I’ve got one of those in my singles display. It’s been sitting on the pirate ship side so long, I forgot about the parrot. Just flipped it over. Thanks!

I don't like the majority of the current trends (RHC love, milling, relabeling, fantasy chips, hybrid ceramics, etc.) and it's turned me into an angry old man yelling at clouds.

A side effect of not liking the current trends is that it makes me feel less a part of the community and I find myself posting dismissively, negatively or not at all.

I've been trying to contribute more and be more positive, but I definitely need to remind myself before I hit the post button.
 
I love chips and poker. But not obsessed about chips as many folks on here.

I tend to view everything with cost/benefit viewpoint and from a practical sense of 'will I actually use it if I buy it'.

I don't really understand the appeal of:

1) Collecting singles. I can kind of see the appeal of historic casinos in vegas. But a sample set from some irrelevant casino from Ohio or Kansas? What's the point?

2) Gigantic chipsets. I see people buy sets of +3000 chips and they only host 1 or 2 table games. What's the point? Just to look at? You're never going to actually handle and use all 3000 chips. You're never actually really ever going to even look at all of them as they're racked in the back of a cabinet behind the 20,000 other chips you never ever look at.

Poker chips are meant to be used. Not hoarded in your closet never to see felt.

I’m sort of with you. Except I like poker with strangers. Other than that and a good buffet, I have no interest in anything going on in casinos.

I think the current trends are created out of necessity, not desire. It takes an inordinate amount of time & money to work towards anything else, and not all chippers have those resources in excess. They just want some cool, unique chips that scratch their collecting itch while also serving an occasional Tuesday night purpose. RHCs, relabels, ceramics all serve that purpose beautifully.

To expand on the community part, I joined in January after lurking for a few COVID months and started asking around for help. Basically radio silence. I think @JeepologyOffroad and @Windwalker were the only two chippers who gave me the time of day, and I'm pretty sure they only did so out of pity. I was told the best chips were all "Private Sales". Trade section and DMs filled with "NFS don't even ask". Sales ads were all "No Splits" ... so I just started buying ... still no idea what I wanted & no plan or direction, just buying. But then I was told that's not how it's done, either ... those "Dibs" sales were unfair because the deserving ones should have gotten them, not the fastest.

OK so what is a new collector supposed to do? You can't give unless you have, and it appears the old guard really has no plan to facilitate that anytime soon. I don't blame them. They can't in good conscience sell $10 chips for what they paid, but their moral (or public) code won't let them sell them for $10 either. So they hang onto them or put them up "for trade only".

Ultimately, it's a bit of a double-edged sword for those who really want to contribute, new or old. Do we reinforce an every-man-for-himself mentality or put ourselves out there to help others at the risk of being taken advantage of? For now, I choose the latter because I don't have much to lose. And in the meantime, I hope to snipe a few nice racks here and there to either keep or trade down the road.

I have the same thought about the gigantic chipsets. I think they're ridiculous. I wonder how much TCR's "2,000 chips maximum" (and percentages designed to force you into it) have contributed to that. But mostly I think it's a competitive, showy offy thing. And f you pay attention, you'll very often see that the guy who posted pics of his 35 racks is often selling off racks shortly thereafter.

Yea I've noticed that a bit. Just because were new to here doesn't mean we don't have hoards of some of the most valuable chips in the price book.

Are you attempting to understand their mindset or are you attempting to make them question what they love to do the most? I am hoping that you are only trying to understand them.

A little bit of both. There's a significant showing off, one-upsmanship aspect to this hobby and I think it's healthy to question or discuss that.

I just wanted to comment that I love your genuine Top Hat & Cane chip in your avatar.
 
I have four chip sets, all custom and over 1,000 chips and used to have monthly tournaments where I needed sets that big to support them. I confess now I have not hosted in three years since a really good friend passed on and Ive had a stroke, but still have to resist the urge to buy new large sets every single day. I also confess that three of my sets are non denominated and my players never had a problem with that.
