A story from someone else’s game about a guy who got banned:

The player was on the younger side (mid-20s)… One of those annoying people who has watched a lot of strategy videos on YouTube but still doesn’t really know what he’s talking about. Knows all the buzzwords but doesn’t fully grasp them. He wants to discuss and comment on every hand he’s in, sometimes continuing for a full orbit after a hand ends. Constantly asking people what they had as a way of trying to engage them in strategy talk.

Anyway, he was running bad, down a couple buy-ins. Made a terrible bluff, got stacked again. He got huffy, talked a bunch of pseudo-statistical crap about all the reasons the other guy was actually wrong for (correctly) calling his bluff in that spot. Finally storms out.

We hear a sort of a muffled thump from outside, so the host goes to see what’s up.

The guy had backed into and dented another player’s car—not the guy who stacked him—then took off.

I gather eventually he fessed up, apologized and paid for the repair. But the sleaziness of not coming back inside immediately after he damaged someone else’s car was clearly worthy of lifetime ban.

I’ve had challenges in my game back East banning very loud drunk players that held the game up. The challenge was I can’t ban everyone at the table, including myself. So I just played Miley Cyrus music hoping everyone would leave. It never worked.

Your entire game was very loud drunk players, except for the quieter stoned players.

I do remember one noteworthy ban from Truman's House, of a mook in a green sweatsuit.

I guess I’ve been pretty lucky - I haven’t come close to banning anybody. I haven’t had any assholes. Probably because I don’t really do any public recruiting (aside from PCF.). So the flip side of that is that it can be a struggle to fill a table. But if that 8th or 9th guy is going to be a cheater or an asshole or a no-show, I guess I can do without him.
I did have a guy no-show, no message last game for the first time. And it sucked because another guy no-showed because he was in the ER with his kid (totally excusable.). So we were stuck 5 handed all night, which is less than ideal.
But this no-show, no message guy had a perfect attendance record prior to that, he always gives good action, he’s always on unlimited rebuys, and everybody likes him.
So even if I had a formal 2 or 3 strikes and you’re out system, this guy isn’t getting a strike.

I would think that you are the asshole of the group. Sorry, you put that on a tee for me lol. I think five handed is awesome!

Ha, no, I take the most shit. I have fun at these stakes and chase a lot, so I catch a lot, and when I do, I’m the “worst player ever.” It’s all in good fun.

I've personally banned two players. One for cheating (riffling the stub when he dealt), and one who thought that angling and insulting other players was "part of the game."

Not my game, but I was playing the night a new guy ate a 4x dose of host's special brownies without asking, got extremely messed up, and slept on the couch after making an ass of himself. He hasn't been back.

What is riffling the stub?

Running your thumb up one corner of the deck in your hand, which quickly lifts the corner of each card. It's a crude way to try to get a peek at the cards on top of the stub.

When someone does it, it's really difficult to hide. I think the only reason it works at all is because it looks like fidgeting, which makes it easy to play off.

That makes sense. I guess it would be hard to confirm that’s what someone’s doing. if you feel sure someone is doing it you can ask them and see if they appear awkward like they’re trying to hide it

I'm still waiting to hear the story from (I think it was on ChipTalk) the guy that banned someone for throwing everyone's shoes in the road. It was the most epic banning story ever. I don't recall who posted it though...

I remember that story, but not the details.

@nlhenerd ... what have your players done that got them banned (or simply cut from the invitation list) players.

I've had to purge a few people from the list over the years. Off the top of my head:

One player (a new guy - friend of a friend) was drunk when he arrived for the tournament, then proceeded to pound the bottle of scotch he brought all the way down to the bottom of the label in about 2 hrs. He was slurring and literally slowing the game down on every deal.

Furthermore, we play in my corporate office after hours when the building is empty, which at the time was located on the 3rd floor of a building that didn't have an elevator. When he was ready to leave, another dude and I basically had to escort him down the stairs. Luckily he wasn't driving. I don't care if people drink even if they get a little tipsy - but when people have to be carried out of my room, they're probably not a good fit for the group.

Another man had to be removed when it turned out he has a history of violent confrontations with women. I learned this from one of my core players, who indirectly had a history with the man from time ago. This one was a little tricky at first because at the time,. he was a semi-regular client of my consulting firm. She asked that he be removed and after explaining her experience, I obliged without hesitation. He is also no longer a client.

One other person was a woman who I'd actually gotten to know and recruited from local card rooms. I had to take her off the mailing list when I learned from a couple of my core players that she'd been banned from one of the charity rooms for collusion/cheating.

Haven’t been hosting long enough or with a big enough group to have a proper ban, but we had a guy that joined our game for 5 or 6 weeks that got himself kicked off the invite list. He was annoying but not enough to get uninvited until one night my wife made a batch of warm chocolate chip cookies, real soft gooey ones, and this mofo ate half the plate without batting an eye before anyone else could even try some. BAM! STRAIGHT TO JAIL!
