2019 Custom Chip Set of the Year - ** BRACKETS ADDED ** (3 Viewers)

Can someone link to the thread where we can see the background of this drama to which everyone is referring?!

I have to say that both sets would be in my semifinals for sure. They are both awesome, but it’s really hard for custom CPCs to beat out custom Paulsons. You just start from a disadvantage in terms of colors and edge spot options.

Personally, now that I’ve seen them in person, I also don’t get all the love for the Sunset Beach chips. They’re custom Paulsons, so I understand the allure. But the inlay is clearly a not so subtle play off the Dunes, and the cash spot progression is very odd to the point where it would tilt me. OTOH, I like the colors of the 43mm tourney chips (other than the inlay).

The tourney set does have some very nice colors. Can anyone who owns a set tell me if there are dirty stack issues?

These contests aren't really an objective critique of the relative merits of people's sets.

They're more of a popularity contest imo. There are a few folk who take the time to weigh up individual sets. And there's a contingent who resent secret buy chips, for not being in on the buy, scarce availability or cost per chip etc.

The effort that goes into creating a relabel set vs getting an order through GPI are also very different things. It's a bit easier to buy rack of chips, take the labels off and apply new ones than it is to orchestrate a set of custom Paulsons. But not so many people have first-hand experience of that, so I don't expect anyone to factor that in to their appraisal process.

I bowed out of the HOF for similar reasons. It doesn't really matter how good an argument you make for a set - a lot of the voting is skewed by forum politics. Newer folk don't know or care about the historic significance of older landmark sets, they like they diverse colors/spots of newer sets, the owner is active on the forums/a great guy/gal etc

Ultimately, everyone should probably approach these votes as a bit of fun and not get too excited by the mechanics or about one set getting recognized over another.

My personal favorite in the running is @Chippy McChiperson Nirvana Lounge. But much as I'd like to see them get a nod, I suspect they won't! But good luck to ya all the same, Bill!
 
I don't think any semi customs (re labels) should ever qualify in the HOF. You buy racks of chips that are already available. You're choosing off the shelf, rather than creating something from scratch. Worlds apart from having to create labels PLUS choose colors/edge marks. It's like half the work.

I get what you’re saying, but then sets like @WhiteMamba1646 Havana wouldn’t be eligible. His inlays might be the best I’ve seen, and his sets are beyond gorgeous. Obviously, not everyone can pull off a Paulson custom buy, and I am not the biggest fan of CPCs. I think it takes at least some imagination to come up with inlays and to track down the chips you think fit well together. Those guys in the running with relabeled Paulsons have all done beyond excellent work.
 
This is NOT the HOF however. It's just a yearly beauty contest, basically for fun (especially judging from the bracket structure).
IMHO, the HOF should be timeless and not year-dependent. It should also be a contest between designers of whole chip sets, not just owners and re-labellers, IMHO again (Amen):).
The Calendar contest is also yearly and has been run regardless of people having designed or not any part of their sets, but clearly more serious IMHO, since all sets are poised against each other.

Next year I might just make myself a calendar and only put the sets I like in it. 11 pages of Windy Crest Chips, and 1 page of Sunsets - a top 3 set. :whistle: :whistling:
 
 
I don't think this is going to be as clear cut as people expect it to be! There are some incredible sets across the board and I believe there will be a few upsets. Can't wait to start voting now!
 
Great thing about relabels is you can re-relabel them! And keep creating news sets/combos :tup:
 
BTW this thread says "2019 Custom Set of the Year" not something like "2019 Calendar Selection." Maybe we should be more distinct about what this actually is?

Custom set of the year should be full customs and not re-labels IMO.
