It’s been a long week, and it’s only Wednesday.

You have $300 to spend on bourbon/whiskey - as many or few bottles as you want - what’re you buying?
Don’t know what I like yet, but was hoping to start the journey with $300. I watched some YouTube videos from channels previously mentioned and figured I’d gather a few more opinions before heading to the store. I was wondering if PCFers would prefer 1-2 bottles or more with this budget. The whole “I wish I skipped x and went straight to y” conundrum.
OK, I misunderstood the first post, until I read the second post. I thought you were just throwing this out there as a fun topic to discuss. Asking what WE would buy, which is very different from what we might suggest that YOU buy. But if you are asking for yourself, and wanting recommendations, my first assumption is that you must be pretty new to whiskey, or you probably wouldn't be asking the question. You would already have your own list. I say that because I just started my whiskey journey about two years ago, so it's still pretty fresh in my mind. And within a few months, I already had a long wish list.

So if you are a beginner, I would strongly recommend buying lots of good bottles rather than just a few really great and expensive bottles. Reason being that you don't know what you like yet, and you may not immediately even be able to discern the difference between a good and a great bottle. Start your journey with a wide selection. Honestly, there are a LOT of really good, under $50 bottles, especially if you are focusing on bourbon.

The list @Saoliver posted is a very good one. But do understand, those are all bourbons. You should definitely include a rye in your purchases, and probably a scotch or an Irish as well. You should also pay attention to proof. In the beginning, you may want to keep most of your purchases in the 90-110 proof range, but do get at least one cask or barrel strength bottle just to see what you think. OF 1920 and WT Rare Breed are two really great starters in that higher proof range.

You should also pay attention to mash bill so as to get a variety of "different" bourbons. All bourbons are at least 51% corn, but what makes up the rest is up to the distiller and will make a flavor difference. You'll want to try a "wheater" a bourbon with a high wheat content like Weller SR or Maker's Mark. And you will want something with a high rye content to compare that too. Those are two of the outliers, while most other bourbons have balanced amounts of wheat, rye and/or barley (or more corn) making up the other 49%.

Another thing you will see a lot of experienced whiskey drinkers talk about is flavor profiles. They talk of tasting caramel, fruit flavors, leather, smoke, oak, and many other flavors that you might not notice yourself when you taste the same whiskey. That bothered me at first, but it doesn't anymore, and I still can't break out specific flavor notes from most pours. So don't get overly concerned if you can't either.

Enjoy your journey and keep us updated on what you buy, and what you think of them.

Anybody had this year’s Lag 12 yet? Or last year’s DE? View attachment 1411899

The Laga 12 Cask Strength is one of my most anticipated releases ever year. It is always great or greater, never less than that. The only exception is probably last year's when they had it finished in tequila barrels and it was just okay imo. I haven't had this year's yet but it seems it's on par with the best of them. Just waiting for an opportunity to crack my bottle open. Pricey though. One can get two bottles of the Laphroaig 10 CS or Cairdeas for the price. Though competition.

The Laga DE used to be better a few years back when it was basically the 16yo finished in PX. Now the age statement has been dropped and it tastes a bit younger to me. It's sweeter than the 16yo because of more PX. I'm not planning on replacing the DE once i run out of it, especially not at that price.

Appreciate all the replies!! Can’t wait to pick up some bottles!

I do often enjoy them neat, but sometimes with rocks too.
Get some Barrel proof or higher Abv bottles, and then experiment by adding ice or a little bit of water. Figure out how hot you like it.

There is a lot of good value at $30-60. Start there.

Wild Turkey 101
Cooper’s Craft 100 proof
Early Times BiB
Old Forester 1920
Wild Turkey Rare Breed
Knob Creek 12yr
Knob Creek Select
Old Grand Dad 114
Woodford Double Oak

Don’t feel like you have to blow thru your budget right away. I’ll assume you’re like most here that enjoy their whiskey neat although there’s nothing wrong with mixed cocktails!

I’d start with these as a few of these were already mentioned…

Wild Turkey 101
Knob Creek 9yr bourbon
Knob Creek 7yr rye
Elijah Craig small batch
Sazerac Rye
Old Grandad 114

All 6 of those in my area would set you back $200 and give you some fantastic sippers and most have enough backbone proof wise for a good mixed drink and a flavorful sip by itself!

12 OGD 114 or
6 Rare Breed or
2 Bardstown Disco 12

200.gif

Wild Turkey or Makers 101
Old Grand Dad 114
1792 small batch
Jack Daniels Bonded rye (or Bulliet rye)
Woodford Double Oak
Wild Turkey Rare Breed
Old Forester 1920

^^that's how I'd spend the first 3 bills, then:

Knob Creek Select
1792 BiB
Jack Daniels SBBP
Larceny BP
Elijah Craig BP
Stellum rye
Willett 4 year Rye
Alberta premium rye

Compiling this for myself. Hitting the store this weekend!

Should I get both the WT 101 and Rare Breed? Or just one of them and add a different bottle?

My cap isn’t a hard $300, but I'm also not sure what they’ll have in stock.

Henry McKenna, Eagle Rare, Elijah Craig Barrel Proof and Larceny BP, should be easy to find, low price point and very enjoyable to drink. Also depending on the store, you may want to ask if they have any store picks like Blantons, Weller, four roses. There’s also great value in some of the Makers Private select bottles.

Anyone going to any of this year's Whiskey Tampa Foxtrot events at Bern's?

The kickoff dinner for the week is November 11:

Sorry, wrong tag.

Honestly, if I were buying a WT bottle right now, I'd skip both of them, and get the Jimmy Russell 70th anniversary bottle. It's basically 8 year old WT101, but it will only be available for a limited time. And it's delicious! You can always go back and get the others in the future, but this one will be gone at some point.

FYI, that 70th anniversary WT101 is about the same cost as Rare Breed. Maybe $5 more.

Take the advice to get a MM 101. And for a high proof/lower cost replacement for the Rare Breed, Sub in Old Grand Dad 114.

Wait a minute... Eagle Rare is easy to find in MA??? At anywhere close to retail? These regional differences drive me crazy! I shop at a LOT of different stores in the Houston area, and have been looking for Eagle Rare for more than two years. Not one single bottle have I seen on a shelf, available for purchase, at even double the retail price. They don't exist where I shop. Only place I've ever even seen a bottle is at a store with a loyalty program. And I was saving up my points there to buy something else. (OWA 107)

Yeah, still readily available. Sometimes the store picks will be limited and $, but regular is abundant. A few years ago it sounded like it was going to become “allocated” but never took

That is so wild. It's absolutely allocated in Texas.

Didn’t realize you’ve been looking for years. Just send me a pm, we’ll get you some

To be clear, I'm not desperately searching for it. Just would like to have the opportunity to buy it once in a while. And impressed that it's on the shelf in other states. I suspect adding in the cost of shipping would probably push the cost beyond what I would want to pay.
