Hell yeah. Lmk how the 2 that are NOT Uncut Unfiltered are!

just finished the neck pour for the Smoke Wagon Straight Bourbon

It’s the lowest proof SW and I had little expectations, but it was sweet and delicious. Caveat: I haven’t been drinking neat lately since I’ve been having a cigar with them and it’s 80degrees outside. So, I’ve been thirsting for some whisky neat

Nose: fruity like peaches? And syrupy like maple or caramel. Also get some butter cookies.

Palate: man it has a great mouth feel. Even though it’s lower proof it feels rich and oily. There’s a tiny bite to it probably because it’s non-chill filtered, but it’s surprisingly smooth. Tons of toffee and caramel and like chocolate chip cookies without the chocolate. I dunno what that’s called but tasty.

Finish: not that long of a finish. Maybe medium? The finish is sharp but dissipates quickly, but it leaves that cookie vanilla taste lingering.

for $30 it’s a great buy. I didn’t think I’d like it that much but really enjoyed it.

I didn’t get to open the other two since my daughter has a fever and woke up from her sleep.

Sorry your daughter doesn't feel well. Hope she feels better soon.
That was a very nice description sir! Thank you.

Definitely a nice description, certainly better than what I can do. Also sending best wishes to your daughter.

Benchmark Bourbon, bottled in bond, $18 for 750mL (or thereabouts, definitely under $20)
Buffalo Trace Mash Bill #1 (same as Stagg, Stagg Jr, Eagle Rare, Buffalo Trace, EH Taylor bourbons)

You would not confuse Benchmark BiB with any of the Stagg or EH Taylor offerings, I imagine. But I'll put it up against the Eagle Rare or Buffalo Trace, head to head, and I think it will compete nicely. It definitely reminds me a lot of Eagle Rare. More study is needed! Especially head-to-head comparisons with its mash bill brothers and sisters. Science!

Benchmark Bourbon, Full Proof (125 pf), $18 for 750mL (or thereabouts, definitely under $20)
Buffalo Trace Mash Bill #1 (same as Stagg, Stagg Jr, Eagle Rare, Buffalo Trace, EH Taylor bourbons)

This shit will dissolve your esophagus. It is the heat of nuclear fission attacking your throat. Exporting a bottle of this to a populous third-world country would provide a ten-year national supply of surgical disinfectant. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. But, once the burning stops, it has all the notes you would expect from Buffalo Trace mash bill #1.

My friends, these may just be two of the best values in bourbon. I'm very glad I have them on my shelf. I'll pay for the bourbon, since it's cheap as hell, but anybody who wants samples of ANY of the Benchmarks, as long as you're paying for shipping and sample bottles, I'm happy to send them to you. I'm even happy to send them mysteriously, with letters instead of labels, then let you sample them blind. (Not my photo)

Hate to say I did not read all 282 pages. Not sure if Very Old Barton has been mentioned...but give the sub-$15 bottle a try you won't be sorry. Comes from the same mash bill as Pappy. At a bourbon night a few months back it came in second in a blind taste test. Everything else ranged from $45 - $700 a bottle.

Other than that if you can get some of the cask strength stuff coming out of Iron Root in Texas you won't be sorry.

Although I agree with you that Very Old Barton is a good well priced bourbon, it is neither from the same mash bill as Pappy nor from the same distillery. Pappys are wheated bourbons from the Buffalo Trace distillery and Very Old Barton a bourbon from the Barton distillery using rye as the secondary grain on the mash bill.

Both owned by Sazerac though...

No pics today but a funny story.

Virginia has state owned liquor stores so the prices are normally really cheap(no mark up) but the selection can be really hit or miss. The inventory is posted online for each store I think daily if not real time.

Was at the local state controlled liquor store today looking for Balcones Baby Blue and I was wandering around the whiskey and bourbon section but wasn't having a lot of luck. Another customer was walking back and forth in the bourbon area and clearly was pretty agitated by something.

I walked up to the registester and asked where was Balcones Baby Blue because I knew they had it in stock, and the guy said 'huh?' and I said 'a corn whiskey'. He goes 'corn, like moonshine?' and language is very much barrier here as his english is pretty rough. But he starts to walk me over to where the 'moonshine' is. A guy stock shelves overheard this and walked over to us and took me to where the Balcones was, grabbed a bottle.

I was looking around just browsing and the broken english guy approaches the guy in the bourbon area and asks if he needs help. Guy brushes him off and keeps staring at the bourbon section. He wandered back over to me and says 'we have other whiskeys' and takes me to the 'specials' area. I see a few bottles I already have, and then oh, you know, I could use another bottle of Port Charlotte, and I've been meaning to try that Barrell Dovetail, so let's drop those into the basket.

I'm happily turning to walk away and the guy points to a bottle of Buffalo Trace - $27 sitting on the shelf basically by itself. Now I'm not a big fan of Buffalo Trace, it's just not my thing. But as a Whiskey fan in general I normally keep it in my collection mainly to distract people from my nicer bottles. People know it as a name, that's fine, have at it, leave my scotches and irish whiskeys alone. My bottle got killed recently at a craps night and so I grabbed it and headed for the register.

As I'm checking out I hear behind me the bourbon guy finally go 'where is the buffalo trace?' and the guy stocking shelves points at me 'that guy got the last one.'

Thanks fellas!
