I am looking for some advice on a deal I was involved with...

I recently purchased a complete set with specific breakdowns listed by denomination and quantities (I am intentionally not listing too many specifics for the sake of the parties involved). After I sent payment the seller emailed me saying, "Oops, looks like there's a few of the $XX chip missing... sorry about that! I'll keep looking for them, and if I find them I'll send them to you."

So, what was once a set of complete racks, now had one denomination missing chips with an overall uneven number for that denom. It wasn't a huge quantity of missing units (less than 10), but it definitely devalues the set in my mind. I didn't make a big deal out of it, but indicated I was disappointed and hoped he could locate them.

Did I handle this the right way? Should I have done anything different?

Thanks in advance.

I'd be bummed for sure. The degree to which would depend on the denom missing, how many were missing, if the set was still playable as is, and how easily they could be found via other channels to round out the rack. Were you at least refunded a portion of the sale or offered free shipping or something else to compensate for this?

None of the above. :(

He just played it off like, "oh well - sorry 'bout that."

I guess what pissed me off the most is that all of the photos showed full racks, and full stacks. The denom count list indicated complete/even quantities. The bummer is that it is a more rare denom, but the set is definitely still playable. But finding a handful of this denom may never happen.

You haven't done anything wrong so far, but you may not have served yourself in this one. From what I read, you're the injured party - "Oh well, sorry about that," isn't good enough. I believe you're due some kind of recompense, but if you're not completely okay with his offer to send you the chips if he finds them, it's up to you to state how you'd like to be made whole. Maybe that's a partial refund. Maybe that's negating the transaction completely. Once you've stated your position, then you work together to figure out what fair compensation looks like.

Agreed need way more info to know how much of a big deal to make over the missing chips. Obviously you should be compensated for the missing chips, but how much depends entirely on the answers to links' questions above.

1 short of a complete rack is unforgivable and should have nullified the sale.

If it was like 304 chips in the sale, but he shipped 300, I'd be ok with compensation.

As the purchaser I would have canceled the sale unless I knew I could finish the rack.

As the seller I would have offered to cancel the sale or offer free shipping, ect....

I agree with Links, Tree, Zombs and DD 100%... The least the seller could have done was to apologize and offer to cancel the transaction... If the seller didn't give you this option, I would request the transaction to be void or some sort of a compensation... I'm assuming it's a transaction within the community, right? eBay is a different animal imo, and there's more impersonal ways to deal with bad sellers there...

Looks like I handled this the wrong way. The set is already en route.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. Gotta chalk this one up to a very expensive, and valuable, lesson learned.

It was eBay, but we handled the transaction offsite to save on fees. Not sure about his involvement here, but I get the impression he's in the community - which is why I limited the details in the first post. Don't wanna talk smack about some one in an open forum.

I'm not sure presenting the facts and asking for opinions counts as "talking smack" about someone, no matter who it is.

But I'm willing to be wrong about that.

Oh man... That's a little tougher... Ski and I had an issue with an eBay seller a couple of months ago and we both ended up on the short end of the stick... In many cases eBay processes a refund minus the shipping, which is an aberration in situations where the seller is misrepresenting the lot... I would try to get a compensation from the seller and see what you can get... If you're not satisfied, you can try and open a case against the seller... Again, you might be out of luck regarding shipping costs though...

I'd love to know what city / state the seller is in. He sounds like someone I dealt with on e-bay, and the reason I know longer buy or sell on e-bay.

Washington State by any chance?

Sorry to hear about this. I hope the seller reads this and makes it right one way or another. I also hope you are able to find chips to make that rack whole.

Unfortunately, I don't think you'd have much luck opening a case since the transaction was conducted outside eBay.

eBay has a hard clause against operating outside of eBay, not sure you would/should/could receive any help from them after negotiating outside eBay

Ditto as to the first thought above. Though my guy was not in Washington state. I think if you do shit like this as an eBay seller, outing if fair game.

Should have read with more attention... Didn't realize the transaction was off-eBay... You are at the mercy of the seller completely then...

At the very least you could list what you are looking for here. If it were one or two chips, maybe somebody here can help you out. Never deal outside eBay with someone you don't know. It is possible the pictures were from long ago and the seller was being honest. It's equally as likely he slightly scammed you.

Yeah, to me it's really a matter of if the seller is honest and offers some sort of way to make it up to you, or if they're coming off more like they kept a few souvenirs of a set they weren't thrilled with having to sell

I'd love to know what city / state the seller is in.

Seller is Buffalo, NY or Toronto, Canada. Not 100% sure which.

Looks like he works in one and lives in the other. I think?

Thanks! It can't hurt to try... I need exactly 5 of the Stardust Mansion green $25s. Would love 6 to have a spare, but I'm not going to look a gift horse in the mouth.

Not incredibly optimistic... been looking for this denom for a few months, and I haven't seen these come up at all -- which is yet another reason I'm so bummed this purchase didn't pan out as expected.

That was just an eBay link that was posted. I don't know who that seller is, and a quick perusal of his "priors" shows no chip-related activity. I can't help but notice that none of the pics show all of the $25s though. :coffee:

Uh oh. I guess he is in the community.

Now I feel like an asshole.

No, as Ben said, Tommy is just posting the link in the "not mine" thread so no need to panic.

It's reasonable to expect the seller to check he actually has all the chips before listing them. I had a similar issue with a seller years back who was missing one PNY but he threw in a nice and still in use MGM Grand Macau Bud jones chip so i was happy. Hopefully you'll get the remaining chips soon buddy.

????

This one shows em all (taken direct from auction site)...
