Official Worldwide Football (Soccer) Discussion Thread (4 Viewers)

Going forward? This is old news, I knew it a week ago! Didn't you know that Lukaka=36, same as "had4opportunitiesandblewthemall" and "belgiumknockedoutinthegroupstages"

Suarez=42, same as "uruguaybitesthedust"

Wake up, sheep!

Pm me if you want to know the quarterfinalists and I'll send my paypal details.
What does this even mean ?

The curse of the teams with the same abbreviated letters on the scoreboard have shown its head. AUS & USA.. Im hoping that beating Australia in the Rd of 16 is an omen for Argentina like is was for Italy in 2006.

Just don't understand how Messi vs Ronaldo is still even a discussion after tonight...
I've always preferred Messi but I'll admit mostly because I really hate Ronaldo's attitude and really admire Messi's.

They do different things. Frequently they have the same result but they do them in different ways.

Ronaldo has also developed over his career from a winger to a true centre. Messi has always been relatively the same play style. Not better or worse, just different.

Both are amazing at place kicks, Ronaldo with movement and Messi with precision.

Neither are in their prime. Ronaldo definitely seems to 'care' a lot less, maybe not less than normal, but less than Messi. Messi always works hard but not as hard as he once could just given his age.

In this tournament Messi has the better squad but Portugal should have a slightly easier path to the Semi-Finals.

The conclusion I've come to after all these years is that Messi is a better footballer, but Ronaldo a better athlete. However, if I had to choose either player to come on as a substitute to change a game with 20 minutes left, it would be Messi — and it's not even close.

Messi is amazing in spite of his body, even with the hormone treatments as a youth. He made his natural disadvantage an advantage, 'low center of gravity' is an incredibly nice way to say 'he is WAY shorter than you'd want a centre to be'.

Messi off the bench with 20 minutes left is going to completely screw up the opponents defense as they have to rework to adapt to him.

Let’s keep an eye on Mbappe. Already has one World Cup. When he moves on from PSG to Madrid (it’s going to happen) he’ll start adding European cups as well. He has the potential to be better than both Messi and Ronaldo.

Poland is overwhelmingly the better team here, the score should be the other way.

France's defence is really disjointed and they seem to want the goalie to lose a ball with his feet and someone to tap it in.

That Haaland kid looks decent, too...

Playing for PSG isn't doing him any favors.

Absolutely, but unfortunately for him being from Norway doesn't do him any favours when we are talking world Cup stats, lol. But hopefully he'll actually make us qualify for the next ones.

Yeah, will be such a shame not to see him on the world stage! Fingers crossed.

You could be right...

What. A. Goal.

The reasoning was that they wanted to keep down the amount of games (so the time frame and impact on the hosting nation isn't too large) and that no team plays more than 7 games, just like now (pressure from the clubs so their players don't get injured).

Now it's 6 games per group, so 48. Then 16 teams in the knockout stages, meaning another 16 games.

2026 it will be 16 groups with 3 matches per group, so 48 games like now. 32 proceed to the knockout stages meaning another 32 games. Also, 32 teams will get 3 matches, just like it is now.

Only 16 more games when adding 16 teams while guaranteeing that the same amount of teams are guaranteed 3 games is mathematically pretty neat, but it comes with collusion problems and that the final round drama won't be as profound.

I can't believe it took them this long to realize.
I would prefer the current 32 team format, but if 48 teams, then 4-team groups >>> 3-team groups IMO.

100%. The links of him going to English teams are total hogwash.

VAR is a joke. How’s that a penalty?
I don't know dude, I'm fine with it being a handball. If you are between the goal and the ball for a shot the bar is really high for it not to be a hand ball if your arm is away from your body. You have to keep your arms in or it is your fault if the ball hits it. It's really easy to have a hard and fast rule there.
