Hi there,

New to the forum. Love that there is a forum dedicated specifically to poker chips!

I realise the question posted in the title is extremely subjective, but was keen to get the forum's opinions and would appreciate some recommendations.

My preferences:

-Chips to have $ denomination on them
-I prefer bolder colors to pastel type colors
-I prefer simplistic design compared to a more complex design

Happy to answer any question relating to preferences as i'm not entirely sure what all the options involve.

Not concerned about price. Just am interested in getting opinions on what the best premium options are.

Thanks!

For premium chips, i'll repeat my answer on the other thread:

If you want the express elevator to the bottom of the rabbit hole - look at HEAPS of chips to decide what you like, then design your own chips through Classic Poker Chips (CPC), they have an online design tool on their website. Then order them, wait a year, receive them, and walk away :cool

But if your version of best and premium isn't dropping $3-4k on a set, then you'll need to likely reframe the question and get some more input on here as you refine what you're after

Best and premium though are likely customs from CPC or Paulson chips in some form.

It is generally agreed upon that the absolute best premium chips out there are either leaded THC Paulsons or leaded TR Kings from actual casinos. I guess it’s subjective but any other answer is just uninformed and wrong. As it happens, both kinds are available right now. You’d have to be kinda serious about that whole ”not concerned about price” though:

This is your opinion. Most "prefer" these, but don't necessarily agree they are the "absolute best premium chips".

I love my Paulson chips, but also love my ASM/CPC customs. I have a BCC set that's still in the shipping box tucked under the bed and hasn't ever seen the felt.

Every person has their own feelings and likes what they like. Half the time, Paulson ex-casino sets bore me. I have seen only one part of one NAGB that does anything for me. Absolutely get samples and find what you like. Have patience and don't rush into anything would be my second recommendation.

Welcome to the forum! Look around, absorb as much as you can, interact and enjoy!!

Not concerned about price? you should be!

welcome to PCF. where abouts in OZ are you located?

if you have any questions please ask. also get samples

TBH, i've ventured over to the classified section and seen some of the sets for sale and the prices.

I retract my statement about not being concerned about price!!

Thanks. Yes, per my post above, I prob didn't quite appreciate how expensive the rarer sets actually are.

Though, some of WW's sets for sale do look amazing. May need to get in touch at some point.

Some of WW's sets are USD$25,000+ + shipping to Australia

Listen to @Rhodeman77 and get some dice chips from KMart, save yourself the pain!

yeh, it seems like a lot of those sets are simply rare right? discontinued sets etc.

i prob dont need to buy rare sets but would like sets of similar chip quality if that makes sense.

though the bold colors on some of his sets (LCO's, BTP etc) really are super appealing.

Really cool looking THC chips with bright colors and multi colored edge spots are going to run $5-10+ per chip, even if they are not rare. Especially if minty, Certain base colors will be more too. With RHC you can find some nice chips with good colors for under $3 per chip. That's lower denom cash chips. Higher denominations will be more for actual casino chips. You can always do over labels or relabels for a tournament set. Or buy an actual tournament set. Those seem to often be solid color chips. the IOC set that listed and sold today is a good example of a bright, colorful set of RHC chips. 620 chips listed at $1800.

Do you know how large a set you want and do you want cash, tournament or both?

Yeah, I hear you, we all like different chips. Hell, I have owned leaded THC and TRK sets but now only have CPC and BCCs in the clay department. I’ll even go as far as saying I prefer BCCs to those ones. But I don’t kid myself by saying that that makes them better. It has a lot to do with price and availability for me. I can’t justify owning sets that are $10/chip and more.

Thanks. Yeh i think id prefer to buy a set for cash games ($1, $5, $20/25, $100).

@aussieboy keep in mind they're talking USD, so times by about x1.4 for us :bigbucks:

PLUS bend ya over shipping prices (can be like $500).

That ICG (not IOC. Sorry, I misidentified it in my previous post) set sounds like it would have fit your criteria perfectly. As long as you understand, MANY people here would tell you that RHC are NOT premium chips. You would have to decide that for yourself. But this set sure is pretty! Here's the link in case you didn't see it so you can judge for yourself.

Honestly I don't understand why RHC is considered inferior. I know that it's more prone to fleabites and chips, but in terms of feel alone, I actually prefer it to the THC mold. And besides, there are some RHC sets that by my standard (at least with my current budget and chipping experience) would be grail sets, like the Jack Detroits

Having your own creation to play with is the ultimate premium IMO. CPC is the only custom clay manufacturer around, there are a few options for plastic chips and many for ceramics.

You say you don't understand, but then you explain it. The hats are simply too close to the edge. I like used chips, or chips that are going to be used. And I just don't care for the look of the top of the hat wearing away around the edge of the chip. That doesn't mean @aussieboy or large portions of this forum won't still like them and own them. Just means they are not "best of the best" as defined by the majority. I only pointed it out because he specified "premium" in his OP.

A Toyota Camry is a great car that millions of people own and love and drive for 200,000 miles or more. But it's not a luxury sedan like a Mercedes. And that is reflected in the cost of buying them. Same thing here. RHC is a great chip for the masses. Much better than many other choices. But it's not a premium chip like leaded THC or TRK to most people, and that is reflected in the price of purchasing them.

Let’s not leave out Cigar and Snifter mold chips. In my and many others opinions definitely a premium feeling chip along with Desert Palms house mold BCC chips as well. Like many others have said, look around, get samples when possible and decide for yourself. You may even like premium plastics like Abbiati, B & G, Matsui or Bud Jones. Tastes vary.

If you want simple designs, solids are way less all else equal. Spot patterns are a luxury that doesn’t add anything to the feel/quality but command high premiums due to rarity.

and make sure you get it all in one spot because shipping to Australia will destroy you if done in several different purchases.
