Look at this guy. He’s a scotch guy now!
For years I vehemently declared my dislike for scotch…peated scotches in particular. Turns out I just don’t like cheap peated whisky (I’ve only had Chivas, Cutty and J&B before). In the Benriach, I can pick out all the underlying notes even with a predominant smokiness. I don’t know where on the “peat scale” this one sits, but there’s nothing off putting in this whisky. Will I come around to the ones chocked full of sod, bandaids and iodine? Don’t know, but one month ago it was a hell never…now I’m not so sure  :ROFLMAO:

@RocAFella1 and I were having pours of bourbons and ryes last night. My wife said, “Are you going to pour something for me?” I said, “EH Taylor?” (her favorite). “She said, “No. Scotch. How about Lagavulin?”

So maybe go there next. The bandaid and iodine will come later.

A quick online ABC inventory search for my county shows 2 different Lagavulin offerings to choose from…The Offerman Carribean Rum Cask ($90) and the 16yr ($110). I know the “correct” answer is probably both, but if I only grab one, is there one that I should grab first?

Baby steps, we'll get you there buddy. It is 100000% an acquired taste.

So maybe go there next

Lagavulin is good stuff. IIRC one of my gateway scotches that really kicked shit off was Oban 14. It's not a really peaty offering, but just a crazy crazy well balanced flavor profile that includes just enough smoke to get you to notice and appreciate it.

I think Oban 14 is fairly easy to get here too. Without really having anything to compare with, I think the Smoky 12 that I got is very attention grabbing. Guess the science experiment begins shortly

Edit…Oban 14 is everywhere in my county and it’s $95

Has anyone tried this before? I picked up a bottle while traveling. I’ve tried the Yamazaki 12 but haven’t ever seen this before. Picture taken from the internet.

The Laga 16 is much more of a traditional Islay than the currently faddish rum-finished. If you enjoy it, you might move on to Ardbeg (or Port Ellen, if you can find any).

I would stay away from Laphroaig unless the peat is all you're looking for or you're a runamuck James Bond fan...

(Oh, and thanks to those who've mentioned Oban 14, one of the great classics.)

OK, you've done it -- you made me thirsty just as we finished our dinner wine, a 2018 Ridge Hooker Creek zin...

So right now we're sipping glasses of Glen Grant 1954, which just happens to be the year of my wife's birth. (God, it's superb!)

We needed something to do while waiting out tonight's hurricane...

Thank you! :cool

Mmmmm...... tasty sherry flavored band aids......
I warned you about the Laphroaigs! :cool

But I suppose seeing all those Black Sands would make anything drinkable, especially to a Jersey guy. :cool

(I have a sizable set too, and still love them. They're simply beautiful. And the black $20 is one of the most beautiful chips I've ever seen!)

Hey, why do all these pix in my Black Sands directory from 2019 have your name and Butler's all over them?:cool
It's a great set, the color matching on the inlay for the cash denominations is just perfect. And yes the black $20s are gorgeous.

I mean crazy similar to Oban 14 in flavor. Got more bite and more band aid on the nose. Oban is so smooth...this has an actual finish. Enjoying this a lot.

Clynelish, Oban, Highland Park, Glen Scotia, Springbank, Glenfarclas, Ardbeg -- monsters to suit your mood.

And don't ignore bottling specialists, like Murray McDavid, Blackadder, G&M, Cadenheads, BB&R, etc. There are a lot of surprises out there beyond Macallan, Glenlivet, and the other big names.
