Why do people have multiple chips sets? (1 Viewer)

So I’ve seen several posts talking about how people have multiple sets of chips. I understand having a cash set and a tournament set… or one set that can cover both. But what is the purpose of having more than one set of each? I see people posting that they have 5 or as many as 10 tournament sets. They also state that some sets have never been felted. I personally don’t see the point of having chips you don’t use. Convince me otherwise…
This is like vehicles. Some people only want a vehicle that gets them from point A to point B and not many other things matter beyond maybe cost of ownership. And then there are car nuts that simply love cars... I can’t afford to live out my dream of being a car nut but can safely say that if I had won the powerball, I’d have a really tough time keeping my collection under 50 cars and would struggle determining which ones made the cut. I’d have everything from trucks, coupes, convertibles, classic, new, weird and probably everything in between. Someone else here mentioned sneakers and it’s probably the same level of passion. It doesn’t always need to be a utilitarian concept of owning something…

I own three pairs of shoes. I own two pairs of jeans. I own one suit, and three ties. I own a dozen t-shirts, a a half-dozen sweatshirts. I own two dress shirts, and three belts. I own three televisions, and two automobiles. I own (or have owned) nearly 100 different sets of high-end poker chips.

I only love one of those things.

So.... You love sweatshirts.....

Ceramic cash set for travel
Ceramic tournament set for travel
CPC cash set 1 bit to $50
House mold cash set quarter to $100, with 2 options for $1s
THC mold cash set $1 to $100
CPC tournament set
Limit set

Different sets for different purposes, and to add some variety.

outside of the fact that everyone here is obsessed with poker/casino chips. This is how I ended up with multiple sets.

1 custom Cards Mold tourney set for up to six tables (at this point, it’s a once a year event and this is what I think cards mold are perfect for. Relatively inexpensive, but still able to Mack with what I consider quality chip.). This game always takes place outside the house and is too chaotic to bring something “nice” to.

1 Paulson Aurora tourney set that can do Two tables. This is for games at the house only.

1 BCC custom cash set. I got this back in the day and it is probably my favorite, but it can’t be expanded in anyway for obvious reasons.

1 CPC custom cash set. This can be expanded if needed.

Why ask why?

^ This. You may have come to this forum seeking advice/knowledge for poker chips for your game and that's fine. You can get up to speed here - the knowledge base is incredible. There are members here that have been around for many years and on other forums many years before this one. Some people channel their resources into things that interest them (obsession or not). Car collectors, watch collectors, (really any hobby) have more than ONE. It's a thing some humans do. Now that may be hard to understand to the non-aficionado but it's not really that uncommon. I currently have one set and as my priorities have changed, that is good for me.... for now. That may or may not change, but in the height of my fancy with these things, I've had many sets as well.

Because when I pay cash for chips for a poker game, I go home with nothing, but when I pay cash for chips for a set, I get to keep something!

Because I have OCD...LMAO!! Honestly I see each set as a piece of art and I like to collect art is one way I look at it. I also like to give my players at my tournaments variety. I have 3 expensive sets at the moment and will most likely pass one down to each of my 3 sons to remember me by. I can probably keep going on for awhile to justify my insanity....

Because you need one set of each;
THC
THC Leaded
THC Fantasy
THC customs
RHC
RHC leaded
RHC customs
TRK
TRK Fantasy
Ceramics
Tina’s
House mold
Limit set
Hot Stamp set
Mixed Set

And that’s just cash sets!

What about IHC and FHC? Need a solid and spotted version of each.

I also like having an oversized inlay RHC set too. A lot of great options there. For hot stamp sets you can also do RHC, THC, spotted and solid.

Don't limit your options so much.

Other than the fact that I love they way different sets look, I think its adds a layer of security to my game. Switch it up every so often to keep player guessing to which chips will be in play.
Very much this. I have found that having a big set or two or three helps prevent boredom with any one set (hence delaying the desire to buy more chips).

I also think at some point clay chips may be phased out. I plan to be playing poker for the next 30-40 years. I guess I am a "Chip prepper".
