I've been running a high-hand jackpot at the monthly .25/.50 cash game I host and it was going pretty well until I changed the start time from 7pm to 6pm. I have 2 regs that can't show up until a little after 7pm due to work, and other late players from time to time. If there is already a relatively high-hand that's been hit, the late players will most times opt-out of participating, which of course reduces the total jackpot for everyone.

Anybody have a way around this? The only thing I can think of is to not tell late players what the current high-hand (if any) is, but that doesn't seem fair to me.

Cut from my house rules:

Yes, concur, build it right into the tourney costs, just like bounties, or prepaid rebuys. No option. Incentive for people to make it on time and play as many hands as possible.

I can't remember the last time a HHJ hit within the first hour of cards flying.

I should have clarified; this is a cash game. I edited the OP.

why not just wait until everyone arrives around 7pm to start the HHJ? Cards can start flying after 6pm, but the high qualifying period is 7pm to 11pm.

Hell, you can extend it to 12am to make up for the lost hour and even remove the requirement that players need to be physically present to claim the prize if there are players who don't wanna stay that late. Just send the prize winnings electronically.

I host Cash Games and I have a Jackpot you can with by winning with Quads+ or by winning with the hand of the month (like "Win with pocket QQ" or "Win with a Heart Flush using both your Hole Cards" etc.)
You qualify and receive 1 special chip for the Hand of the Month, and 3 chips for the Quads+, then we do a draw at some point. That gives enough time for latecomers to join and still qualify for the draw.

Also, as said above, don't make it optional, this is the kind of thing that everyone would want to opt out from because you're more likely to be on the "winning side" if you opt out than opt in.
