I finished my taxes tonight - sort of intentionally waited until the last minute because I was convinced I owed a lot this year. Turns out I only owed about $500, so I'm calling that a win and celebrating with some Old Elk.
I told
@Jonesey07 that I would do a side-by-side with the store pick bottle I bought locally and the one that he bought for SQM (which I got to take home after the event), and let him know which one I liked better.
Both are smooth and very drinkable for the proof (118 Murfreesboro, 114.3 Orlando).
Murfreesboro
The nose is bubble gum with a hint of cinnamon. Taste is sweet and light in body, a bit of burn due to the proof but otherwise very smooth. Light caramel and maybe vanilla?, then cinnamon again. Not a lot of complexity or evolution, but this isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's straightforward and tasty.
Orlando
Nose is noticeably richer, with lots of caramel first, followed by the same bubble gum and cinnamon but more in the background. Palate is caramel and oak, something fruity (apple or grape?), and some spice on the finish, maybe black pepper. Not quite the burn of the previous one but it's still there.
While I wouldn't turn down a glass of either, I think the Orlando bottle is my favorite. I'm surprised by how different they are given the common lineage.
