Official PCF Whisk(e)y Thread (77 Viewers)

In honor of the Disco discussion, I have ventured into my hallowed third shelf for some Disco #2 this evening.

(no the mineral oil is not a mixer)

Been wanting to try this one for a while…it makes a lot of “best bourbon“ lists. Just haven’t gotten around to it yet.

I’m a big Knob Creek fan but haven’t seen this specific bottle. Is the 120 Proof pretty hot?

Red

That is the only bottle of Knob Creek I love.....unless it is the Freddy Noe SELECT bottle. That one is better. Other than those two I think the 12 is ok, maybe the Rye SELECT....not much of a fan outside of that.

Also, no whiskey is too hot for me. I don't know what happened along the line....but I prefer higher proofs now

The 1792 Full Proof is a tough bottle to find around my parts, so I’d strongly suggest grabbing one if you do see it…especially if at retail. I’ve only seen it once over the last 18-24 months.

I’ll echo @Big Jilm’s sentiments on the Knob Creek. I love their Single Barrel Reserve bourbon, but the single barrel Select’s are even better. I can only imagine how special his Freddie Noe pick is! Both KC SiB Select’s in bourbon OR rye are snap buys for me!

The high proof is evident in both the 1792 FP and the KC, but neither seem “hot” to me, but I also gravitate to the high proof pours as well.

I, too, am a proof snob now. Too much of the Rare Breed hotness in my diet. Anything near 80 proof and my mouth says "What is this crap? Kool-aid?"
Rare Breed is what started my journey into proof snobbishness and it’s still one of my favorite pours!

Of my 12 currently opened bottles of bourbons and ryes, only one is below 100 proof.

That’s why I hate the JD 10yr so much. Proof is lower than the barrel proof single barrels, it costs more, and the whiskey isn’t as good.

I’ve only had one pour of the 10yr and I was extremely disappointed. The extra barrel time didn’t shine thru like I thought it should and it definitely needed to be 10-15 proof higher IMO. The SBBP is significantly better and it’s not even close. Unfortunately, the SBBP is becoming harder to find around here and Rare Breed seems to be what’s now flying off the shelves:mad:

I’ve probably been in 4-5 different ABC stores over the last month and a half totaling close to a dozen times and I’ve not seen one bottle of RB at any of them:(

I’m not out, but I think I’m down to only one full bottle.

Which of these do I need to buy? Assuming near retail.

Single Malt Coffey Malt
Single Malt Yoichi
Nikka from the Barrel
Nikka pure malt Taketsuru
Nikka Whisky Days

Not sure you really "need" any those Elliot. I've had them all and they are all, in my opinion, good whiskies**, not great whiskies.

Of those, I think I like Yoichi the best. It is slightly peated though. The From the Barrel is also up there but there's some batch variation. The Coffey Malt is super sweet if you like them like that. Taketsuru was good but a bit young to my palate. The Nikka Days was my least favorite of those.

Hakushu 12 if you can find is a snap buy for me, at around $100ish.

** Not trying to diss those bottles. They are indeed very drinkable and well put together. I'd drink and/or serve any of those to guests. What I was trying to say is that to me, they are not must have (or even must try) bottles. (edited)
