CPC General discussion thread (5 Viewers)

I know this has been discussed before, but I can't remember the answer and think it would be good to document here. I understand the Roman mold is damaged. Is it beyond repair, and if not any ETA or what is the status of that mold?

Thanks!

I seem to be answering this every other day :)
It was withdrawn because it was worn out, probably past its life. Unlike the FDL where it was worth the risk of investing a lot to get it working as the chances of success were high, chances of this are very slim and we may never look at it again.
Just say it was fixable to the extent each pass gave us 6 good chips. How many people would pay $8-$10 a chip?

Hey how about the E&C mold? Why aren't you making that available?

Sorry for maybe asking a 'noob' question but since the roman is worn out past use by date, why cant it just be made again? how were they all made in the first place? (all the molds). Cant whoever owns it request it to be done up again?

Hi David,

I have another question (:D), is there any possibility that CPC will add in a future the 1 1/4" inlay size? Too expensive to add new sizes into the inlay cutter?

Thank you.

I've answered that question multiple times already as well :)
Not sure what you mean? I own it but the cost of making another is $25,000 ++

Hi David,

Thank you.

Every inlay size/shape has its own cutter. We don't have a workable one right now.
Also, we need a working mold for each size inlay. (the shapes all happen to be 7/8 wide before someone asks that question)
So right now it is cost prohibitive again, especially as it only works on one mold (FDL).

Yeah, i was asking that because some molds are suitable for the 3 inlay sizes that CPC offers (and some custom chipset in the recent years came out really good with the extended inlay, like the horsehead with 1 1/16") so i thought that a bigger inlay could properly work for them.

Anyway, thank you so much for the reply!

Only chip I ever saw with that inlay was an FDL that J5 sent me a pic of a year ago.

"Worn out" and "cost of making another is $25,000++" has an ominous ring to it. All molds will eventually "wear out" after producing X number of chips. No molds are new, having produced Y number of chips, meaning there are only X-Y chips left that even can be made.

I may need to start planning my add-on before the original run has started...

There was a discussion about this matter some years ago at CT about ASM and giant inlays, that image surfaced and never was clear if ASM had that size available at some point or somewhat it was a 1 1/16" expanded inlay.

Not necessarily strictly true in our lifetimes :)

Different molds require different pressure, therefore their life cycle is different.
Some molds have made millions of chips, others relatively few.
There are spare cups for some as extras were made right from the start.
Some will function ok with a couple of bad cups in, others won't.

Our two 'worst' right now are MD-50 and H-Mold. They don't have enough demand for it to be a worry at present.
The others in use will probably outlive us :)

That is the one. However, to me, it looked like that still exceeded the size I expected. I wondered if they did stretch (it does happen with certain inlay sizes on some molds which is why we don't offer all with all)

I read again that thread, some insight from MarkC79

I did get an email from Jim yesterday. He said they will do a 1-1/8" which he said is what that picture is. However, he said it looks like that inlay expanded a bit during pressing which is why it looks a little larger. But they will do 1-1/8.

Of course, that was 5 years ago, maybe the plan for that inlay was discarded by Jimb with all the things that happened after.

Ok, you reminded me. There is no 1-1/4 anyway. It is the 1-1/8 we have but is not in use.
I believe that was the only time it was used and as you see it did not produce a 1-1/8 inlay :)

That punch was amongst equipment 'retired' prior to ASM Vegas. Retired items were donated to a museum so they are not things I can magically resurrect :)

Actually it is not really practical at all. One of the reasons Paulson stopped was that even with their huge economies of scale (they have 250 presses) and cheap labor in Mexico, they were making a loss on these and it was slowing them down on casino orders.
To produce any sort of volume of inventory to allow us to mass market, we would have to stop all other production while we trained new labor for weeks and then made the chips which might sit on the shelf forever. Even then, because of the process involved, we can't make them any cheaper than we do customs right now.
I am thinking about stock designs which would be made to order, but not certain of the value of that either.

I guess this is where China swoops in

Your site could link to http://www.keywestresortcasino.com (& possibly others) who market home sets made by you? They can offer a more complete package dealer buttons, cut cards etc etc etc than realistically you ever could.

Key West are the only chips we make marketed by others. The profit margin on clay chips is too small for the wholesale business. Other 'links' that existed before were sadly destroyed by the marketing dept of ASM Vegas.

Ah, ASM-Vegas (aka the evil Dr.Ott & Clay Rollah). The horrendous gift that keeps on giving....

You'd have thought that keeping up with his tens of emails per day would have kept him too busy to @#$% up every other aspect of the business. Guess not. :(

And I tried to be subtle :D

I'm not even sure Red understands what the Internet is much less how to use it so probably no need for subtlety. [emoji106]

David. I also want to thank you for the great insight for chipmaking process, edgespot-wise. Great information.

David, would something similar to this be possible?
Screen_Shot_2014_11_15_at_9_56_00_PM.png

I would think that it could be accomplished using a 412 punch, and then putting the 2 1/8" spots on either side of a black 1/4" spot?

If it is possible, any idea of what level it would be?

Yes, can be done. In fact it has been done once. I would have to look back at my calculations tomorrow to determine what level we made it. From memory it was 7 or 8.

Confirming these would be Level 7

There have been reports that the 43mm chips have had problems with edge spot chipping in the past. I am interested in the idea of doing some oversized chips in the custom set I am planning, but with the size set, and expected cost, I am a little nervous of getting oversized chips.

I am planning a sample set of scroll molds with the rounders chip run in both sizes.

Anyway, can you shed any light on anticipated issues, and plans for guaranteeing the quality of the oversized chips? I know these are expensive for you to make, so having to remake a lot of chips is going to be hard on you guys since these things are not cheap to make and are sold on slim margins.

The problems were with the 44mm A mold, hence the reason its not available right now.
We don't expect the same issue with the scroll, it worked beautifully for many years in the past.

This is awesome news. I really want to do my set with some oversized higher denominations. Glad the issue is mold related. I am not a huge a-mold fan, but am looking forward to checking out the scroll mold.

What's the status on the fleur de lis mold? Any chance of it coming back?

lol, you have some catch-up reading to do.....

I know I read something at some point about the mold. Broken comes to mind. Just can't remember what for sure and wanted some confirmation.

David, I saw a pic of a Greek Key mold cup in Redbelly's 'crown jewels' thread. Does CPC have any size Greek Key mold which may become available in the future, please?
