Hi folks-

I am new to the forum and would love some advice on my next set. I have a set of Desert Heat chips that I like but want to get a different set. I watch Jon Hobby's Youtube videos religiously and appreciate his reviews. I have narrowed my choices down to Scrolls, NexGen Pro Classics and Milanos. Any advice you can pass along would be greatly appreciated. I am using these for home cash games. Thanks for your help.

Hello and welcome!

You need to establish budget, stakes, and number of chips first. Then I think members may be able to help with some decisions. Many (myself included) would want to steer you away from from China Clay and other mostly plastic composites because they don't really hold their value. Perfectly usable as chips, though.

If you're totally down to these three and there's no budging, I'd say the Milanos.

Get samples, strongly recommend enough to shuffle or feel out. I have a set of the Scroll's and samples of NexGen and Milano's. They are all completely different in my opinion. So it really depends on your preference. NexGen is really light with a plastic feel, Milano's are chalky, and Scroll's are a basic ceramic. So they all have different features to like and dislike. But definitely get samples.

Depends on your preferences, budget, and the type of games/stakes you run.

I owned nexgens and milanos prior to my current sets. They were both good chips but I ultimately found their colors and styles to be not quite what I wanted. Have you looked at the Majestics and Dunes on apachepokerchips.com? Think they are some of the best lower budget chips out there.

Thanks guys. I will check out some samples.
My budget for a set of 500 chips is about $200. We used to play a $0.50/$1 game but we are going to move it to a $1/$1 game. I only need the following denominations -$1,$5,$25 & $100.
I guess I am open to other sets, i just liked these 3 the best so far. One of my main pieces of criteria is that the denomination is displayed prominently on the chip. I also would like a chip that is lighter than my Desert Heats, which are 13.5 grams.

Between the 3 options you listed, I'm going with scroll and it isn't even close. Are there other options out there? Sure. But between the three you have it narrowed down to - it's scroll all the way for me.

Side question: are the Scrolls incredibly slippery so as to render them almost unplayable?

Not the ones I’ve played on. They are a decent budget ceramic chip. My issue is the 500 and 100 do not have enough contrast.

Does anyone think Nevada Jacks or Tikis are that much better than Scrolls? There is a huge price jump from Scrolls to Nevada Jacks and Tikis.
Prior to getting some samples, I think I am leaning towards Scrolls.

I have scrolls and majestics. I personally like the look of majestics but the feel of the scrolls. Ultimately Paulsons is where I’ve landed I’ve got a large scrolls set that I am willing to break up by the rack. Here is the post:

No pressure, just have the option available! (Mods, if it is inappropriate for me to link my own post please remove.) Just trnying to help!

Edit: I also have a sample of some nextgens. Found them to be chalky but a little clunky. My gal liked them better than a lot of the budget chips though. At the end of the day, get samples before you buy!

Scrolls are not slippery,
They are a decent budget ceramic chip.
^^ These are both reasonable representations of the Scroll ceramics. They are a lower-tier ceramic, which will chip easier and probably wear faster than higher-quality ceramics.

Absolutely. The difference in price is due to the differences in quality.

Definitely get samples, and not just the chips you're currently considering. You may find that a sample set of something a bit better may sway your opinion as to how much the lower-quality chips are really worth, given the available options that only cost a few cents more. But you won't find that out if you don't get samples of the better chips.

Your chip purchase should be considered as a long-term buy, spread over the lifetime of the set. If you plan on using it for five years (for example), then a $300 investment becomes something that really only costs you $5 per month, less whatever you get for it at resale -- and higher-quality chips typically retain more value at resale than do less expensive chips. So the more expensive chips typically end up actually costing you less in the long run.

Of the four chips you've discussed -- Desert Heat, NexGen Pro, Scroll, and Milano -- I'd put them in this order for cost/value/playability: Scroll, Desert Heat, NexGen Pro, Milano. And the Tiki chips (or similarly-priced ceramics) are hands-down the favorite over the Scrolls.

One of my main pieces of criteria is that the denomination is displayed prominently on the chip.
If interested in clearly readable denominations, have you considered the Lucky Dragon or Bold Class ceramics?

I can't say. I don't have samples of either the Tiki or the Jack's. But if you like the design - get some samples and play with them for a bit.

Tikis have better quality and brighter colors compared to scroll. If you like that theme, It’s a great option.

Haven’t handled jacks.

Thanks for you comprehensive response, BGinGA! From what I have read, people really love the Tikis. I don't know if I care for the design. Same with the Nevada Jacks but I recognize they are a better quality chip. I'll do some research on the Lucky Dragon and Bold Class chips as well.

Personally, if you like the Scroll design, I'd jump -- and I mean JUMP NOW -- on the chips listed below by @Ethan -- he has the denominations you want, he's now offering to break the set and sell by the rack, and you just can't beat the price point (under 30c/chip). Clear front-runner for cost/value, and you can probably pick up 600 chips and still be under your target $200 including shipping:
