Yoooo...what!?? (5 Viewers)

are people really trying to argue that smith wanted to stage this because it would make him look like a tough guy? whatever fans he may have gained from being a tough guy defending his wife’s “honor” were instantly lost when he came to the stage crying.

are we to believe that he wanted to cultivate a tough guy image and a sensitive pansy image all in the same night?
I don't think Smith "wanted" to cultivate a tough guy image. In fact, I don't think that Smith was really thinking. He saw a pained look in his wife's face. He reacted (poorly).

Again, this type of thing happens all the time. If a street-performer "comic" in Vegas made a relatively tame joke about a bald woman some dude might have slapped him and told him to STFU. It might be viewed by a couple dozen people on the street, and the video might be posted on YouTube, but it wouldn't go viral, and nobody would be talking about it. If the comic just rolled with it like Rock did, PD would not get involved, and nobody here would care.

Honestly if Rock dropped him it retaliation it would’ve been the greatest moment ever in award shows.

When Smith tells him to his wife’s name out his fucking mouth the second time you can tell Rock has a joke lined up and stops himself. I bet it involves something along the lines of “sure, if you can keep your friends out of her mouth.” He censors himself immediately. Instant melee ensues.

Only reason I don’t think it was scripted is because Rock is clearly flustered after.

100000% he had a joke lined up that almost popped out and chose to eat it.

Mid '90s Chris Rock would have let it fly, OMFG that would have been pandemonium lol.

Right, I was kind of surprised that a comedian as seasoned as Rock was so flustered up there. But that makes a lot more sense - he had something to say, but deciding whether or not he should say it is what slowed him down.

Great video, and yes, the police do have better things to do I guess. This is one of those "lesson" moments though, where the PD could prosecute for 2 reasons:
  1. Abundance of evidence. As mentioned in the video, they have the video evidence and 100s if not 1000s of witnesses to corroborate the video.
  2. Considering how poorly the Academy handled the situation, you could make an example out of Will Smith. One of these "it doesn't matter HOW famous you are, you cannot commit assault and battery and get away with it."
Also, if I got attacked like that publicly over a joke, I would 100% being giving police reports and talking to lawyers. It'd be one thing if it was in a crowded bar, I'm drunk, said some stupid-ass shit, and got smacked. Totally another with that level of evidence involved, on that global of a stage.
Rock has (had?) an opportunity to make a statement here as well, in that, again, because the Academy handled it so poorly by not even kicking Smith out, that Rock filing a police report and/or pressing civil charges would be a statement against violence.
Or maybe, just let two grown men resolve it amongst themselves.

Not sure having the LA DA or PD be the arbiter of what lessons “need to taught” is such a good idea (or well thought out plan) - lol.

I'm still skeptical about whether it was planned or not. I mean, when Smith turns around to go back to his seat, he's got this smile on his face like he is trying to stifle a laugh. Then he realizes he's supposed to be acting tough and composes himself with a tough-guy face and starts yelling at Rock.

Yeah he was smiling as he walked towards Chris. I'm sure CR was not expecting to be assaulted. It would have also been funny as hell if CR did a face plant like most MLS players.

I didn’t particularly care for Chris Rock’s joke.. but for those who act like award show presenters are supposed to be polite and cordial, and that Rock was over the top, I’ll leave this right here…

Im old skool and guess my chips reflect that, CR is a class act for how he handled it, WS is a sad little boy who should've been worried about whats been in his wife's mouth rather than his wife's name coming out of CR's mouth. We are evolving nicely, just ask Don Rickles who made a living for 60 odd years burning people who ever got within earshot, and never once assaulted.
But the sad part for me was the standing ovation WS got afterwards from all the beautiful people in attendance.

The Academy asked him to leave. He refused. So the cucked up guy gets to assault a guy, with no resulting consequence, he refuses any discipline, AND he wins an award to the applause of his peers. I have no principle I follow that allows me to celebrate any of that.

It was a really good movie.
I don’t disagree that the standing ovation was kind of gross, immediately after that. But we’ve been separating the art from the artist forever - was this just too soon?

He was asked to leave by the show's producers? I hadn't heard that... And he said "eff off"? Ya, if the show asked him to leave, refusal shouldn't have been an option.

"And the award for best actor goes to.... Will Smith... Unfortunately Will Smith can't be here to accept his award, so we'll accept this in his honor" cue music, end credits...

"Things unfolded in a way we could not have anticipated," the academy said. "While we would like to clarify that Mr. Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and refused, we also recognize we could have handled the situation differently."

Dang i miss this sort of humour, don't know if it would be allowed today
sorry to any Reagan haters out there

Found some comments from Ricky.

Not that it matters, but my two cents on the matter is pretty much what Ricky says: Words are words, violence is violence.

Will committed a crime, Chris didn't.

I know a guy ("Lapdog" aka LAPD) who works their Hollywood Division. This topic came up in conversation and he said that they were getting Numerous calls from All over the US about the incident, mostly along the lines of "What the heck are you guys going to do about it?". One time, he answered the phone and took an earful from a lady calling from Atlanta - lol...

I’ve seen several posts from known morons that wanted to defund police, but are now ranting and raving about the police not doing anything in this situation. You absolutely cannot fix stupid.

Actor Will Smith banned from attending Oscars for 10 years

https://www.cnn.com/2022/04/08/entertainment/will-smith-academy-sanctions-decision/index.html

"The Board has decided, for a period of 10 years from April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards," Academy President David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson said in a statement on Friday.
Smith's resignation means that he is no longer part of the Academy's voting body, but it does not prevent the Oscar winner from being nominated in the future, a source with knowledge previously told CNN.
