Yes and no.

Sets like the CPS group buy saved members a bundle on china clays, and there have been GBs before that have worked to get chips made or made at a lower cost when possible.

Other chips, like CPC do not have a price break. For these chips made by hand there is no cost break. A GB isn't worth the time, unless you totally theme it out like the Key West set, with cards and other paraphernalia.

That makes sense. Have to love China. If you order enough of something from there eventually the price goes so low it passes zero and they pay you to take it off their hands.

Yeah, I think I recall BGinGA saying something like you'd need to be ordering in excess of 100,000 chips via CPC to see any cost reduction. And it'd be tough to put a GB together because the costs are still going to be significantly higher than something like the China Clays we got for a quarter each, so it really reduces the volume of folks that can afford it, and the volume of chips they can afford to purchase.

If we struggled to get 300K chips $0.25 each, I think we'd struggle to get a third of that quantity made when the cost is going to be something like 6+ times more per chip even with a group discount (and don't even get started on the back and forth bickering between members on color choices, spot patterns, inlay designs, etc)

I had asked a similar question. Plus, at the end of the day having your own custom set that people know is YOURS is kinda cool. Just don't forget to calculate samples into the mix, people WILL want sample sets of your customs!

Back in the ASM days there were absolutely price breaks at certain quantities. And I don't think the quantities were that outrageous if I'm remembering correctly.

Yes, definitely. I think there was something like a 10% cut when you buy more than 500 already. Not totally sure but I remember as I've ordered my md50 customs there was at least one price break.

You are correct. In the end, you are paying not only for the product but for the livelihood of someone and to have something made in America which should make you proud. (Unless of course CPC is in Canada or something..... Mmmmmm maple syrup .... Mmmm pancakes... What was I talking about?)
