets has $500 chips. I've never used the $5 chips yet.

NLHE, PLO high-only and a personal invention of mine which was very well received by the crew, Tight Pineapple (discard the 3d hole card upon seeing the flop, after which the 2 remaining hole cards must both be used). The idea behind it has been to provide a little variety, yet without Omaha or Super Holdem, or even Crazy/Lazy Pineapple volatility levels.
I 'm thinking about introducing 6-card stud (ie 4 betting rounds), possibly with a single community card dealt together with the 6th (face-down) card (so still 4 betting rounds). Not sure about the betting structure to adopt for that, though.

My group is primarily NLHE with an occasional Crazy Pineapple hand. I know of another, lower stakes group (basically the friends that consider ours too high stakes and also tend to lose) that plays goofy dealer's choice games with wildcards, etc.

I personally only like to bet on stuff when I feel I have an upper hand or am at least even, so that's part of the reason I personally prefer NLHE on our relatively loose table. If I played other variants enough to get better at their strategy I'd be ok with playing those also.

EDIT: huh, after looking at @abby99's resource, turns out we've been playing Crazy Pineapple. The more you know ミ☆

Mostly NLHE. As the night moves on, we generally get into Omaha, and stud.. stud is usually after everyone’s been drinking a fair amount!

7 Stud is also my favorite game. I remember before the poker boom, Vegas casinos were spreading numerous 7 Stud game and had maybe 1 Hold Em table.

Totally agree with you on the 7 stud Larry. My grandmother introduced me to poker through 7 stud. My personal favorite is 7stud 8.

I remember those days. It was the same in Atlantic City before “Flop Lottery” hit the scene.
