Casino Chip Madness (CCM): Best Full Casino Sets of All Time - Nomination Thread (1 Viewer)

That's where we disagree I suppose. By design, it will not accomplish your stated goal. That's my whole point. Still, nothing wrong with having a little fun. But the "Sweet 16" is not indicative of what the community here actually thinks are the 16 best chip sets out there.

Anyhow, I'm done here. Not trying to turn this into an argument, which it has clearly become. Let's just enjoy these awesome nominations and chip pr0n and see what the results are!!

Cheers!(y)

Then the next 3 posts are all Rainman, and 5 posts in the following hour.

"I'm done" means something very different from what you think it means. :x

There's a difference between being offended and annoyed.

Agreed. Jbutler often offends me, but I like him (and can avoid the WTF thread if I don't want to be offended). Annoying however, trashes a perfectly good thread celebrating chips.

slight tjack - when will the tournament begin for rating @jbutler avatars from the past?

Give me the @courage avatar sweet 16 any day.

I didn't stump for Olivia's but was kinda disappointed they didn't make the cut. I do feel that the sets nominated are AMAZING.

Alas, the Redbirds do nothing for me. I know it's blasphemy, but I don't get it. I know nothing of the history of the chips however. Really fun idea around this time of year. I will enjoy voting.

I just wanted to thank Jack for this rather meaningless yet totally enjoyable exercise. It's been a great opportunity to showcase some really nice sets (especially in the nominating phase), many of which few people have seen, noticed, or had the opportunity to appreciate. Some of the comments in the voting threads are priceless...... and really shows how diverse the tastes are across the membership, in a rather small group of otherwise like-minded enthusiasts. Bravo, sir -- one of your better 'best of' thread ventures.

I do find it interesting that all of the photo and oversize inlay sets are losing nearly every heads-up battle (so far), regardless of how nice those sets may be otherwise. That (and the massive dislike of the lone non-clay set) may be the most telling consensus of the early round voters. The subsequent rounds will only get more hotly debated, I think.... and that's a good thing. Very much looking forward to how this plays out. (y)

Giant inlays are hamstrung, because a number of chippers hate giant inlays. Nobody "loves" giant inlays, but many do find them acceptable (myself included). But when it's a close battle - as many 1st round selections have been (and it's only going to get tougher) - Losing a dozen or so voters just on inlay size alone is going to kill their chances of going deep in the tourney.

I disagree. I think People do love Giant Inlays. I might vote for a classic Vegas casino chip or different inlay design over Vineyards, but I love the Vineyard chips with their giant inlay.

I also don't get why so many people are offended when I say that I think some of your sets are ugly. I love my Grove chips, but I am fully aware that many people here think they are beyond hideous. I also know that some people hate bright neon colored chips and probably think my Pick Hobson's are ugly. And I wouldn't be offended one bit if someone was giving me shit about either of them. I think your PNY, Vineyard, Ritz, Crystal Park, Silver Birds, Grand Vics, and many other sets out there are absolutely HIDEOUS....

So long as you insist on using extreme and polarizing adjectives like "ugly" and "hideous", many people are going to think that your agenda is something other than the pure enjoyment of poker chips.

You don't have to purposely offend in order to communicate your viewpoint.

You might as well ignore chips and dabble in presidential politics for the next nine months...

I suspect that there's a very strong correlation between those who vehemently dislike giant inlays and those who have no use whatsoever for ceramics or BGs.

That would be in keeping with the overwhelming preference for clay chips and the interest in molds in PCF.

Treasure Casino is my vote, the $5 is actually a deeper red than the chipguide picture

This makes sense. I have no feelings one way or the other about giant inlays in the abstract. If the art is good, they are amazing. If the art is bad, they are horrid. But when they are amazing, you get the graphic advantage of ceramics and the feel of clay (maybe not the identical feel to a non-giant inlay, but a clay feel nonetheless).

A couple of the giant inlay sets in AC were amazing to see in person. I guess they still are, but not to me since I only play poker and Caesars and Showboat have closed their poker rooms and Sands is shut down entirely :(

Giant inlays can look great but they are not to everyone taste, mine included. Same with house molds. jbutler just posted some good examples of house molds I like. They use a well know iconic/stylized font and look good. Others like the Bellagio, Paulson mold look like just plain words around the outer ring of the chip.

I own sets including clay, ceramic, plastic chips. Standard size, oversize, standard inlay, giant inlay, hotstamped, house molds, etc... I don't hate any specific style/type of chips or love only/all of one style of chip. I like what I like and enjoy seeing all the variety of type/style of chips. I just like chips.

I should clarify:

Some people hate a chip because of the giant inlay. Nobody loves a chip because it has a giant inlay. Vineyards and Caesars A.C. are perfect examples of lovable chips, but they are loved because the art is great, not because the inlay is so big.

A chip as nice as the Vineyard will still lose votes based on inlay size alone. They will garner votes because it is a well designed inlay, but all chips will win votes because of a well designed inlay - this is why I think the giant inlay is at a disadvantage.

I admit, some chips wouldn't work if it wasn't a Giant inlay. Giants are also much harder to counterfeit, as the inlay goes under the mold. So I support Giant Inlays, but I know some simply dislike any Giant because of the feel or the loss of the edgespots, and no amount of excellent design/art will sway that crowd.

Yep good points. though sometimes I think a bigger canvas is required to properly convey the inlay art.

I would argue more people like 7/8 -1 inch because that is the norm, and thats what they are accustomed to. Just as many people seem to hate the smaller inlay chips even though they allow more of the chip itself to be seen and felt.

Well, I don't think anyone likes a chip because it has a smaller inlay, either. Witness the current crop of pointlessly small Vegas inlays.

I suspect that what we appreciate is an inlay sized perfectly to fill up the chip's recess. It just makes the chip look so much more homogenous.

E.g., a 7/8 - 1" inlay on ASM hourglasses looks pretty bad, IMO, but the 1-1/16" labels look perfect.

I generally don't like giant inlays because:

1. They hide most of the face of the chip, and I am interested in seeing the clay material and the spots, which IMHO are what makes a great chip. Splash pot pron is appreciated for a reason and being able to make a great pic in stacks is only part of the equation. The chips have to look great in a pot as well.
2. Giant inlays are generally slippery as shit in stacks.

Rose goes in front big guy.

This made me barf Gatorade all over the keyboard that I blew snot on earlier today.

"Your shower shoes have fungus on them. You'll never make it to the show with fungus on your shower shoes. Think classy, you'll be classy. If you win 20 in the show, you can let the fungus grow back on your shower shoes and the press willl think you're colorful. Until you win twenty in the show though, it means you're a slob"

At least I didn't smack you in the ass afterward!

Well, polls are closed. We got one blowout, one squeaker and one semi-close call, but most of the margins were wide enough for comfort.

Results with vote numbers:

Mapes v. Silver Bird - MAPES 102-7
Aztar v. PNY - AZTAR 76-40
Tropicana v. Lakeshore Inn - TROPICANA 61-43
Bellagio v. Vineyard - BELLAGIO 60-43
PCA v. Foxwoods - FOXWOODS 60-58
WSOP (primary) v. Ritz - WSOP 65-29
Aviation Club v. Crystal Park - AVIATION CLUB 80-30
Dunes v. WSOP (secondary) - DUNES 64-51

Hateful Eight Round coming up...

Not unhappy with a single result.
Predictions for the 8:

  • Mapes over Aztar, but Aztars grab at least 30 votes.
  • Tropicana takes a Silver Bird right on Bellagio's chest.
  • WSOP over Foxwoods. I'm pulling (but not necessarily voting) for the underdog (Foxwoods being the #15 seed), and I think this one could be close, but I think WSOP has to be the favorite.
  • Aviation Club over Dunes based on looks, but history will favor Dunes (even though ACF opened in 1907). Even if accurate history manages to sway a few votes in ACF's favor, ownership of Dunes sets (original and replica) will tilt the playing field in Dunes' favor.

definitely thanks to Jack for doing this, and at the same time cursing him. seeing all these awesome chip sets now has me thinking about another set that i saw in the nominations...ughh

Aztar, Dunes , Mapes, Aviation are my top 4, so due to matchups, this will be down to 2 :( ( and they will be up against each other in the fawesome 4)

My favorites:

1. The '64 Mints

2. The '98 Bellagios

(I'm not a fan of the current Bellagio chips at all)

These are my favorites that i came across after browsing all 6 pages:

Palais des Congres, crystal park, 20th century, Aviation Club France, mapes, rio wsop, aria las vegas, mgm grand las vegas, foxwoods current lineup, silver bird, paulson hot stamps
