Is there that much money in chess, that his damages could possibly be worth anything close to that?
Yes, absolutely. Chess, you can play forever, then teach/coach and bring in obscene amounts of cash as a GM tutor. If your name is tarnished, lost earnings could end up in the 9 figures.

Not saying this is the case or hes innocent, but this scandal has rocked his career/earning potential.

He did confess to cheating twice before revealing that he illegally benefited from computer assistance. I think he'll have a tough time with his case.

No, definitely not. There isn't much money in chess. Hikaru said that you pretty much have to be in the top 20 players in the world just to even be able to earn a living as a player. Levy Rosman said the entire chess industry was estimated to be worth about 150 million per year. If Hans wins the lawsuit, he might get paid, but it'll be for a tiny fraction of what he's seeking.

Hmmm who to believe?

Definitely dont believe me, no sarcasm. I've almost definitely overestimated by speaking with chess players instead of looking at the numbers.

Plus, gotta shoot high in court, hopefully he didn't expect to get all that.
Ha, the most honest man on the internet!

I suppose there may be more money in chess if they structured their tournaments like poker, and everyone had to buy-in. Although the fields would likely be tiny.

My opinion comes from overvaluing education for sure; if he could reliably beat Magnus (not just the once and personally I think his history of cheating already disqualifies all this) he could teach and tutor for a long time, and the prestige would carry him. But he definitely way overshot 400m for the purpose of the suit, I was way off.
