I mean I think nearly everyone's actual first set was that $40 one from a toy store or somewhere like Target or Walmart.
I have not bought a real set yet, what was your first "real" set?

You might think that is a simple question. However, chipping can be a journey where you keep finding new destinations.

During the poker boom there were dozens of vendors selling cheap chip set that you could customize. They were slugged plastic chips, but they were "real" to me, and better than those interlocking chips or boring dice chips.

Then I added on to those with full custom ceramics. Those were more real, but I also learned that a "Frankenstein" set made of multiple types of chips, is undesirable.

So then I ordered a customized set of China clay chips. The set was going to be epic, but while I was waiting for the group buy to complete, I had placed an order for custom CPC chips. The CPC's arrived first, so I guess those were actually my first set of real chips.

...until I got Paulsons. Because those are real chips.

A few years ago I thought my first "real set" was the Slowplay slugged chips from Amazon. I didn't know much about chips at the time, thought they looked cool, didn't get any with denoms because I thought they'd be more versatile.

Now I have China Clay Royals for our cash games, and while not a high end set or anything, first time it's felt like we're using realish chips. My eyes are on grabbing some web mold Tina chips for a tourney set. I'll probably never be in the market for the Paulson/CPC types, just a tad rich for my blood.
