Online Home Poker (4 Viewers)

For those of you running PM on AWS are you able to do so on the free version that has the 1GB of memory limit? Seems like you would need more?

Nope - all is good on the free t2.micro. I'm able to run PM Lite with 1 10-person tournament and 1 10-person ring game with no issues. Yes, the RDP into the machine can be a little slow, but once PM is running, it's smooth.

Ran my patch upgrade, big plus having the cash table pause feature working.

For the AWS gurus - when I signed up for the free account, the confirmation email I got noted it was for 12 months:

The particular service we're using for this (t2.micro) seems to be in the "always free" category - is that really the case or will a fee kick in after 12 months? Does the account remain free, it's just you lose access to some of the "12 month for free" services?

I'm not necessarily a guru - just a software engineer trying to play poker in the COVID-19 world. I believe that there is always a free tier, even after 12 months. And that some services are free now that won't be in 12 months.

If I cant play live poker 12 months from now I dont think I'll need that AWS instance - I'll be too far gone.

Right - as far as I'm concerned this is to get me through the next couple of months. By summer, this shit better be over. My chanman table will be here and I'll have like 10 new chip sets b/c of this money-sucking sinkhole of heaven.

I'm thinking about upgrading to the Pro version for MTTs, and if I do that I may look to offer this online game permanently to supplement our live games. I also want to put a reminder in my calendar to cancel the AWS account so I don't get hit for a fee in 12 months (if that's the case) ;)

OK, so I'm wrong. From Amazon:

Services with a 12-month Free Tier allow customers to use the product for free up to specified limits for one year from the date the account was created. Services with an Always Free offer allow you to use the product for free up to specified limits as long as you have a valid AWS account.

https://aws.amazon.com/free : we can clearly see that EC2 (which is what we're all using) is on a 12-month free tier. So, yes, I guess they will charge us after 1 year.

I have it setup to email/text me if I do anything that would incur money. MTTs for me breakdown b/c of the limitations of not being able to use Zoom easily across multiple tables. I honestly hate online poker; the only reason that PM works for me is that all of my crew is on a single zoom, so I can freely heckle them live.

If anyone is interested in a play money mobile app, Poker Club seems to be a good choice. Can create private clubs to invite people into, and not have a rake set for cash games. Plus no weird gestures like Pokerrrr 2 has. My few friends and I stopped doing Pokerrrr 2 after so many consistantly boards that were just not realistically possible, and I used to play other free money app just for kicks.

I still prefer Poker Mavens overall for home cash games, but I don't have enough people interested in playing online poker in general, or else I would invest the $40 for it. Unless the stay at home order goes on for longer (Please no).

Looks like the t2.micro pricing is $0.0116 / hour or just over $101 per year. Not bad ...

Yeah, if you shut it down in between games and have an elastic IP associated with it, then it's going to be even less. Elastic IPs are free too, so you're only paying for the EC2 instance.

I’m surprised everyone is using zoom for this. My group has decided audio through discord is plenty enough. I’m not sure I want to watch my groups play on their phones, etc and I know I would forget that I was on video after awhile surely show some tells.

@CraigT78 , does your game require zoom?

This is the only way that I get to see all my local dad friends, so that's a big reason for me to use zoom. However, there's the added benefit I can watch everyone's motions, I can stare them down, etc.

Mavens question.

I've got the trial up and running on an EC2 server. Set up a limit ring game and started the server. When I click client, all I see is a brown screen with 10 or so small grey/dark grey pills in the middle of the screen. I thought I set up the windows defender inbound ports properly. What should I be seeing when the server is running and I click client from the local machine?

You should see the login page. It's a small window inside your browser with a login button and place to put your username/password

Ah - using the browser on the instance gives a "Error: this browser does not support WebSockets". Got it working from my local machine! Thanks. Now to figure out how the rest of this works...

Is Poker Mavens fairly easy to setup?

Getting it up and running takes less than an hour between AWS setup, downloading, installing, and firewalling. However, there are a lot of customization options, so you could spend anywhere from 5 minutes to 30 minutes customizing it.

Does anyone know if there's a way to do a "revolving late registration"with the Lite version of Poker Mavens? My scenario:
  • I have a 1 table tournament, table size is max at 10
  • I have late registration for 90 minutes
  • 9 people show up and we start. Someone else shows up late and registers (great!)
  • Someone busts out after 30 minutes
At this point, a seat is open, but late registration was automatically closed when the table originally filled up. Other players who could arrive late can't play even though it's only been 30 minutes and there's a seat open.

If you’re just using your home computer and Lite, it can take as little as 10 minutes, depending on your understanding of Firewalls and Routers. Setting the individual game can be done in a minute or two, once you’ve grasped the manual content ( which can take an hour or so)

Anyone wants to export me their text file on your nlhe and mix tourney? I don't think I'm doing it right. Want something that's working for you to compare to my settings. Thanks a bunch. Craig helped me out on the ring games already. I think im good there

Your tournament settings might end up being vastly different than my settings, which might be drastically different than the next person's settings, depending on what you are trying to accomplish (rebuys, add-ons, steepness of blind levels, desired tournament length, etc.). So I'm not sure that sending you a list of settings will give you what you are looking for.

If you want, PM me with a summary of what type of tournament you want to run and I can give you some suggested settings. In your PM please include the following info:
  • freeze-out or re-buy?
  • tournament entry cost? (and is all money going to players, or are you raking some?)
  • if re-buy tourney, then number of rebuys allowed? and cost of each re-buy (same or different than entry cost)?
  • do you need to bust to rebuy? and if no, at what number of chips can you still rebuy?
  • length of rebuy period? (in hours/minutes or blind levels)
  • how many players are you expecting, and how long do you want it to run?
  • do you want a "turbo" style with quick blind increases and short blind levels, or a more slow paced and gradual style? (My online tournaments run about 4 hours, with 15 minute blinds, and play much like a live event. Other players have 2 hour or even 1 hour tournaments, with 5 minute blinds and steep level increases. Where are you on this spectrum?)
  • How often do you want to have breaks, and for how long?
  • How do you want to start the game? Manually when everybody is logged in and ready, or at a set time (regardless if players are there), or when a set number of players are logged in and registered?
  • Does the tournament run repeatedly whenever there are players logged in and wanting to play (sit and go) or is this more of an occasional (one or more times a week) home game that you schedule for a given time or day of the week?
  • What do you want to do if a player has paid up but is a no-show? Turf him after a few minutes, turf him after an hour in case he might show up, or blind him off until he is gone? (Turfing him removes his entry fee from the prize pool, letting him stay allows a non-player to make it to the money)
  • How much time do you want to allow a player to act? (some people prefer a fast "Turbo style" of around 15 seconds, others prefer a "live game" feel and allow up to a minute.)
As you can see, there is a lot to consider about how you want to set up your game, and each decision will have an impact on the flavor of the game. I haven't even mentioned starting stack, which affects (and is affected by) decisions of game length, blind time, level steepness, etc.

Not meaning to overwhelm you here, and it is certainly possible to run a tournament with mostly default settings and you will still have fun. But giving a little thought as to how you want your tourney to run will give you a much more satisfying experience (IMO).

I installed Poker Maves Lite in 10 minutes. Group is trying to decide is worth the $ to keep weekly home game going.
So far looks like a good program.

Does anyone have any complaints about Poker Maves? Other than a few features it is missing. I'm looking for feedback on if program has crash issues or dealing is not really random.
And yes I already downloaded and checkout their Card Shuffling Simulator 1.02

Dealing is as random as you can get (probably more so than the bad shuffles typical at a home game. Some players have experienced freeze issues, usually corrected with a browser close/re-open. One player couldn't connect to login, and had to restart windows to log on, something to do with browser cache.

Can anyone help with getting around an Xfinity firewall and port forwarding for Poker Mavens? I’ve done everything to the best of my ability and it still is not working.
