Ketogenic Way of eating... (2 Viewers)

You want to make sure the burger is 100 percent beef tho. MCDS probably has sugar and binders (bread/flour) in their burgers. Wendys is the best keto option. The triple baconator with no buns and no ketchup, mayo packs on the side and lettuce buns is my go to in a hurry meal. Its a ton of meat on meat with cheese and mayo so it may not be the most health thing in the world but it is keto.
Agreed that McD burgers are gross, but according to their website, they are 100% beef with no fillers.

My bunless burgers are generally made by me at home. :)

Just heard back from my endocrinologist. She prefers me doing whole 30 instead. Still doing some research.

You're talking specifically about a medically prescribed ketogenic diet as used for epilepsy treatment, and you're right. A medically prescribed ketogenic diet typically starts at a 4:1 ratio by weight of fat to protein+carbs. This equates to 90% of calories from fat.

However, calling anything else "not doing a ketogenic diet" is simply incorrect. Words mean things, and the word ketogenic literally means "generating ketones." Any diet sufficiently low in carbohydrates to cause the body to go into ketosis (blood ketone levels of 0.5mM or higher) is a ketogenic diet.

Ultimately, while keto can help stabilize blood sugar and reduce insulin resistance in some people, it's really just one way of many to control your caloric intake.

If you want to have a debate about the some of the FUD surrounding keto, let's talk about "metabolic advantage" and some of the other trash science that's out there.

Yes, the classic ketogenic diet.

I see your point but the vast majority of people on a "keto" diet are not in ketosis. They aren't measuring their ketone levels on a daily basis (via blood tests).

Any HFLC diet is not optimal long-term IMO.

Agreed Wendy's is pretty good. BK actually has a menu item customizer on their website, so you can look at each menu item, add/remove it's components, and get the associated macros (IE Bacon King, no bun, no ketchup).

Nice I will have to check this out.

What is the general consensus on Queso? I had a taco salad today at lunch with a side of queso but it was at a restaurant so I wasn't sure if they have a roux or flour in the cheese sauce or any weird additives. I also really wanted steak and shrimp fajitas but I was worried it would be marinated in brown sugar or something

Lemme ask you guys this... In a pinch, on the run, what's a go-to keto meal... Like last food. I'm thinking a cheeseburger, trash the bun?

Two Double-Doubles, whole-grilled onions, extra tomato, protein style.

McD has the same thing, that's how I got nutritional info on their beef. Also, most stores have touchscreen kiosks where you can order, including special orders.

FWIW, while I hate their lunch/dinner options, I'm guilty of really liking their breakfast - especially McGriddles and Sausage McMuffins. You can make a reasonable Sausage McGriddle substitute with a minute muffin and a little bit of sweetener.

I'd avoid it. Some quesos made with cheese and milk aren't horrible. Others are made with a bechamel (milk, flour and butter) and are even higher carb.

Tell them to shred some cheese on that salad and skip the side of queso!

I :hearts:LOVE:hearts: French Toast. I made this with butter instead of avocado oil and nixed the sweetener then grilled it. It makes a pretty good French Toast substitute. You can taste the eggs and it has the mouth feel of bread. I like my French Toast with just butter (no syrup or powdered sugar) so even better.

6g of carbs, so not perfect.

Minus 9 lbs. after 2 weeks... I assume most of that is simply the adjustment to the elimination of carbs. I've been keeping it to 15-20 g net per day.

Curious to see the rate that this continues. Lost 4.7 lbs first week, 4.3 lbs. second week. I'm not hoping for much more than 1.5 lbs per week moving forward, unless I introduce more exercise.

That sounds reasonable - once you get rid of the water weight in the first week or so, the weight loss will slow down.

1-2 pounds per week long term is a very achievable goal (depending, of course, on how much you eat, how much excess you have to lose, and how active you are).

Finding a go to snack for when you’re traveling or regular meal times are not possible has greatly helped when eating low -carb. These have been a life saver:

I miss simple fried egg sandwiches... Slightly modified @Undream's bread recipe (butter instead of avocado oil, used flax meal instead of almond flour (much drier result) and added an extra tsp of flax seed for added fiber).

(pic cross posted from the breakfast thread)

This is a big breakfast at almost 900 calories, should be good until dinner. But only 4g of carbs.

I'd love to try some of the keto bread recipes that I've seen, but I'm too damn lazy.

Usually for me, it's a Mission low carb tortilla, Joseph's flax pitas, or a minute muffin toasted.

I do mine in 90 seconds.

3 tbsp almond flour
1 tbsp avocado oil
1/2 tsp baking powder
1 egg
Pinch salt

Mix it all in a small Tupperware container, microwave it for 90 seconds. It’s far from delicious, but it does the trick

That’s basically one slice. If you’re really good with a knife, you can filet it through the middle to create 2 thin slices.

Melt 1 Tbsp of butter in the microwave, beat in two eggs, mix in baking powder and almond flour/flax meal. Microwave for two minutes. EZPZ. Five minutes tops.
Oh! That's a minute muffin. Though usually I make mine with coconut or almond flour.

Such a ringing endorsement, can't wait to try it! :ROFLMAO:

But again, swap the avocado oil for butter and you're making a minute muffin. I like them, though they aren't as bready as the commercial substitutes I mentioned.

There are other keto breads which are supposed to be really good, usable for sandwiches, etc. However, they require gums, separating eggs, and they only last a couple days in the fridge.

I like to spend my limited kitchen time on the entrees rather than the bread.
