Sweden had a great team and made a great tournament in 94.
The little final was Sweden VS Bulgary, 2 teams that beats France in the qualifying group.
Awfull memory for us.
We were completely outmatched in the semi final vs Brazil but didn’t conceed a goal until around minute 80, I think. So the dream of a final was definitely alive until then.

Destroying Bulgary 4-0 in the bronze match definitely made a huge difference in how that world cup is remembered over here.

Coming from world cup 1990 where Sweden lost all three games 1-2, even reaching the play offs in 94 was a big deal, let alone the semi final obv. But I really don’t think the team would have been received nearly as well coming back, without that final game.

Play to win it at all — or don't play at all.

I'm with @BonScot on this one: completely pointless game, in my opinion. Not saying that it shouldn't mean anything to other fans — but third place wouldn't mean a thing to me, personally.

Imagine how you’d feel if a player got seriously injured playing in that nonsense.
That depends on how you feel about the game itself. I'd say "totally worth it!" whereas the bronze nay sayers would say the opposite.
So it's not really an argument for or against.

It's the same for the delayed off-side calls. I love this new rule for several reasons (don't want to create a wall of text here). But critics have said "what if someone gets injured after the offside? They wouldn't have gotten injured with the old rules". My response is the same: Totally worth the risk, because the new rule makes the game better (IMO, of course). But those who don't like the new rule will say the opposite.

I remember France being the favorites to win the qualifying group. Think they had Papin (spelling?).

I might be confusing this with another match, but wasn't France playing to a 1-1 draw against Bulgaria in the last game which would have qualified them for the world cup? But then France got a freekick on the right side of the box with like a minute left of injury time. Instead of just passing it in play to keep possession, they went for the win (which would have meant absolutely nothing) and played the free kick into the box, got countered, 1-2, game over for France!

I learned a valuable lesson from watching that: Never forget your main objective! France's main objective that match was to qualify, but they threw it away in an effort to get a meaningless goal and another 2 meaningless points.

Sweden almost did the same in their last 16 game against Switzerland 2018.

They just played the Argentinian commentary on the BBC. Absolutely tremendous stuff.

France look defeated. Can’t believe how passive they’ve been. Not offering anything going forward. They look like they’ve given up.

I had a free $5 bet to use on the World Cup, figured I'd use it on a cheeky bet at halftime. If France can win in extra time that would be pretty sweet lol

Sorry French PCF friends I but really really want to see Argentina and Messi win this. I’m in shock here. Didn’t Argentina learn their damn lesson vs the Netherlands??
