The reasoning was that they wanted to keep down the amount of games (so the time frame and impact on the hosting nation isn't too large) and that no team plays more than 7 games, just like now (pressure from the clubs so their players don't get injured).

Now it's 6 games per group, so 48. Then 16 teams in the knockout stages, meaning another 16 games.

2026 it will be 16 groups with 3 matches per group, so 48 games like now. 32 proceed to the knockout stages meaning another 32 games. Also, 32 teams will get 3 matches, just like it is now.

Only 16 more games when adding 18 teams while guaranteeing that the same amount of teams are guaranteed 3 games is mathematically pretty neat, but it comes with collusion problems and that the final round drama won't be as profound.
Had to read that 3 times  :ROFLMAO:

The thing is you’ll have 48 teams worth of supporters turning up and 16 only getting to play 2 games before being papped out. If Scotland ever qualify again we’ll be one of the 16 going home early. Hardly seems worth it.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha horrible wee prick!!!

Portugal are spiteful little pricks, eh? Uruguay knocks them out in 2018 and they assure to screw them this time by playing their reserves with their status in the group undisputed.
No idea about that. Uruguay are the villains of world football. And he’s the worst of the lot of them. A diving, cheating, biting, hand balling, racist wee c*nt. Delighted he’s out on his arse  :ROFLMAO:

I've always been a Liverpool fan and he did some great things for the club. But still... I do agree, lol.

I can't disagree. But regarding the hand ball against Ghana of which I believe you refer:

That hand ball was in a situation that arose from a free kick which was given due to a... you guessed it! A dive by Ghana! Therefore, had Ghana scored there, they would have scored through cheating! Fact!

And since I'm not five anymore I no longer believe in the BS line "two wrongs don't make a right". Of course 2 wrongs in some circumstances make a right! This is the perfect example! Ghana cheated to get the goal, and Suarez cheated them right back to deny them it! Justice!!

And I cheered for Ghana that night, make no mistake! It was time for Africa!

Lukaku had 4 golden opportunities yesterday. Blew them all. Anyone have any clever ideas going forward ? There’s money to be made if you’re right.

When Suarez was playing for Liverpool and Barcelona I despised him. It was at least 50% because of how good he was, and the rest because of his diving/biting antics.

Regarding that hand ball against Ghana, was it really cheating? I propose that it was not. It committed a foul, and the ref gave the appropriate punishment. In the NBA players intentionally foul each other all the time, and the other team gets a free-throw. No one considers that cheating, it's just a strategy. I argue that Suarez made the only play available to him to keep his team in the game, it was a long shot, but it paid off.

He was down to his last chip, had to go all in with 7 2, and somehow managed to come back and win the game.

Yeah, it's just part of the strategy of the game. Just like taking a yellow card by stopping a counter attack opportunity. Or more extreme taking a red card like the Solskjær video above.

The biting though, that's just bad sportsmanship and makes zero sense.

Going forward? This is old news, I knew it a week ago! Didn't you know that Lukaka=36, same as "had4opportunitiesandblewthemall" and "belgiumknockedoutinthegroupstages"

Suarez=42, same as "uruguaybitesthedust"

Wake up, sheep!

Pm me if you want to know the quarterfinalists and I'll send my paypal details.

At least he created chances compared to his fellow team mates.

In the end it did not roll his way but that's football.

NB : I'm not a fan of Belgium national team but I'd have loved to see them going further in the tournament for all the peuple here in Belgium supporting the team.

I dislike Suarez as much as the next guy, but I can appreciate the handball save on the line. Same way I'm booting a striker to the ground if he gets past me and looks certain to score.

Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

And he got the red card and the PK was given. It's not fair play though but here it has been ruled at it should - not as the Thierry Henry's handball against EIRE for instance.

Yes, a game of football can be incredibly boring if both teams employ a careful defensive strategy and are unwilling to take any risks. I do enjoy that there is no downtime though, and the strategy moves happen while the ball is in play i.e. passing the ball around trying to find openings.

The American kind seems way too slowly paced with way too many interuptions. Every play is just a few seconds followed by a long downtime. I just don’t get. Granted, I haven’t really given it a chance. I do like hockey which is sorta similar with downtime, but then the actual play is definitely a lot closer to football than American football.

This is obviously just a big IMO and I’m not sure what I’m trying to say here. Calling one ”football” and the other ”soccer”, makes zero fking sense though, that’s a fact ;)

I think that taking a yellow or a red for your team is not cheating, it's part of the strategy. Maybe I think so because I used to compete at a high level in a sport were deliberate fouls are taken all the time as part of the game? I totally get why some disagree with this

But FIFA wants it to be this way, so who are we to disagree? How do I know? Because had FIFA not wanted people to take deliberate yellow cards, then they would have made deliberate yellow into instant reds, and deliberate reds would automatically get longer suspensions.

I actually consider Ghana's dive that caused the free kick to be more cheating than Suarez subsequent handball save. Ghana did it to trick the referee, while Suarez pretty much knew he was going to get a red. It's all a grey area, though.

Not being fair play is different than cheating.

Suarez was not fair-play but the rules were applied (red card+ PK).

Diving is for me pure cheating as it has the intent to deceive the referee.

In Poker there is also a difference between bad etiquette and cheating.

I agree, diving, faking contact and injuries are embarressments of the game. Fucking primadonnas. They should come down on these things much harder, especially now when there is access to VAR.

Women’s football has not yet been infected or, maybe, they are just tougher than the ”men” and it won’t go there.

VAR was meant to eliminate the diving / simulation from the game but it hasn’t made one bit of difference. Personally I think it kills the game. I’d scrap it.
Keep the goal line technology but the rest of it can fuck off.

The way rugby uses it is so much better. Big screens in the stadium and you get to hear the conversation between the referee and the VAR. In football it’s kept all cloak and dagger and the wrong decision still gets made.

We’ve had VAR in Scotland and it’s a complete joke. Corrupt referees are just as corrupt as ever. If anything it’s made the matter worse.

Yeah, you’re right it’s not used properly. The VAR by-the-centimeter measurements of offsides or finding ridiculous involuntary hands penalty situations are just tiresome.

It’s not safe to celebrate a single goal anymore because you know someone with a fking magnifying glass has to review the footage first. I’m all for correct rulings but sometimes it’s just too much.

Wrong decisions gets made way less often than before VAR though. I like it.

For example
It has pretty much eliminated wrong offside goals.
It has made penalty decisions much more accurate
Goalline tech like you said

It has made the unclear goals actually scored for whatever reason have a much higher degree of correctness. I don't see why this is a bad thing.

(Sure. It can still be improved upon, but it's already a great improvement to the game imo)

Not in Scotland. Check this out for the “conclusive angle that this was offside. The other VAR camera was filming the Celtic dugout and missed the goal. Incompetent fools.

Not in Scotland. Check this out. Ball hits defender in back and top of arm. He has no idea where ball is. Penalty given.

We won both of these games despite the shitshow that is VAR. It’s made the game worse here.

Amen!

Women’s football has not yet been infected or, maybe, they are just tougher than the ”men” and it won’t go there.
I consider my self a feminist, but in this case I don't believe it has to to with toughness. There's just not enough money in womens football to warrant diving. The "sport" side of things still outways financial reward. If women start making the same kind of money as men, they'll be diving just the same.

Related: Sometimes I hear people saying "it wouldn't look like this if hockey/rugby/[insert tough sport] players played football!"
No, not at first! But if they want to make it into the big leagues and make some real money then you better believe they'll start diving!

Fact: The football rule book forces you to dive!

Don't believe me? So when was the last time you saw a player with a scoring chance get slighty kicked on the chin, slightly lose balance, slightly lose his opportunity to score, and get awarded a free kick/penalty? Never? That's why you have to fall if you want justice served!

I'm thinking football should adopt the hockey way for penalties and close free kicks: Let the player try to score, and if he doesn't, then award the penalty or free kick. That, and vigilant VAR, would remove a lot of diving.

+ let the teams challenge decisions just like eagle eye in tennis!

It’s not safe to celebrate a single goal anymore because you know someone with a fking magnifying glass has to review the footage first.
That's a fair consideration. But, it has to be weighed against all the action and the number of goals we've seen that wouldn't have been goals before. Heck, since offside was called instantly before, we wouldn't even see the ball go into the net! Like the fantastic lobb the other day (Senegal?). It was CLEARLY offside, everyone knew it! Until VAR showed it wasn't. We would never had seen that lobb with the old rules!

I have hope for VAR. It's been used way better 2022 vs 2018
