My Tuesday night group tends to have slightly lower turnouts close to the holidays, so we do a couple of fun games at the end of the year. Last week was our Crazy Christmas tourney, and yesterday we did a heads-up tourney. We had nine players and used the following format:
- Starting stacks of 5K, blinds start at 25/50 and double every 6 minutes until 800/1600 (target match time is 30 minutes, and this works well).
- We do five round robin matches and rank players using W-L record. Ties are broken based on the highest ranked player defeated.
- The top eight players go into a single elimination bracket. Finals winner gets first, finals loser gets second, and the two semifinals losers play for third.
It went very smoothly and everyone had a good time.
I was 2-3 after the round robin so made the cutoff, but was eliminated in the first round. I had a tough time winning flips and lost two matches after getting my stack in with a dominating ace and seeing my opponent's kicker on the flop.
Sorry, I failed to take pics, so I'll do double duty if I can get my Christmas cash game to go off next week.
