While they may very well be shenanigans involved, having France and Portugal meet in the finals is hardly proof of it, both were definitely contenders from the start. Also, the tweet had made just as much sense if Brazil with Neymar had faced one of those teams in the finals, so at least 3 permutations would work, all very likely.

Now if Qatar had faced Saudi Arabia in the finals, then the tinfoil hat would be coming on! :-)

What's the size of the country got to do with it, sorry? Croatia have always produced world class talent, and have proven time and time again that they can mix it with the best teams in the world. It's not the size of the country — but the quality of the talent (and that can come from any-sized country).

I didn't mean size as in population or square km (1 km is about 4213 forearms for you uk folk or 2125 freedom eagles for those in the US), I meant as football nations. For example, Sweden both has a larger population than Croatia and its area is more square forearms, but I consider it a smaller football nation.

Point taken that Croatia has had great results, but I still think they are small enough to take the bronze medal game seriously and not just let their bench play as some of the larger (football) nations have done in the past.

Croatia did come second in the last world cup, so definitely a good team thats for sure. But at this point Morocco have pretty much proven all previous stats worthless, lol, so its hard to say. The will of the Moroccans have gotten them this far, but I have a feeling their team is not healthy enough to win the last game. They had to sub out their whole back four (IIRC?) in the semi final, or at least several or their best players. The crazy running and dedication so far has taken its toll on the team, and I don't think they have that good of a bench as the other big teams. They might just be too tired to pull through. Hope im wrong though, as I would love to see them get that well deserved thrid place!

I honestly don’t get the point of the third place game. They should just call it the “who gives a fuck” game. If I had lost a semifinal my brain would already be on the plane home. Seems a bit shite to make them go back out for a meaningless game.

You can ask any Swede, Turk, or Croatian (pre 2018) whether or not the third place game is meaningless. I think most will disagree with you!
I even think the Belgiums where happy with Bronze if I remember correctly, even though they were among the favorites that year.

I get that some larger (football) nations find it pointless. But if you ask me, checking out mentally before the game (as a lot have done in the past) is arrogant and entitled. Ffs, you have a chance at a medal for yourself and, more importantly, your country! Give it your all!!

(Unless it's the ice hockey world championships! Who gives a fuck about that bronze?? Skip it!!)

That’s an interesting point of view. We’ve never got out the group stage so I can’t speak from personal experience. I couldn’t give a fuck about a bronze or even a silver medal. Nobody remembers the runners up.
If I had to play that game I would give the reserves a run out. Would rather not play it at all though.

Probably find fans of clubs that experience a lot of domestic success have a similar attitude. So you could be right about being entitled.

It's interesting to hear this perspective. I know a lot of people share your view.

It's also very interesting that Olympic bronzes are sooooo much more coveted than World Cup bronzes. For example, if someone from Scotland took an upset Olympic bronze in e.g. the 100m dash, you would probably be happy and proud? But if Scotland took the World Cup bronze you couldn't care less?

Not offended at all mate. Was just saying that you might be right. If you support a team that wins all the time perhaps you don’t appreciate the others in the competition. I mean if you’re in Scotland only two teams have a chance of winning the league yet thousands go and see their teams that the know won’t win anything. Got to admire those fans.
 
Interesting scenes after the final whistle. The Croatian players and fans were happy (?), the Moroccan players surrounded the referee to complain, the Maroccan fans were disappointed....all after a completely meaningless game? :sneaky:

I saw the Croatian winning goal this morning and the fans were delighted about it. It means something to them.

Personally I would scrap the third place game. I don’t see the point of it. I don’t think I’ve ever watched a third place game. I certainly couldn’t tell you who’s won any of them since 1982 (when I started watching World Cups).

That’s pretty impressive. I do get celebrating your team reaching the semi final and I would go and cheer Scotland if that ever happened (it won’t) but I don’t see why we need to know who was third and who was fourth. Seems pointless to me.

I don’t get it. Just cancel that pointless game and let the players go home. Imagine how you’d feel if a player got seriously injured playing in that nonsense.

I'd be embarrassed to have to even play in a third place game. Podiums don't exist in football.
