PCF Cigars (6 Viewers)

LOL...yeah, the trick is to smoke it fast enough that it doesn't go out. I learned that when relighting, you blow out instead of suck in the smoke until you get a decent plume of smoke from the foot. Then suck in once and you're good to go. Works like a charm and the cigar doesn't end up tasting like a dirty ashtray! :ROFLMAO::ROFL: :ROFLMAO::ROFL: :ROFLMAO:

Forgot to mention the cigars I like.
Super premium: Padron 1926 or 1964, Davidoff, Diamond Crown, Liga Privada #9

Premium: Montecristo, anything by AJ Fernandez, Hoyo De Monterrey, San Cristobal, Fuente, Romeo y Julieta, Oscar Valledares (Island Jim is my favorite of his), H. Upmann, Oliva Serie V Melanio, Ave Maria (AJ Fernandez), San Lotano (AJ Fernandez), Debonaire Cigars (smokes like a super premium...my alternative to Davidoff)

Cheaper Alternatives: Reposado '96 from Cigars International, Original Cubans (Cigars International), Perdomo Mistakes, I absolutely love the "alternative to" cigars from JR Cigars. They're all pretty good for $2-3 per stick!
Yep! That’s the trick I was taught too. Some people also say you should hold a flame an inch away from the end when you blow out too to “burn off the bad built up gas” or something. I do it sometimes, can’t say that makes much sense to me… I only blow out a few times though and you gotta do it really slow and soft or you wonk things up

That’s quite the list! Looks like you go for the mostly Nicaraguan heritagey stuff. Do you smoke any of the smaller boutique American brands? Dapper, Room 101, RoMa?

I have smoked Room 101 and have heard a lot about Dapper. I sometimes go for the boutique brands but tend to stay on the name brand side. I would say that Debonaire and Oscar Valledares are boutique brands but they aren't American cigars. I never knew their were cigars made in America (or are they made elsewhere and marketed here?).

Loving Guardian of the Farm and Fat Bottom Bettys lately. Box lasts me a while and I don't have a thought about looking elsewhere while I have them.

While I have a seperate set of humidors for the Habanos, I've still got the NCs in tuperdors and do enjoy them. I realized last night I have an entire tuperdor full of Oliva sticks and a tuperdor for everything else. I can't imagine, given the comments in this thread, I'm alone in that regard.

This will probably stir the pot and hopefully encourage some fun debate. I was in Put-in-Bay, OH this past weekend and took a Davidoff Winston Churchill and a Cuban Montecristo No. 2. The Davidoff was way better in all aspects. Lighting, flavor, draw, and smoking. Did I enjoy the Cuban Montecristo? Yes. But it wasn’t as flavorful and it didn’t light very well. The first 1/3 of the cigar canoed (yes, I lit it properly LOL). Maybe I got a bad one. My opinion is that Cuban cigars have quality issues and it’s a crap shoot whether you’ll get a well constructed cigar, among other things. There are plenty of non Cubans that I’d put up against a Cuban…Oliva Serie V Melanio, Davidoff, Padron 1926 or 1964, and some of the higher end Fuente cigars. What are your thoughts?

QC is a problem with Cubans, no question

I think I struggle a bit with otherwise an outright direct comparison of the very large universe of CC vs NC. I think it’s a bit apples vs oranges, I smoke and enjoy both and think it’s a bit wrong to compare Nica sticks to Cubans. Different range of flavors, strengths, etc. I think Drew Estate LP vs a Cuban is like Rye vs a Scotch. Sure in the grand scheme of things they’re both cigars/whiskeys but boy are the designed to meet different flavor profiles and experiences.

I would say mild Davidoffs are probably the most fair comparison to most CC but Padrons 26 and 64s are different products.

Also, now tacking on a reply to @JustDave as well, I think Oliva are a good product in their place but I think new blend melanio maduros are super meh and super overpriced and those were always the shining star of Oliva for me. The Serie V line saved the company but they’ve now turned to extracting as much cash from it as possible and they’re only okay. Many other NC I like a lot more.

Is my humidor still full of a bunch of them? Sure is, but that’s mostly cause they’re my go to for friends who don’t smoke a lot. Once they’ve had 3-5 sticks with me they get to graduate from Serie V to Hemingways lol

Have smoked a couple of these recently: great cigar for UK smokers given the price.

General question for the community: anybody else think – or know the reason why – cigars generally start tasting way better once the first ash drops off? Or is it just me that thinks this, haha?

Blend change, releasing vitolas that don't do the leaf justice, calling everything 'serie v', or something else?

I had it from someone who repped Oliva for a lot of the south East that about 2 years ago they changed the blend and maybe it’s that my tastes changed or it’s just placebo but I used to love em and the box of melanio maduro figurados I bought a year ago are the last Serie v I’ll be buying.

Agreed though that it doesn’t help they slam it out in vitola possible. I find the blend shines most as lancero and robusto

I agree about the QC on the cubans

i will also say this, most people will over rate the cuban cigars becasue they are cuban and we have been told they are the best

I do liek them but I will say there are better cigars out there nowadays

I think AF and Padron are the best Cigar makers these days
but I am one of those guys that likes to smoke different Cigars all of the time, anything from a Conneticut, to a Maduro and to a spicy Camerron

but if I want to impress someone that likes Cigars I always say get a Casa Fuente, a Padron 26 or 64, or Melanio V.....tough to beat any of those

Davidoffs are super overrated for my tastes. Way too mild. The inconsistency of Cubanos is well documented.

The Colorado cCaro, Winston Churchill (The Late Hour), and Millenium blends are not mild. But I agree, their overall product lineup is fairly mild. My favorite cigar is the Davidoff Winston Churchill (regular, not The Late Hour)...it's a medium bodied cigar. Some would say mild if they're used to smoking full-bodied, peppery cigars. What do you like?

Totally agree on overrating the Cubans. I look at it like when I used to drink beer before I was 21. It was illegal so there was the idea that I shouldn't be doing it haha. I think it's the same with Cuban cigars...forbidden fruit so to speak.

I’ve had the Millenium blends and had mixed feelings on them. Haven’t had the other two. Good construction, just not for my palette it seems.

I like a lot of the stuff you do: AF, Padron, La Aurora, My Father, etc. I also enjoy a few of the Perdomos, and I have a handful of Habanos that are reliable: HdM, Monte #2, and Por Laranaga Petit Robustos to name a few. Oh, QD’o, also.

La Aurora Maduro 1986 Toro. Gift from a colleague from the DR. Solid. Chocolate. A touch sharp but great smoke, solid draw. Enjoying it.
