Could this be the prettiest Cali Hundo in existence? o_O

Good looking chip! I would definitely have to murder it though... ;)

As some of you know, I’ve been working on a Malibu Beach relabel project for a while, to serve as the main cash set at my beachhouse tables, and the key has been to find “beachy” vibe chips, while maintaining some sense of spot progression — which has been near impossible to do.

I’m finally at a point where I’m somewhat happy with a draft. The main issue here is the flow from 2v2w to 3d14 and then to 4w. However, the chips themselves are so perfect for the theme, that I’ve been willing to overlook that issue.

The inlay/label in the mock-up is draft, at best. Just wanted something common to see how it looked. Comments welcome!

The Sunset Beach chips wouldn't work well for these? That pretty much fits all the colours, no?

AS t500 is a nice chip. If you go that route then your $5 is the only chip that is not a smaller spot. Mixing is fine, but should be more than one if mixed, no?

Ignore the non-canon concept of progression. The chips are fantastic.

My only 2¢: are you locked on the font for the denom? It seems more college than beach.

The inlay design is not done at all. That was just me / photoshop in 5 minutes. Wanted something consistent to see how it looked.

No worries- simply offered in case you were exploring the thought. Quick take while scarfing down lunch. :) I did like the rest of the package, quick mock-up or not.

I personally am not a fan of some of those spot configurations - I dislike their geometry - but I know most people love them, and as such I think your use of them here works quite well. I'd maybe question the $1 for the repeat of the W spot; it seems a little clunky for the $1 and the $25 to partially echo like that, given that the rest of the lineup otherwise has a unique and interesting spot configuration for each different chip. Maybe a 2V would do the trick (do any such exist)? Or even a spotted Flamingo $1? Again, I personally don't like the asymmetry of the Flamingos but honestly I think it would make a nice bridge into the $5, so much so I'd probably be okay with it when viewing the set as a whole (as opposed to looking at the $1 in isolation).

Colors here are fantastic. Great match for the beach feel you're going for.

Edit: So, yes, I guess they do exist. :) I'd say that Strat that @Rbonus012 posted seems like a perfect choice for the $1 in this set.

I like the FLV $1s better as a chip, but Strat $1s could be better there progression-wise and because Blue Grain is the best blue. The relatively darker contrast for the lowest denom could be nice here as well and I believe the Chicken $1s have the same base if that would help visualize. Also, not sure if you care about mixing leaded chips either, but the FLVs would be the only leaded ones in the set. Regardless, the set is going to be killer as all these chips are fire and are going to get inlay upgrades across the board!

Spot progression isn't necessarily a thing, but it can be if you want it to be. Spot coordination across a set absolutely is a thing, whether it "progresses" or not. I mean, it doesn't have to be, but if you're making your own set it might as well be a set and not just a collection of different chips.

I’m a fan of green $1 here myself too (unsure of the $2 need to see the spot colors with the rest first). It’s not completely out of the norm for a Cali dollar. And as we all know, blue chip options are pretty limited. Majority are too complex or too simple. Tough to find a special one to slot in here.

I agree Strat works well... just a little boring for me personally and why it never made any of my sets despite trying hard to love it.

... seems like a shame to lose that beautiful blue sky, though. Does green really evoke the beach?
Therein lies my big issue. Each of the chips were agonized over. My original version had them all as bearclaws...

$1 - SB $1
$5 - BTP $5
$25 - ES $500
$100 - TH $1
$500 - promotional chip blaze bearclaw hotstamp.

But, it felt too homogenous. The current lineup has all the beach-y feels, and I thought was spot coordinated, even though the progression seemed off. This is probably why the rest of my chipping journey will 90% focus on customs, and not relabels.

I think there is something to be said for the challenge, making something work out of what is available instead of being able to order whatever you'd like.

That being said, a lot of times you are boxed into a corner. I know I am when it comes to the white/black IHC situation.

Hard to be a 'beach set' and not have a blue.

Yep, the FLV $1 evokes sky perfectly.

Still, it seems like a great project to pursue, if perhaps a bit agonizing. :)
