New board, new chips. First time 'felting' the Lunars from Tina, and first time playing on the new board. Really like it, but the tracks aren't easy to keep track of. Going to have to stain some lanes or label the holes to make it easier to follow them along. Fun time!

That's awesome man, never saw a round board like that, I really like it! My family loves this game actually, we just play for dimes, nothing crazy.

LoL, this was family night. We just played for funsies :p And thank goodness too, since I was down to one of each chip when we called it!

The kids love this game! Can’t wait to get my topper to play this on the big table

Had a couple of questions, I'm sure they've been answered prior but ...

  • How many cards per player?
  • Still possible with 2 players? My wife wanted to play with me on game nights so wanted to make sure it can still be done
  • If the scratches are .25/.50/.75/1 what is the entry fee?
  • Are there situations where the entire pot doesn't get taken? And it would go to the next game?
  • Thought I saw a table topper in this thread, are those available somewhere?

I answered your questions in the box “click to expand”
You can look up the rules on Google btw type in horse racing board game rules.
Good luck playing it’s super fun and rolling dice is fun

We played over the holidays with each scratched horse starting at 1 chip fee if rolled, then 2, 3, 4, then back to 1 and repeat. Seemed to grow the pot fairly well and kept everyone paying attention to try and not roll the scratched horse in the higher fee spots.

Has anyone done this with tourney chips to encourage early arrival ? I was considering giving everyone who arrives on time a free barrel of hundos. Jockey purse ante of $200. Scratched horses cost $100, $200, $300, and $400. Winners split the purse and get that amount added to their tourney stacks.

One of our Captains apparently has a lot of time on his hands and deliberated a few variants to the beloved and favorite degenerate pre-poker favorite. I obliged him with fashioning a board out of a broken coffee table I didn’t have the heart to simply trash.

We already play two decks, $1-2 jockey fee, have never scratched at .25/.50/.75/1.00 and always done first two horses .25, second two .50 and have other versions of that too.

We use a 13 sided die.

The two decks is a must and the non-weighted “jumps” it takes to get to the finish line usually puts 3-5 horses neck and neck at the finish. Also, it neither screws you for getting those “bad” ponies either because they have a long track or because they’re scratched and you roll them non-stop.

We don’t have to remove the Aces and Kings as well. Major Tom had purchased a lower ended set for Beta testing hence the large candy lollipop styled horses were using. Also, had to sub in a couple of Knights from a spare chess set.

The Joker in the corner is for the "Jockey Fee"

We like it and it has been what we do pre-flop for awhile and the board, while rudimentary, is cool.

Continuing to up the stakes is also something we’ll continue to do because we open the bank while cleaning up and sell more plaques.

Good times.

I lLOVE this version of the game. Smooths out the racetrack, more “photo finishes” easy to make your own board….
That said, it got me thinking about the math involved…

Why not use A-Q for 12 spots?
12 sided dice are pretty common in the world of table top games already( Dungeons & Dragons etc.) AND with a deck of 48 cards you have an even number of cards dealt out when playing with:
2-3-4-6-8-12 players
13 “horses” makes it impossible for equal cards to each player unless you have 4 players.
Now I know that you don’t HAVE to deal out equal amounts of cards but it does make it more “fair” for a lot more circumstances (5 or 7 or 9 players excepted).
Just a thought.

I like this thought. The insane variance introduced by using 2d6 is mind boggling to me. I have plenty of D12. May need to try this out for myself.
Just learned about this game and was looking at buying a board... Now idk if I need to buy one or make one lol

I am gonna get my brother to make me a board.
He is a custom carpenter and has a 3-D printer.
I have a sizable Casablanca set so instead of horses I am going to go with Airplanes.
“Scratched Horses” will be “Grounded Flights”.

So let's say I have a board made with 12 racers. We roll 1d12 to scratch and race... How many holes down the track should be drilled? Is 10 a good number? I've never played the game yet. If each horse actually has an equal chance then how many holes is too little or too many?

We jump 10 spots. We scratch four horses; 2 at a .25 and 2 at .50. There are a lot more photo finishes and more horses are in the race longer and no one horse is additionally "saddled" by being a more common roll and being scratched. Also, Major Tom brings in a weird and wild variant each week that involves complete scoop jockey fee and all and a host of other weird things. We've given him complete "rein" over track operations. The game is a staple here at GFC and simply warms up the room and vocal cords of the players. It's a lot of fun.

I think the more holes you place the more money is gonna go into the pot and the bigger the winnings!
That said, I like the idea of ten.

just ordered one of these also, anyone else have one?
Hilarious. That was the first horse race game I bought, well before I found the fineni game and started this thread. I liked it, but one of my plastic horses was warped and ruined the randomness of the race, as he always got stuck on the side of his lane.

Still for just stupid side betting on a quick race, that little electronic game is fun.

Is there a table topper from @rjdev7 already designed for a barrington for the horse race game? I have a board linked earlier in this thread but would love a big table topper version I’ve watched both threads pretty closely but definitely may have missed it.

Im thinking i like this new version using a twelve sided die, the aces, and the same number of holes, it seems to eliminate a couple of the small issues I wasn’t crazy about in the “original”

@rjdev7 has been fantastic to work with. If someone comes up with a design, I would gladly buy one.
Using the D12 as discussed above

I don't believe I've done any horse racing toppers yet, but if anyone has a design I'm happy to offer it up.

TL;DR. It's gonna take a while to get through this thread, but the game looks like a fun addition to poker night. How long does a typical game last? Playing $1-4, how big do the pots get?

$1-$4 is gonna be pricey, maybe up to $100 depending on the rolls, and a lot of times there's less than 4 winners so the losers who just kept donating are gonna hate the game lol. One round shouldn't take longer than an orbit of a game like Scarney.

I was excited about using this as a quick game maybe in between breaks or whatever. It sucks though because it is not random so betting is not an option.
On the one I bought, the 3 horse falls down almost every time and the horses finished in exact same order 9 out of 10 times. It seems that this would be an easy and cheap game that would work great with a little better design to ensure randomness.
