Why are poker chips so addicting? (1 Viewer)

2) If I go more than 3-4 days without a nice USPS flat rate box showing up in my mailbox, I get grumpy...

Well, at least you shouldn't be grumpy today :)

Speaking of addiction... I noticed two things happening to me as of late... Keep in mind that I'm only 3 months into this...

1) If I go 10 minutes without checking the classifieds, I feel like I may have missed out on the next big thing... My phone doesn't leave my side now... Not because of a possible family emergency, but because I may miss a classified post...

2) If I go more than 3-4 days without a nice USPS flat rate box showing up in my mailbox, I get grumpy...

I need help...

Actually, you don't need any help at all. You're doing just fine. :D

For me it's the colors and spots, and how something you think will never be possible, is possible.

Great question. This sht is definitely addicting. I don't have an answer. I had a perfectly good set of 500 X 14g chips, until I found PCF...... Now I'm dreaming about chips at night, WTF?

Maybe half the problem is this forum hahahahah.

I don't have a solid answer other than high quality/minty chips make me MOIST. :ROFLMAO::x

But you're absolutely right in the fact that this forum has a lot to do with the addiction. The hobby wouldn't be the same without a great active forum like this honestly.

Like most people, its a combination of things for me. At first it was all sound and feel, but after finding this site, i've learned to appreciate the artistic aspect. Seeing all the incredible custom sets people are cranking out has inspired me to come up with my own. I've just started thinking of a theme and it's a long way off in the future, as i've ordered some Rounders chips from CPC, but I never would have even considered my own chips until finding this site. The biggest catalyst lately has been @ChaosRock 2 latest sets...Fite club and Bubbas. Reading his post and the history behind those sets has got me thinking that poker chips can be so much more than poker chips. They can be a constant reminder of a period of time in our lives that brings us joy. Its too easy to forget as we grow older and having something as permanent as a set of custom made poker chips that brings you back is such an amazing idea. So to all those who share their incredible custom sets and the history behind them, thank you!

It started for me back in my college days roughly 99-00. My buddies and I always liked to get together once in a while, play 7 card stud circus type of games, bust each other's balls, smoke Swisher Sweets or maybe even a good Cigar. We would buy in with two rolls of quarters for $20 each.

We did not like using those crappy plastic chips that did not stack well etc. and the real quarters made it seem more real.

Great time for sure. Hell, I still wouldn't mind doing that again sometime today.

Then one day my buddy invited his friend and co-worker to play with us. He came down with two of those briefcases / chipcases full of Fabulous Las Vegas Paulson Chips.

Holy shit we were all in ahh. The quality, the weight of the chip, the real casino chip feel, and of course the authentic sound of the chips hitting the pot.

Ever since then we always played with his chips when we played.

I didn't start the buying bug until roughly 2006. Obviously late because all those home Paulson chips were discontinued in 02. I did manage to buy some on eBay and haven't stopped since.

I just love playing with Paulson chips. It really makes you feel you are really playing poker. Gather some good friends and some fine Cigars, and playing cards. Always an awesome time!

The edgespots? The inlays? The combination of the two?

Is it the base color, and the edgespots?

I am curious, because for me....I simply do not know. I mean, I love the games, and the chips are part of that, but has anyone really thought about WHY the chip is such a draw for you (us)?

I honestly do not know WHY I can't stay off of this site, and gaze at the gallery pics of set after set after set, seeing the way the denoms progress, and the edge patterns that go along with that.

Hunters and gatherers :D

Other people collect Magic: The Gathering trading cards and whatnot.

I think what gets me to a big part is the combination that the poker chips aren't merely works of arts and pieces of nice craftsmanship, but also serve an actual useful purpose at the same time.

I really like the uniqueness of the different sets. I have four cash sets and they all bring a different experience to the felt. As @Nex said. They actually serve a purpose.

WTF is that? :)

I think I've been most successful with the PNY's. I've only used the TRK's once and that session didn't go very well
I have retired and/or sold chip sets that were losers. Same for my backgammon boards back in the day.... and the 'comfort level' associated with each was a large part of it, I think.

Being comfortable or familiar with the equipment goes a long way towards generating a winning session. This also applies to playing craps.... ;)

Really, you've sold sets in the past because you were a losing player with said set? I get it if its sporting equipment and you are not comfortable with it and it effects your play. Chip sets aren't like that.

I've sold my share of sets, but only for what was a perceived upgrade in chips.

The TRK's are the only set that I'm a "loser" with. That is only with one session. I've done really well with the PNY's. I avoided any "curses" with my custom sets. Especially the Bourbons. I haven't had a losing session with them yet.

Personnaly when I play with dices I'm tilting so much that I always spew everything haha.
Ever try to stack those bastards 20 high? Can't do it. So then what are you supposed to do, sit there with stacks of 10, like some kind of maniac? No. It's better to spew them away.

lol, when I got my first high end set (dice chips) I thought they were the top of the line chips!!!

I'd argue hard against that point. Sit down with substandard equipment (cards, table, chairs, or chips, or worse, any combination of those) and your comfort level will diminish... as will likely your ability to concentrate totally on the game.

It is very much like sports equipment with which you are unfamiliar or uncomfortable using. It affects your mental state (even if subconsciously), which can affect your play.

Man, that's a strong argument for shuffle ahead at your home games.
lol, yeah, especially if everyone else is used to shuffle behind.

I play it both ways, but grimace every time at the Hitching Post when I watch the dealer having to wait on the SB to collect all the cards before he can start pitching, and everybody else telling the SB to post his blind while he's busy shuffling. It's just so inefficient. :)
