American jingoism...
Did you know that soccer was the name that the entire world called the game when it originated? All sports not played on horseback at the time were called football because they were on their feat, the term soccer was coined in europe to further describe that sport some time later. Therefore, that's what it was called here until Europe switched back to football, but by that time American football had been invented so soccer stuck. Just like Australian rules football and rugby football, it was the name of the sport at the time so it stuck, if American football had been popular in Europe at the time the term never would have migrated back to "football" from "soccer" and people who like to take shots at all things America wouldn't be under the mistaken impression that the arrogant Americans decided to steal the name. In all actuality it's called soccer here because we were following Europe's lead, they just couldn't make up their mind.
