It's been a long time for this guy - something like 10 second place finishes since his last win, in 2013? And unreal streak of bad luck. Anyway, he finally took one down in the $50K at the pokergo cup. Its a series that's been running for a week, and he'd been doing well - through six events he'd had two min-cashes and a bubble. With this win, he's got a chance to win the series if he can get third or better in the $100K this afternoon.
Say what you want about Daniel. I've said my share of bad stuff about him in the past year and I'm a big fan. Lately he's just seemed pretty obnoxious. Oh well - he's always been a little odd and I think recently he's suffered a bit from social media overexposure. Maybe take him in small doses (or maybe not at all.) But anyway, there's no denying that he's been working hard on his game over the past couple of years, trying to move from one of the past greats to one of the present greats, and it look like the work is finally paying off, so good for him.

Did he run into the same trouble as Doyle? Daniel spent so much time teaching people poker, with Master class, small ball, etc. Everyone was playing "small ball", or at least knew how to play against it.

tournaments are pain generation machines. Good for him for sticking it out. Nice to win big ones too.

I’m not sure if it’s the poor turnout (main event has a whopping 23 entries), but this PokerGO cup has been tough to watch.

I’ve been enjoying S4Y’s bracelet streams a lot more

The $10ks drew like 50-70 people each, plenty of big names, which is a good turnout for high rollers, I think, but maybe it’s low for a series? I’m not sure. There’s definitely a lot of poker going on these days, which could have thinned the fields.
But yes, I’ve watched some of the final tables and they have been painful. compared to the mixed game final tables at the last series (was it the masters or the open?) - those were fun to watch. These dead eye Holdem players are mostly not.

It's easy to stick it out when sponsors are paying your buyins
That’s true, and that luxury is just negreanu’s reality, so it is what it is. I watch way to much of him, and I get the sense that he’d be doing this anyway, without the sponsors. I’m pretty sure he can afford it.

I think, much like Helmuth, that his legacy is the most important thing to him? He wants to be back on top. These guys were almost like rock stars back during the boom, and I think he wants it back.

Ivey wins that $25k heads up tourney against Antonius no less, Negreanu closes one out, the old guard may be coming back.

Wynns $10k, two weeks ago, had 1,328 entries

Right? That was cool. I think Polk played in that one too, which seemed weird to me. For a guy who quit poker and who keeps saying he really doesn’t enjoy poker, he seems to be playing a lot of poker lately.

My guess? Phil learned him good dat pure GTO works better high volume online cash play than IRL tournament play and humbled him up a bit. Always liked Daniel, but yea. Lately he stopped being fun AND stopped winning AND started being arrogant condescending and obnoxious.

Hoping he returns to being fun to watch.

Good point. Are players just avoiding the pokergo series because they hate the app as much as the rest of us?

I think a lot of players, both more experienced and newer ones, don't really want to play in televised tournaments anymore. Many moons ago, getting a sponsorship through Pokerstars, Full Tilt, etc. was THE goal. But with online rooms reducing the amount of players they sponsor, the incentive of putting yourself out in the media isn't as lucrative anymore.

You don't have to sign release forms, have cameras on you, getting mic'd up for a feature table, you just go play.

This is pretty much why I've stopped watching televised poker. I barely even pay attention to the WSOP anymore, and I don't think I could name any well-known pros who weren't around prior to 2018ish. Nowadays, I mostly watch vloggers and training videos.

Like em or hate em, players like Negreanu and Hellmuth made poker entertaining.

Marriage does that to you.

I've given up on it too. I do like watching the short deck tourneys on triton-series.com.

There's no joy or flair in televised poker anymore. Just a bunch of dudes wearing hoodies, sitting quietly, and speaking in the softest tones possible trying to extract 0.000001% more big blinds from their fellow GTO bots humans.

I can't wait for a new limit renaissance (with mixed games) to start taking form in this decade when the NLHE games dry up because of this soullessness.

The guys who were the big name pros in the mid-2000s during the boom had built their careers on the road in underground games and exclusive games with wealthy business men. To get access to those games, they had to have some personality, be entertaining, and just plain be someone that the fish/whales wanted to have around. This showed on TV because they were all so unique and charismatic. Televised poker is like pro wrestling, at least 50% of the entertainment value comes from the outlandish personalities.

Agreed. The pros today all take 30 seconds of motionless sitting every decision and have zero social skills, a snoozefest to watch

I root for Daniel because his success is good for the game, but...

I have to confess disappointment with some of his behavior. When he busted Alex Foxen he pretty much ignored Alex who fist bumped the other opponent then turned to Daniel and Daniel didn't make eye contact, didn't offer a handshake or fist bump, basically ignored him as he walked off.

Then in the next tournament when DNegs busted in fourth he was fairly rude from the rail with every big hand that Cary won. Nothing wrong with cheering a bit when Cary wins a big hand, but this was bordering on needling Sam. Then when Cary finally won DNegs just unloaded with whoops and hollers like Hevad Kahn, it was as if he himself had won the tournament. He stole Cary's thunder and he also was relentless to Sam who had lost a big chip lead and was quite frankly outplayed more than once by the amateur.

There are ways to conduct oneself in poker, and it doesn't mean you have to be silent or not show enthusiasm - but you need to read the room and other players. When someone is clearly in pain you don't whoop it up in their face. When someone busts and turns to you and says 'good game' you don't ignore them. His approach just left a bad taste in my mouth.

Dnegs has a carefully fabricated public image for marketing, but at his core is an insecure hypocrite that a lot of people are finally starting to see as he's cracked over the past few years and let the crazy out more

Projection much there bud? :p

How so?

Dnegs called out Ferguson for being an Atheist with the nickname "Jesus" because Dnegs is born again, as if Jesus gave himself the nickname

He's attended "The Choice Centers" which is just amother Scientology type scam

His outburst about knocking someones teeth out and then feeding it to them anally is pretty lit, lol

And he's deluded himself into believing Amanda is with him for love

I'm sure there's many other examples, I was a big fan of him back in the day until he started showing his true colors

I still am a fan of Daniel and I still root for him, but yes the seams are starting to show a bit.

Well said

I'll still watch some of these, but the ones I actively watch are all the limit tournaments and mixed games from the WSOP. All of that is great stuff. The NL 2-7 championship is my "main event" in terms of what to watch.

Bad joke, sorry :(

This is how to make sure @Anthony Martino knows it's a joke:

"Projection much there, you short America-loving, bad poker... person, um, you?"
