Fugly Poker Table Thread (20 Viewers)

I think this gentleman's work has been featured before. List it for a dollar with free shipping, but sell it for $2500 + $700 shipping.

And check it out! It has casters to go mobile! I'd ask him to keep them on!

Yes, his work has been featured here before, and I'm not really sure why???

The flamed box elder is absolutely gorgeous wood. The guy's workmanship appears to be solid. Does something like this appeal to everyone? Of course not, but other than accounting for differences in individuals personal taste, I don't see how this qualifies as fugly. To me, fugly is more universal. Hard to define maybe, but 99% will usually agree when we see it.

Functional? No.
Ugly? Yes.
Fugly? Depends on whether the F stands for Fucking or Functional. In this case I think neither, Just plain ugly, and not very functional. (IMO)

Oh wait, maybe the F stands for Flamed Box Elder, in which case maybe it qualifies.

I agree. This is gorgeous woodwork. If you had a log cabin someplace this would make a fine addition. I imagine this would be a difficult sell, but if the woodworker could be commissioned for a custom table he would have better luck.

Exactly what I was thinking. Log cabin or hunting ranch. As far as being a hard sell, the guy keeps making them so they must be selling to someone. I suspect he would be happy to build one to order and make some tweaks should the buyer so desire. I guess @LotsOfChips would say he's only selling them to fools who don't know any better...

As far as the lack of functionality argument, I'm not really seeing that either. The cards and chips don't seem to be falling off the table. There's a raised rail all around to keep dealt cards from flying off. The felt is stated to be speed cloth and it looks to be padded. But what do I know? I'm certainly no poker pro and have very little experience with high end tables. I can absolutely agree that SOME would hate it, and that's OK. I've seen some builds on here that the owners were proud of but that I wouldn't pay a dollar for because I didn't like the way they looked. That doesn't make them fugly. Just not to my taste. I think that's where the confusion is here.

Nope, not what I would say. Yes, beautiful wood, good craftsmanship. Yes, a custom table built with good design features in mind could be awesome. (Edit - make that Fawesome!!!)

Ugly is in the eye of the beholder. Not to my taste, true. Personally I don't think much of the design (looks very close to the ground, strange cavity between the corner inserts, leg positioning would be awkward for persons on the ends, not very comfortable looking, etc.).

Overall the effect on me is ugly (IMO). Maybe it is the Dice Chips that are tilting my perception. :confused

Lack of functionality seem to be a preference. Racetracks provide no functionality, but people seem to want them. I'm not one of those, but It's not worth the argument. I also agree with @LotsOfChips questioning the players on the end. It could be a knee-buster. ...and what is with those outcroppings between players?

Still, I cannot argue that the guy knows woodworking. That level of quality doesn't come without a lot of practice and experience. Too bad he has little clues to what makes a good poker table.

Isn't the racetrack's functionality a place to put drinks that won't get the felt wet? That said, it's not worth it. The best place for drinks is on rolling side tables, however many people don't have the space for those, myself included. The 2nd best place for drinks is an in-rail cup holder infront of the player, IMHO. I thought way too much about a poker table before purchasing one, and I agree, racetracks suck and I didn't get one. But at least there can be an argument made for why there is one I think.

Sure, that is one of the main reasons, another one being to physically create a line between the chips in front of you and the chips in play.

My gripe is that the transition between the two zones often has a lip that prevents being able to slide chips forward without having your stacks catch at the bottom and tumble over. Plus having said drinks on a slippery surface in front of the player and close to the chip stacks tends to lead to spillage far more often than cup holders or carts.

Ah yes, a betting line! Good point. And I agree on all points - still doesn't make a racetrack the "way to go".

Wow. Tile. First time I've seen that on a poker table. Kinda hope it's the last.
Back in the day the MGM had tables with a granite racetrack. Hated them at the time and they were the reason I became turned off to racetracks.

Marketplace is hot tonight.

Thereby solving the problems drop-in cupholders have, when the gravity fails in your poker room.
More likely solving the problem of drilling the holes in your racetrack too large and discovering that the cup-holders tend to sit crooked or fall through.

If you follow the link, the table isn't really ugly, but the wooden racetrack, cup-holders on the racetrack, questionable build quality, etc. make it less than ideal (IMO). And three legs?
