I finished my taxes tonight - sort of intentionally waited until the last minute because I was convinced I owed a lot this year. Turns out I only owed about $500, so I'm calling that a win and celebrating with some Old Elk.

I told @Jonesey07 that I would do a side-by-side with the store pick bottle I bought locally and the one that he bought for SQM (which I got to take home after the event), and let him know which one I liked better.

Both are smooth and very drinkable for the proof (118 Murfreesboro, 114.3 Orlando).

Murfreesboro
The nose is bubble gum with a hint of cinnamon. Taste is sweet and light in body, a bit of burn due to the proof but otherwise very smooth. Light caramel and maybe vanilla?, then cinnamon again. Not a lot of complexity or evolution, but this isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's straightforward and tasty.

Orlando
Nose is noticeably richer, with lots of caramel first, followed by the same bubble gum and cinnamon but more in the background. Palate is caramel and oak, something fruity (apple or grape?), and some spice on the finish, maybe black pepper. Not quite the burn of the previous one but it's still there.

While I wouldn't turn down a glass of either, I think the Orlando bottle is my favorite. I'm surprised by how different they are given the common lineage.

of all of the random stuff that is done to try and set your brand/whiskey apart the 'aged at sea' aspect has always filled me with mirth
Isn’t blackened “aged to Metallica music”? That one cracks me up. I hear the juice is decent but I haven’t tried it yet.

Just popped the 4 roses single barrel.

I HAVE to find a bottle of wellers 12 so I can make poor mans pappy

I feel like I would definitely try the bat whiskey. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. :)

To the best of my knowledge I've not had a "gimmick whiskey", but it is kind of funny seeing the industry go towards the baseball card route!

I just keep thinking about 'this is 1 of 150 bottles that were from this barrel from this mash bill from this bottling on a thursday when jimmy was operating the filler'.

anyone live near mystic Connecticut and know of any good liquor stores there?
