My Hot Stamping Journey (4 Viewers)

FWIW I had a bunch of H molds hot stamped by CGraham years ago. He did a great job but told me the chips really needed to be scraped. I figured I’d do it myself, of course I never did. There is some wobble in stacks of these chips to this day, and I think much of the wobble is due to the excess clay and foil from the deep stamps. I also think deep stamping can cause spinners and slightly warp chips due to the pressure. I suspect this has happened to some of mine as well. But the H mold along with many old molds come with imperfections right out of the press I think. Maybe that is why ASM/CPC always leaned towards hot stamping the newer A mold that I think has a built in recess.

How much scraping did these take?
The green and Black chips were stamped deeper than the rest and had quite a bit of scraping. the others didnt have a lot but some of the stamps didnt turn out 100%.

So I thought I had ended up with warped chips but after talking with Collin he said to just scrape them. After scraping they lay flat as a pancake!!

These looks pretty cool. Who made stamp die?

edit- I just saw CPC.

They look so nice I kinda wish I just paid you to stamp them! ;)

So glad they ended up in your hands. Please post pics of your first tourney.

H mold chips don't have a recess ment for hot stamping. The best hot stampable chips all have a great recessed area! But then you might say what about TRKs they were stamped and they had zero recess. But they required 100% to be scrapped. In all the thousands of chips I've stamped. Never once did I scrape a chip. To me if you have to scrape the chip there is something wrong somewhere in the process. A major concern being no recess or a uneven/warped chip.

On the orange chips I had it dialed in were I didn’t need to scrape. Some chips didn’t take 100% of the stamp, not many but a few. I can do either I guess I need to figure out which way to go. Scraping is not the most fun thing to do but not as hard as I originally thought.

This set was the best I ever stamped. But the chips were unbelievable. Paulson Blanks. Something that I doubt we will ever see again. Such crispness and high resolution, granted they were done on Jim from The Chiproom's $15,000 hotstamp machine.
Holy!! those are sweet!!

Thanks for sharing! Following with great interest, maybe one day I’ll get into it.
Besides faster/mass production time, does a more expensive machine produce higher quality/finer detail stamps? Like the one mentioned that Jim has.

My guess is the more you can control the heat, pressure and dwell time the more consistent looking stamp you can produce.

Following along on your hot stamping journey here, very cool! It sounds like a soft brush didnt work, do you think something like a sturdier bristle on a drill would take care of the scraping without damaging the actual stamp? Picture for reference...

Does the air compressor give you that consistent pressure with your hot stamp press? I been window shopping on eBay looking at the Kingsley AM-101 lol

Yes, then you can make minor adjustments from the machine.

Awesome Job with the stamping machine and th chips Pat. I’ve think I’ve seen some of the chips in the thread somewhere before.

Curious. That's my design that @Johnny5 made for me. Wondering how my artwork got made into dies. I mean it's cool to see because I never went past the design stage for the hotstamps and went with labels but odd and somewhat disturbing that someone got my artwork and paid for dies using my design. I actually can't believe that no one tagged me when these pictures were posted. This set has .25, .50, $1, $5, $20, $100 and a non-denom. Which stamps were made?

Very nice. I love that stamp. Might be inspiration to make a set of stamps similar to this.
Any more cash denoms for that stamp? I could see having a set made in a year or so...

This is my design. I don't know how hotstamps were produced without my permission or knowledge. I never went beyond the design stage with the hotstamps and never commissioned dies to be made.

I am seriously more than a little concerned on what exactly has happened here.

If I recall correctly...

You (via the designer) sent me the artwork a long time ago to batch the dies with another run of dies I had being run. There was no further communication after they were made and were sitting in my die box for the last 5+ years.

So bizarre. Last email I got from you was June 2013 and you were moving so you didn't know when you could get to having dies made. You never answered me after that so I had no idea these were ever made. Things moved on and I went with labels.

If the full set is there I might try and resurrect this project.

In for samples!
