Found some gold on my recent trip to California.

How's that private barrel?
Absolutely fantastic. It's the malted rye mashbill, and I love that one already. The private barrel takes it to 11. Strong spice and rye flavors, bit of caramel comes through and sweetness, hot at first and mellows quickly to a nice lasting smooth finish of fruit, peppermint, and mild oak. The finish reminds me of a scotch a lot with rye flavors instead of peat. Reminds me of a caramel apple but with cinnamon maybe.

My local store had Weller 12 for ~$85, which I thought was too good to pass up. What’s the consensus? Worth it? Never tried Weller before but haven’t had a bourbon I didn’t like

You got an absolute bargain. I’d buy all they had at that price. It’s really nice bourbon. Same mash as Pappy’s, but the Van Winkle family didn’t pick that barrel so it ends up in Weller. Pappy’s is also aged a few more years.

It's decent. I can't ever find that stuff around here. That and CYPB are the only 2 Wellers I don't have a bottle of. My favorite has been the A107. Weller is good but usually not worth the markup. $85 is a good price and I'd say matches the quality of the whiskey inside.

Brown Santa just made a stop and delivered a bottle I've long been interested in, thanks @Irish!

Thanks for the validation! Might bring it to my home game then. Whiskey always tastes better sharing with friends.

@Ben8257 book warning, whiskey style :) The KCCS rye holds a unique spot in my whiskey heart. While I've been drinking whiskey since I was 17 21, I really started getting into the nicer offerings around 2017, which included a trip to NYC Whiskeyfest and becoming acquainted with Whiskey Advocate. The following year, WA included KCCS as their #2 pick of the year. A few weeks later, I was lucky enough to find a bottle at a local store - my first bottle of any whiskey on their top 20. And aside from the WA hype, I totally loved the bottle. This was a special release (bottle notes it was barreled in 2009) and the following year they released a follow-up bottle (barreled in 2010). Seeing how much I enjoyed the '09, I obviously grabbed the new bottle, and remembered thinking that while it was good, it didn't quite live up to the initial release. And I've noted that here in our 900+ page whiskey thread several times, including to my KCCS buddy @Billy Baroo . Fast forward a few years, I found a bunch of bottles of the '09 to shore up the backup supply, and @Billy Baroo was cool enough to send me a sample of the 2010 version (his favorite) to compare again, and try to convince me that after all these years, I am wrong and the 2010 is better..... :ROFLMAO: and he's not alone I know a lot you prefer the 2010.

Anyhooo, today's the day and here's the blind sampling. Let's see how these compare 5 years later.....

Knob Creek Cask Strength Rye - 2009 v 2010

Offerings poured into new Glen cairn-ish JoyJolt glasses and spun to randomize.....

Glass L (my fat ass is camped out on the couch tonight, and this is the glass in my left hand lol)

Nose: rich vanilla, caramel, rye, some slight red fruit mixes with rye background. Little hint of barrel char

Palate: immediate rush of deep red fruit, some vanilla, followed by tons of spicey rye and pepper. Sweet oak and barrel char follows as it dries just a bit

Finish: long oak and spice finish, dries as it fades.

Glass R (right hand)

Nose: very similar, but sweeter - sweet vanilla and red curant/grape, just a very subtle rye hint (barely noticeable). I also get a soda-like note, like birch beer, kinda cool (I love birch beer). A hair proofier.

Palate: much spicier than anticipated with the nose. Herbal notes, again a bit like birch beer but a hair bitter, with some deep vanilla background notes. Lots of proof here, but in a good way - full force.

Finish: long herbal spicy finish

‐--------

Very slight knod to L on the nose but they're very close. Palates are pretty different - but I definitely prefer the flavor profile on L. R is crazy unique, just a little too herbal for my tastes.

L BETTER DAMN WELL BE 2009.......

That was a lot of fun @Billy Baroo , thank you again for the sample!! I stand by my word:

This is one of my favorite ryes. If you ever see one bottled barreled in 2009, grab it! They're even better.

The 2009 bottle is just totally my jam. And I will happily be drinking them for eternity lol

That birch beer note you get is EXACTLY why I love the 2010! I get the slightest hint of black jelly beans (my favorite) as well with the 2010 on the finish. They’re both great ryes and I’m forever grateful for you graciously giving up 2 of the 2009’ to me!

I’m glad you enjoyed the sample. I think the Kentucky Owl I sent you is even better! Enjoy

Looked at the top of my fridge today. Forgot this was there. I had it out to give to a friend for a birthday, but sneaked a Woodford 118 away instead. Back to the bunker my friend!
