Blind levels are up to 50/100 we are on the button with 4000 chips. You look down at A♦️J♣️. It's folded around to you and we are obviously opening . What is your bet size? The SB has 4700 and the BB has 5500

Personally this is a hard spot. I would like to see a 400-700 bet here.

I would say 550.

If the bet is to low you will get calls from a very big range that is hard to read on the flop.

I bet 300. The SB is an 50 something internet and cash player. He is typically TAG , but I do have a history with him 3 betting my late position opens but usually as jams when he is shorter stacked. SB 3 bets to 750. The BB folds.

Action??

For me I would like to see a call here . It is just an offsuit AJ

That is why I would like a bigger first bet . There are so many hands you don't want to shove into.

Knowing nothing else, go 350 or 400 preflop. Maybe 375 if I feel like making the math annoying.

After raising to 300 and getting 3-bet to 750. usually flat. But really, these decisions are affected a lot by my observations of the players in the blinds so far, and it's hard to decide carefully on so little information.

How to play this spot with AJ is player-dependent. If you think you're ahead, you should usually raise, and if you think you're behind, you should usually fold, but the bet size and position alone don't give us very much information.

What kind of player is SB? Does he bet out of position like that often or rarely? Do you even have a general impression of how he plays or how he thinks?

If you have no info to work with, just play it safe and fold in this spot. Don't put a big chunk of your stack in jeopardy in a limped pot with this mediocre hand.

I play this hand the same as hero so far. I can't find a fold to any of these tiny bets. Yes, he could be trying to trap you, but he could also have a lot of worse hands that are trying to feel you out. Let's give it one more shot.

I would feel better about a 4-bet jam with less than 30bbs. We aren't jamming for value, and we aren't going to fold out much that is ahead - 66 maybe? Why bluff with a hand this good in position?

Bb did fold. Like I said , the sb plays pretty abc. I interpreted his range as pretty strong. He does not get out of line with a deeper stack size and he knows that I typically play the same way. I was tempted to fold preflop but I felt AJ on the button wAs a weak fold. I called the 500 lead on the flop. The turn was a K♦️ and the SB checked to us. Action???

250-300 pre, anything bigger is LOL

I'd also see his 3bet as very strong considering how small he made it.

Call flop as well obv, definitely checking this turn as the K is a better card for his range than ours and I can also see him checking AK here, fearful of T9 AT and some pairs that got there (KJ KQ).

Does anybody see the check as weakness and bomb the turn?

Not only is he not calling with worse but if you get c/r here your in a terrible spot. You have some showdown equity and you have a decent number of cards that can improve your hand on the river.

Agreed that this turn is basically the epitome of a spot to take a free card.

Bonus points toward checking back because you may entice a weaker hand to take a weak shot on the river when he would instead have folded the turn.
