How is it, Herman? I’ve got a couple bottles of that sweet wheat but haven’t opened one yet.

I think its a good bottle to break out to introduce to your novice bourbon drinkers. Initially I got a nose of kettle corn and got excited. Not too sweet but the finish is short and lacking that Kentucky burn. I tried it against a few other wheaters...BT store barrel pick, OWA, and a Makers Private Selection store barrel pick. So maybe I'm just settled into the 100-110 proof but the OWA and MM blows it away for similar pricing.

TLDR - good bottle to impress your BIL who's a new bourbon drinker but you don't want to waste your OWA on him. :D

Getting ready for a little $1/2 action tonight. Gotta make sure the new bottle is acceptable to serve my guests before they arrive!

did a rye taste test tonight and was surprised by my picks

rye line.jpeg

Wife poured the drinks and I tasted.

Her order
#1 redemption
#2 1205 4 finger
#3 Rittenhouse bottled in bond
#4 New riff straight rye
#5 Whistle pig 10 years

my favorites from best to last

#5 - whistle pig 10 years - on the nose nutty, palette smooth on the front end and a nice spice on the back end
#3 - Rittenhouse bottled in bond - potpourri smell on the nose, floral taste on the front end, oak/woody taste on the back end.
#2 1205 4 finger - strong caramel on the nose, buttery mouth feel, spice on the back end, grainy after taste.
#1 Redemption rye - light on the nose, watery on the front, peppery on the finish
#4 New riff straight rye - nice chocolate on the nose, very bitter on the front end, wood tandan taste, peppery finish, very dry.

This Bowman single barrel is fantastic! One of my regs brought some Blantons, so for scientific purposes, a blind comparison had to be done. He had a hard time telling any difference between the two, but one was clearly better to me. Both were very similar in nose, palate and finish, but the finish on one of them was just better…longer and the flavors were more pronounced and intense. The Bowman SiB was my favorite although I could see how one could mistake one for the other. I think the slightly higher proof was what put Bowman on top for me. He liked the lower proof Blantons better but agreed that for $50, the Bowman was clearly the better value. Unfortunately, neither of them are easy to find around here. I’m going back today for a backup of the Bowmans.

Nice move!
It is. I've turned down McKenna, Eagle Rare, and Blanton's at MSRP to store owners and they are always a little surprised. I have one of each of those with a backup, I don't want to be greedy. Unless they let me buy a whole case of a Maker's wood finishing series release. Then it's screw everybody else gimme the whiskey.

Anybody tried "Jacob's Pardon"? I've seen a few bottles around me, but I am 95% sure it will be disappointing for its $90 price.

Just did a Blanton's comparison. Regular Blanton's vs Total Wine Blanton's barrel pick....

And, just like every other TW pick I've had, it lost badly.

Seems like these big chains and state stores either pick barrels that are bland to cater to the masses or they don't even taste them.

Bummer.

My guess is they just pick the barrel with the largest yield… its all about the $$$$

Mini celebratory pour from the infinity bottle. Just got an email from my soon to be next boss telling me that a formal offer letter/benefits package will be coming in the mail!

As for the infinity bottle…it’s easily the best bottle in the house! I really want to leave it alone and start a new one with that empty 4 Roses SiB bottle you see in the background. I recently started a rye only infinity bottle, so I’m open to suggestions for the possible new one.

Wow that’s impressive. Did you take notes on exactly how you made it?

I did. I have a list of every bourbon/rye that I’ve added to it. Every addition to it or pour from it was measured out at 2oz. I also kept track of the overall proof change of the bottle each time I added a new whiskey after taking a pour. It’s currently at 114.96 proof.

Okay that’s awesome! #Science
